A
• Algebra Tiles- Singles or 1’s are small squares - X2 or Squared X’s are big squares- X’s are rectangles- Colored tiles are positive and non colored tiles are negative - It is easier to solve the equation, when the tiles are in order- The order is X2, X, Singles
B
• Binomial- Family of polynomial- Binomials have two terms
C
• Checks- Rewrite equation- Replace the variable in the equation with the answer from the equation- Solve the equation - If answers are the same your answer is correct, if they are not the same your answer is wrong
D
• Degrees - A straight line is 180 Degrees - A triangle adds up to 180 Degrees- A circle is 360 Degrees
E
• Exponents- First number is the base, second number that is raised is the exponent - The exponent tells the base how many times that the base multiplies
it self by its self.- Dividing: if the bases are the same subtract the exponents- Multiplying: if the bases are the same add the exponents- Exponents are a more advanced multiplication
F
• Fractions- Improper fractions are fractions where the numerator is bigger than
the denominator, where its usually the other way around- Mixed number fractions are fractions with a whole number then the
fraction, it is a solution to not have improper fractions, the whole number shows how many whole fractions were made
G
• Graphs- Table of Values or T-Charts show data in a list form, they all have
equations showing there succession or reduction- Circle: In the shape of a circle, cut into pie shapes and showing there
values- Bar: Shows data using bars either vertical or horizontal- Line: Shows data with points on a graph then connected to form a line,
shape or picture- Picture: Shows data using pictures, the pictures then represent a value
H
• Hypotenuse- The hypotenuse is only on right triangles- It is the longest point on right triangle- Pythagorean theorem the hypotenuse is usually c2 of a2 + b2 = c2
I
• Inequality- Inequalities show that two values are not equal like this- There are some more advanced ways to, such as greater than > and
less than <- Also Greater than or equal toAnd Less than or equal to
J
• Just Do It- Just do it - If its a fraction multiply straight across- Cross multiplication
K
• Kilometers- Unit of measure - Most commonly known as KM- It is used as a measurement for distance but mainly for speed - 1KM = 1000M- 1KM = 100,000CM- 1KM = 1,000,000MM
L
• Line Symmetry- An object flipped over the line of symmetry and unchanged in its
shape has line symmetry - Line symmetry is also called Reflection Symmetry- One half is the reflection of the other half
M
• Monomials- Family of Polynomials- Monomials have one term
N
• Number Line- Negative numbers on the left- Positive numbers on the right- Zero is in the middle- The numbers on both sides continue for ever - (-8) is smaller than (-5) - 1 is greater than (-1)
O
• Order of Operations- BEDMAS Brackets, Exponents, Division and Multiplication, Addition
and Subtraction- Division, Multiplication do whatever one comes first, order does not
matter- Addition, Subtraction do whatever one comes first, order does not
matter - BFSD Brackets, Fractions, Sort and Divide - To remember BFSD remember Best Friends Share Dessert
P
• Polynomials• Polynomials can have constants, variables and exponents,
but can never divide by a variable- Poly means many and nomial in this case means terms, so polynomial means
many terms- The Polynomial family Binomial, Trinomial, Monomial- Monomials have one term- Binomials have two terms- Trinomials have three terms - Quadrinomial have four terms and Quintinomial have five terms but they usually
aren’t used
Q
• Quadrant- A quadrant is a section a graph- There are usually four quadrants on each graph- Quadrant 1: X is (-) and Y is (+)- Quadrant 2: X is (+) and Y is (+)- Quadrant 3: X is (-) and Y is (-)- Quadrant 4: X is (+) and Y is (-)
R
• Rational Numbers- Rational numbers are real numbers and can be written as a simple
fraction- Some examples: 5 = 5/1 1.75 = 7/4- Irrational numbers are real numbers that can not be written as
fractions- Some examples: Pi Square root of 3 & 99
S
• Surface Area- Rectangular Prism: SA= 2(lw + hw + hl) - Cylinder: SA= 2Pi r2 + 2 Pi rh- The total area of the surface of a three-dimensional object
T
• Trinomial- Family of polynomial- Trinomials have three terms
U
• Unlike Terms vs Like Terms- Like terms are terms where the variable and exponent are the same- Unlike terms are terms where the variable and the exponent are not the same
V
• Variables- Variables in equations are usually letters and those letters represent a
value - A symbol for an unknown number- The most common variables are X, Y, N…
W
• Word Problems- Example of a word problem: “Sam and Alex play Tennis. On the weekend Sam played four more games than Alex did, and together they played twelve games. How many games did Alex play?”- To solve them you break down the word problem and turn the English in
algebra, then solve the problem- Some key words to look for are: “add, total, sum, increase, more, combined,
together” those all mean addition- “minus, less, difference, fewer, decreased” those mean subtraction- “multiplied, times, of, product, factor” mean multiplication - “divided, quotient, per, out of, ratio” all mean division
X
• X- Axis- Horizontal Axis on a graph- It is used as a reference line so you can measure from it- X in the image is Blue
Y
• Y – Axis- Vertical axis on a graph- It is used as a reference line so you can measure from it- Y in the image is Yellow
Z
• Zero pairs- Numbers that equal zero- Mainly used to move numbers in an equation- 2 (-2) = 0
