So here’s the thing, and you can ask anyone about it: People were praying for something twisted to happen last summer. They didn’t care what it was, either. A hurricane, an earthquake, a hostage situation—seriously, anything. We wanted a problem, and a hairy one, just for something to do.
You would’ve too, if you lived where we did. Folsom Adjacent, it’s called. Adjacent—uh-JAY-sent, is how you say it—means nearby or next to, so it doesn’t even have its own name. Doesn’t deserve it, really, because it’s not much of a town, or a place. Or even a neighborhood.
Adjacent is a trailer park named after a nuclear plant, is what it is. Think of hundreds of beat-up mobile homes scattered around a gas station, a musty grocery store, a bar, and a desperate little elementary school, which was just two old trailers pushed together with a sign that said adjacent elementry. Someone forgot the “a” and it never got fixed.
Adjacent is on a small island, a coastal island, close to shore. On a clear day you can see miniature people having normal lives over in the city across the way, Crotona. Crotona is too full of very important people for its own good but at least it’s a real place, with actual stuff to do and see.
Adjacent’s got nothing, no mall or multiplex or skate park. Even Folsom Energy, the giant plant where half the parents work, doesn’t seem real. It was built entirely underground. All you see is a flat, dusty nothing surrounded by barbed wire and signs that say authorized personnel only all over the place. As if people wanted to sneak into that place. As if we weren’t already trapped behind barbed wire, a million miles from anything, in a place where nothing ever happened.
Until one week in July, that is. That’s when suddenly it looked like the praying might have worked: People in Adjacent began to disappear.
An excerpt fromPerfect for fans of smart mysteries like Chasing Vermeer!

The small island floated on the waves; no more than a grassy hillock with a single tall tree. The tree appeared to be in blossom, with a profusion of white flowers, but as Honor drew near she saw the truth. The branches bore neither fruit nor flower, but a great flock of birds. Heads tucked under their wings, fast asleep, they were hushed and pure-white like a fall of new snow.
The soul-birds of Faerie.Honor knew that what she was contemplat-
ing was an unimaginable risk. To waken the soul-birds was to waken Old Magic, an ancient and mysterious force that existed before the worlds came into being; before the great divide of good and evil. There was no telling what might happen if she woke that power. It was unpredictable. It could not be controlled. The only thing she knew for certain was that it guar-anteed change.
And things had to change. So much was wrong and bound to get worse. All the prophe-cies and predictions were clear: Faerie’s doom was upon them. It was Dana’s destiny to coun-ter this doom, but she was too weak for the mis-sion. Honor could see that even if her beloved husband, the High King, could not.
Despite her determination, Honor felt the tremor in her soul. Did she dare such a thing? To tamper with Old Magic?
“Desperate times call for desperate mea-sures,” she muttered to herself.
Before she could change her mind, she raised her arms and cried out in full voice.
“Sleepers awake!”

“Thanks, Penny,” she said.“It’s Peggy,” I said.“Oh,” she said. “Whatever.” Sylvia Fowler
pushed past and strode toward the counter, black stilettos clacking with each step.
I stood in the doorway, stuck, tangled in my scarf and duffel strap, watching her spidery walk.
“Latte, Andrea,” Sylvia said at the barista, whose name was Amber, which Sylvia knew. She pushed her black wraparound sunglasses up onto her patent-leather hair, pulled back into a crazy-tight chignon.
Chignon. Now there was a word I never knew before I got to Aspen.
You have to hand it to Sylvia. She was committed to being Sylvia. And that meant wearing black. In the sea of blond shearling and grey chinchilla and white quilted nylon that is the Timberlake, that is any coffee shop in Aspen for that matter, Sylvia was always the only one in black, hair included. Knee-high boots, thick black tights, thigh-length wrap coat, bulky cashmere scarf, driving gloves, mascara—all black, deep black, sleek against her icy white skin. The only thing not black or white was her lips, thickly coated in the richest, shiniest ruby-red lipstick.
Amber started packing espresso for Sylvia’s latte. I watched Sylvia narrow her eyes and lock them into the back of Amber’s head. Sylvia knew that Amber always had fresh gossip. She made lattes for everyone. Everyone. And she served up gossip that was even hotter than the coffee.
“So,” said Sylvia, licking her red lips. “Was winter break boring, or what?” She dug through
the suitcase-size, buckle-heavy leather handbag (black, duh) hanging from her forearm.
Amber wrenched the espresso lever into the press, refastened her curly black ponytail, and shook her head. “Are you kidding? You probably heard about that whole thing with Stephen Haines-Durant. His father owns the Durant Hotel up the street. Anyway, he’s supposed to be going out with Mary Moorhead, right? Perfect couple, right? Richest guy in Aspen and richest girl at Maroon Bells Academy? Anyway, he’s been hooking up with some girl who works at Mod Jeans.”
I froze. Did I really hear what I just heard? Stephen Haines? Mary’s boyfriend? They really were the perfect couple. And ever since I’d known them they had been attached at the hip.
Half of me knew for sure: Stephen would never cheat on Mary. This couldn’t be true.
But the other half of me knew I had to keep listening. What if?
Sylvia took a gulp of her still-searing-hot latte, a big one, the kind of gulp that would burn a normal mouth, but not Sylvia’s, then dramatically dropped the mostly unfinished cup into the trashcan next to the counter. She slid her sunglasses back over her eyes and dropped a crumpled twenty-dollar bill on the counter.
Amber started punching buttons on the cash register. “And what is that lipstick you have on? It’s so red.”
“Jungle red,” said Sylvia. “It’s from Dubai. You can’t get it here.”
