Naomi Brown, CEO AFAC
To quote Charles Dickens – the past 12 months has seen “…the best of times and the worst of times…”. Images of the ‘inland tsunami’ flowing through the Lockyer Valley and Ipswich in Qld, the fast flowing flood waters of the swollen Brisbane River sweeping pontoons, boats and walkways before it and the devastation and damage sustained in WA through the worst fire season in the West for many years, are etched in all our minds. But so too are the images of the resourceful SES crews and fire-fighters in the leading roles they played in communities large and small during these disasters.

<< AFAC and the Bushfire CRC are working together to encourage and support the use of Professional Development Events as a mechanism to utilise research in agencies. Engagement and active involvement are seen as critical to the success of utilising research as this allows people to form their own understanding of what the research might mean to their own context. Pictured left are participants in a Fuel and Fire Clinic held in the Victorian Mallee region.

Collaborative Purchasing and ContractsAn important part of AFAC’s Vision is to facilitate efficiency across the industry. AFAC into the FutureEvery industry organisation must ensure some focus is always trained on the future needs of the sector it serves. This is particularly relevant in the fire and emergency services industry given the rapidly changing environment. The AFAC into the Future (AITF) is a major body of work sanctioned by the AFAC Board and Council who will continue to guide and approve the strategic direction this work will take. This work will build on the AFAC Strategic Plan 2010-2012.
