Statment

This project is to challenge the traditional practice of urbangrowthbyreworkingtheconceptofexpandinglandintowater.Theaimcouldbeachievedbyinvestigatingasustainablemodeloftopologicaltransformationanddevelopmentofreclamation.

Inspired by modern reinterpretation of archipelago, thetechnologicalexperimentwillbeonconcernssuchasretentiontechniques, and man-made island construction, along withcreatinglandmass, thestudywillalsofocusingonrejuvenatingexistingreclaimedarea.

Housing will be the architectural program to be studied; thesite is aiming to carry ahighpopulation loadas projectedbygovernment’sfutureplanningandthedesignwillbeaflexiblesolutionbyprovidingvarietyintermsoflivingconditions.

PRECEDENTS

This hypothetical urban scheme being proposed by Tangewas trying to solve theovercrowdingurban conditionand thelimitationinexpandingitsinfrastructureunderanenormousunpopulationoftheTokyocityduring1950-60s.

ArtificialArchipelago

The fanatical projection of using archipelago as a model oflandgrowthby reclamation isoneof themajoraspect in thisstudy.Theaim is tocreatea typologyofartificialarchipelagowhich isable tocater themassive infrastructureand logisticalrequirementformodernmetropolislivingcondition.

PROJECTDEFINITION:

TYPOLOGICALMORPHOLOGY

Theprojectisacombinationoftwooperationsinlandmass;oneisto“CUT”awaysomeexistinglandmassbyconnectingexistingriverine systemwhichwas being blocked or hided away fromitsconnectionwiththeocean.Thisoperationtriestorevitalizethenaturalwaterbodies’dynamicsandduringtheprocess, theeffect of breaking down existing large, solid land mass intopiecesisdesiredtointroducingwateredgesintotheinlandandcreatingdifferentformoflandmass.

Secondly, theoperation“FILL” isasystemofcreatingartificialislandasamodeloflandgrowth.Thedesignandconstructionof island is guided by a principle of hard and soft edges. The hard edge part of an island will be protected by a stiffand linear seawall, which provides maximum structural andhydraulicprotection;onthesoftedgepart, theislandwillhaveno structural protection on its edge and subject to sedimentdeposition, duringtheprocesstheperimeterandshapeoftheislandisprojectedtochange.

Thedirectionandallocationofthenetworkofislandsisaffectedby the water current. The study is proposing a trajectory ofchangeforindividualislandoritsmultipleconfigurationsuchastheygatheredasaclustertogrow.

Theproposed typologiesof islands are varied in size and thepre-determinedchoiceofhardoredgewhichcontrolitsfutureexpansion.Itprovidesflexibilityinturnsofarchitecturalplanningofeithertakingtheadvantageofsolidandcontrolledstructureofthehardedgepartorusingthesoftedgepartwhichprovidesmorepossibility in termsofwater interfaces tocreatekindofmatbuildingtypology.

INFRASTRUCTURALMULTI-LAYERING

Providinganyplanningontheseawouldfaceoneissueishowtoconnecttheminanefficientwaytosuitthemodern, urbanstyleofliving.Considerthehugeamountofpeopletoaccommodatein such area, a pure transportation network by ferry is notfeasible.

Therefore in the proposal, in the site of the link bridge asproposedbythegovernment, the ideaof thevehicular link istoaccepted,andservingthesameintendedfunctionoflinkingthenewtunnelfromLamTin,whichconnectsthesitewiththemajorityofKowloonside;andalsolinkinguptheexistingTKOtowncenterandalsotherelativelyun-developedTKOEast.

Furthermore,a transportationhub iscreated in themiddleofthesite,linkedwiththevehicularbridge.Itwillbeservedasamulti-functionbase for residentsandvisitors topark, to takeferryandactasapublicsquareonitssurface.

Theferrywillbedesignatedtotravelalongdifferentroutesthatrunning across different parts of the archipelago. A potentialMTRlinkispossibleandthehubcouldbetheoutletforsuchline.

HOUSING

Accordingtogovernment’splanning,thewholeTseungKwanOareawillhouse450000ofpeople,inanexpansionof90000more thancurrent condition. Inanaveragehousehold sizeofabout three persons per family, it means in the area, about30000moreunitsofhousingisrequiredtoaccommodatesuchgrowthinpopulation.

Solving such needs a high density planning of housing isunavoidable, thereforebyextendingthelandmassintotheoceanis oneway to promote a better living standard in such livingcondition.Thereforebytakingtheadvantageofthenetworkofarchipelago,theallocationofsuchhigh-risecanbeplannedwithhierarchyandalsocombinedwithlowerbuildingtypologywhichcanbebuiltoverthe“soft”partoftheisland.

Thisentirehightowerwillbeplannedasverticalcommunityinwhichcommunalspacesareallocatedinthemidstofthetower, and the traditional concept of podium space will be housedwithinthefirstfewfloorsofthetowerstructure.
