One unusual a s p e c t of Newfoundland's i s s u e was t h a t Newfoundland may have been t h e o n l y p o s t a l a d m i n i s t r a t i o n t o i s s u e a r e p l y l e t t e r c a r d w i t h o u t hav ing had any e x p e r i e n c e a t a l l i n i s s u i n g o r d i n a r y s i n g l e l e t t e r ca rds . The second unusua l a s p e c t o f t h e Newfoundland i s s u e i s t h a t i t was a l m o s t a n e x a c t c o p y - i n t e r m s o f g r a p h i c l a y o u t , a n d i n t e r m s of m e c h a n i c a l l a y o u t - of Queensland9s 1911 i s s u e , which was a p p a r e n t l y p r i n t e d by t h e Queensland Government P r i n t i n g Off ice . I n a f u t u r e i s s u e of PSN we i n t e n d t o i l l u s t r a t e t h e Q u e e n s l a n d a n d Newfoundland r e p l y l e t t e r c a r d s f o r purposes of comparison.

An a r r r a n g e m e n t o f t h e p r i n t e d h e a d i n g s c a n be e n v i s i o n e d ( a s shown b e l o w ) t h a t w o u l d p e r m i t b o t h n o r m a l r e p l y c a r d s a n d c a r d s o f t h e I1 B o n a v e n t u r e " t y p e t o b e c u t f r o m t h e same s h e e t . Note t h a t Webb's 4 t h e d i t i o n shows a GTR-J17, which i s a v e r y u n l i k e l y c a r d - whereas G17 w i l l i n e v i t a b l y be found; 517 i s p r o b a b l y a n e r r o r f o r G17, m i s t a k i n g r e d f o r g r e e n i n a b l a c k and w h i t e photocopy, b u t we no l o n g e r have t h e photocopy n o r t h e name o f whoever s u b m i t t e d i t .

A few months ago Tom F lynn asked i f anyone knew t h e s o u r c e o f t h e p i c t u r e s used f o r t h e O f f i c i a l P i c t o r i a l c a r d s i s s u e d by t h e Canadian P o s t O f f i c e Depar tment i n t h e 1930's. Thanks t o E a r l e Cover t more i n f o r m a t i o n on t h i s t o p i c i s now a v a i l a b l e .

A n u m b e r o f y e a r s a g o a p i l e o f m o u n t e d p h o t o g r i p h s , many o f t h e m w a t e r d a m a g e d , w e r e f o u n d i n a n O t t a w a b a s e m e n t . T h e s e a p p e a r t o b e mounted c o p i e s o f t h e pho tographs used t o p r e p a r e t h e O f f i c i a l P i c t o r i a l c a r d s .
