# IUCN Redlist Global Status as at http://www.iucnredlist.org; CR, Critically Endangered;
DD, Data Deficient; EN, Endangered; EX, Extinct; LC, Least Concern; NT, Near Threatened;
NE, Not Evaluated; VU, Vulnerable.
* The Nomenclature followed here is after Frost 2013. The shift in generic allocation of
some of the species is based on molecular studies and is only of implication under the Indian
context.
IUCN Redlist Global Status:
According to the IUCN Red list of threatened species, the global status of
Indian amphibians is 23.68% Data deficient; 21.93% Not Evaluated 30.12%
Least concern; 2.63% Near Threatened; 7.02% Vulnerable; 9.36% Endangered; ;
4.97% Critically endangered and 0.29% Extinct. Out of the 342 species of
known Amphibians from India, 75 species are yet to be evaluated and 81
species are still under the data deficient category.
Specifically, for amphibian species of Western Ghats in IUCN Redlist most of
the species are either overestimated or underestimated in terms of assigning
the Redlist Status. To cite a few examples here, species like Pedostibes
tuberculosus is considered as ‘Endangered’ in spite of its known distribution for
more than 1000 kms with localized abundant populations and Raorchestes
travancoricus is considered as ‘Extinct’ in spite of its occurrence in Anamalai
hill ranges. Hence, most of the amphibian species needs to be re-evaluated
with an elaborative, systematic and co-ordinated field work based studies to
know their proper Redlist position.
