My opening sequence is a thriller
genre. It is like that of a common thriller asit sticks to the thriller conventions such as:
• Minimal Dialogue
• Formal and dark clothing
• Suspense
• No violence
• Intense music
• Suggestive messages
• Low key lighting
•

My group analysed the opening sequence of Phone booth ( , ), ( , ) Joel Schumacher 2002 Collateral Michael Mann 2004
and ( , ) The Dark Night Christopher Nolan 2009 and we noticed that many of the codes and conventions
mentioned in the previous slide were present in these.films

This is the establishing
shot of our opening.sequence We decided that
it would be best to use low key lighting as this is what we observed in our
analysis of thriller.openings
We then showed a train.approaching a platform
We were advised by colleagues to use this as trains look very
.powerful on screen There was also a lot
of train usage in the film .Collateral

How Real Media Products Influenced Our DecisionsContinued
,From our analysis of thriller openings we thought that
it would be an excellent idea to put suggestive.messages in our sequence The main film that we analysed
which used suggestive messages was .Collateral The images below shows how we used suggested meanings and
.implemented them in our own sequence
Images from Phone Booth
Images from our film showing suggested.meaning

Both wearing shades to show a sense of mystery
Both wearing very smart
,clothing which are dull in
colour
,Strong solid posture to portray
power andauthority
,Keeping a straight expressionless face which portrays sternness

Portrayal of SocialGroups
Both the antagonist
and protagonist are wearing smart clothes
which shows that they both come from a
middle or higher class.background
This shot shows the victim purchasing a broadsheet, newspaper which suggests
that he is educated therefore- .more likely to be upper class
From our film analysis we noticed that most antagonists
are from a lower social.background We also tried to
portray this in our sequence by shooting in different
locations which reflect the.character We also tries to
show the struggle of lower.classed people
Surrounded by goods which
represents.money

Distribution
We as a group are aware of the fact that our film is low
budget and would be distributed by a smaller company like Film Four or Vertigo Films than 20th Century Fox or Warner
.Brothers
Film Four Has been Very successful with distributing low, budget British films such as The Hide and .East is East
Even though Film Four have done incredibly well in,distributing their films none of them match my target.audience which could be a major problem

DistributionContinued
.Another distributor I researched in was Verve Films
This company has also had success with low budget,British films like Film Four but Verve Films has
distributed films which are aimed at my specific.target audience A film they distributed was Bullet
boy .which was a success They also distributed the film Straight Heads , .which targets my audience

Audience
This shows that from the audience research my group
,carried out people enjoy, watching thrillers therefore
we thought it would be best.to target this large audience
This was quite biased as
the male to female ratio.was not equal However we
still used our research to.plan our film
,From this we established
that our target audience was- .between the ages of 15 25 We
decided that it would not be a good idea to make an action or western as we simply did not have a high enough
.budget

Attracting TheAudience
We decided that the best way of approaching our target
.audience was online We uploaded our sequence on to the, .social networking site Face book We also uploaded it
.onto YouTube which attracted a large audience The main.advantage of this was that word of mouth occurred Our
friends also began to upload it on their profiles so that.their friends could also view our sequence Images are
.shown below

Technology
’As we were using the new Mac s we had to use.them more to get better at editing We as a
group only had experience with the older Macs.which had a completely different layout We
were very happy that we now know how to edit.on a more advanced piece of technology
The older version we already had experience with
The new version we now.know how to use

The preliminary task taught us a lot
.about the basic rules of filming These consisted of the 180 degree, .rule continuity and match on action This task also improved our editing.skills
