The Elim Pentecostal
Church, Huddersfield, was
formed in 1 931 with a
message of salvation and
a demonstration of the
Holy Spirit’ s presence in
Pentecostal power.
We are an international
congregation of all ages,
spreading the good news
of Christ in our services,
through small groups, and
out on the streets. Our
Sunday morning services
offer you the chance to let
the Word of God impact
your l ife and meet others in
a friendly atmosphere of
both fellowship and
worship with a full range of
children’s activities from a
crèche to a teenagers’
group. We are a servant-
hearted church, providing
practical care in the
community and touching
those on the fringes of
society, including refugees
and those with drug and
alcohol problems. Our
desire is to see people
grow in their faith in Christ
in our wide variety of
weekly meetings for all
ages, areas and ethnic
backgrounds.
There is something for
YOU!

2 October 2015 encounter
What is church? Is it a place to be entertained,
like a concert or a show – with worship leaders
and preachers as the entertainment? But what
happens if the preacher has an off day? Or the
style of music doesn’t suit someone’s
preference? At home, you’d just switch to a
different channel. Is that all ‘Church is’?
Or is church l ike a shop – somewhere to find a
particular service or product? Should we
compare the market to get the best deal? What
happens i f someone can’t find everything they
want in one place? Do they go to one church for
the singing, another for the kids' work, and
another for the preaching? They’l l have
everything to their taste, but i s that al l ‘Church
is’?
Or again, i s church l ike a spiri tual hospi tal –
somewhere for the sick to go to get better?
People are helped in overcoming spiri tual
ai lments and addictions. There are professionals
to help and people who care. But what happens
when the sick get better? In hospi tals no-one
stays a minute longer than they have to! Is that
al l that 'Church is' ?
Obviously every analogy fal ls short.
• Church is more than a show – we al l get to
join in.
• Church is more than a shop – i t’s a fami ly
business that we run together sharing
responsibi l i ty.
• Church is more than a hospi tal – we are al l
patients and helpers and everyone gets to stay.
In the Bible, God gives us some more helpful
pictures of what church is:
1 . Church is a family of bel ievers (Ephesians
2:1 9), which makes Sundays l ike a fami ly
gathering, where everyone brings what they
can, where people are noticed and known,
and burdens are l ightened by being shared.
2. Church is a temple (Ephesians 2:21 ), where
the God of heaven can be found on earth,
where people are given hope and heal ing,
transformed by the presence, power and
promises of God.
3. The church is the body of Christ, where we
get to be Jesus’ hands and feet. Each of us
playing our part, going where Jesus would
go and doing what Jesus would do (1
Corinthians 12).
4. The Church is a holy nation (1 Peter 2:9-
1 0), a people who know that heaven is their
home and Jesus is their Lord. A people who
belong to God that they might declare his
greatness to the nations, invi ting the world
to enter into the Kingdom of God.
That sounds good doesn’t i t? Join us over the
next few months as we journey through the
book of Romans, exploring what ‘Church is' ,
al igning our expectations and releasing our
potential as God’s people. Church is more. Be
part of i t.

Sadly the words 'Church' and 'Fun' are
often not put in the same sentence yet
having fun as a church fami ly is so
important. With the new 'ONE CHURCH
Sundays' the aim is to gather as many
people together to have fun and grow in
our relationships. There wi l l be di fferent
events happening each month so invi te
your friends and fami ly along and share in
having fun together. Proverbs tel l s us 'A
glad heart makes a cheerful face' (Proverbs
15:13) so let' s pray ONE CHURCH
Sundays wi l l increase our gladness and we
see lots of cheerful faces.

What I 've been doing:
This past year since last
September I have been working
on a project cal led the Kairos project. I 've been
working in schools offering help where needed with various
di fferent lessons and jobs. I t' s been an amazing year and
God has taught me a lot about personal discipl ine, our
dependency on the Holy Spiri t, and how exci ting l i fe can be
when we take risks for Him. Over summer I 've been
preparing for the next part of my journey which is heading
to Regents Theological Col lege.
What I 'm going to be doing:
I 've appl ied for a 3-year course in Church Leadership
looking at various subjects from the business side of running
a church to working with people. This may include things
l ike taking weddings, funerals, baptisms etc. I 'm very much
looking forward to this new part of my l i fe. I t wi l l be the fi rst
time I have l ived away from home or moved away from our
Church that I dearly love and therefore i t wi l l be qui te a
shock to the system! I know God wi l l be teaching me so
much more whi lst I am there and not just the theology side
of things. I 'm very grateful to God that the fi rst year of
finance has been covered, i t' s a massive blessing and wel l
taught lesson to know God's provision.
Please pray:
• I find friends whom I can pray with and be accountable to;
• I make time in the business of work etc. to spend time with
God;
• That I 'm open to what God is doing and can hear His
direction and guidance;
• That finances for the 2nd and 3rd years wi l l be provided.
I f you would l ike to continue your support for me, please
fi rst and foremost be praying, and secondly I sti l l have plenty
of CDs that are avai lable to buy at Church. They are £5 each
and have 3 songs on that I 've wri tten.
The next part of my journey. . .Joel Singleton

We have lots of things going on in the church here at
El im which we would love to chat to you more about
and see you get stuck into this beauti ful , sl ightly crazy
but amazing church fami ly. On Sundays in September
and October whi le new people are arriving and settl ing
in, we always have a student lunch after the second
morning service or after the Uni ted Service on the last
Sunday of the month. This wi l l help you get to know
each other, get to know different fami l ies in the church
and provide you with some top-notch food that i sn’t a
takeaway or out of a tin!
Tuesday nights are when most of our student events
happen at El im. We work on a fortnightly cycle so on
Group Weeks we have a student Bible study at our
house and on United Weeks we have DNA at the Oasis
Centre.
At student Bible study we drink many hot beverages,
eat lots of biscui ts and focus on bui lding relationships to
a point where we are able to share and trust each other
with our good days, joys and celebrations but also with
our bad days, struggles and hard times. We read the
Bible together, discussing di fficul t questions and thinking
how the truth of God’s word should affect our l ives on a
dai ly basis, pray into each other’s needs, and chal lenge
and encourage each other as fami ly.

• ADMIT that you have sinned, kept
God out of your l i fe and gone your
own way.
• BELIEVE that Jesus, God’s only son,
took the punishment you deserve
when He died for you on the cross,
that He rose from the dead
conquering the power of sin and
death, and making a restored
relationship possible.
• COMMIT your l i fe to Him. This
involves being truly sorry for your sin
and turning around from l iving your
l i fe for yourself, towards l iving your
l i fe to please God.
The simple prayer below is one you can
pray if you want to accept Jesus into your
life:
Father God, I know that I have not put
you first in my life and my sins have
separated me from you. I am truly sorry,
and now I turn away from my past sinful
life toward you. Please forgive me. I
believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for
my sins, rose from the dead, is alive, and
hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to be the
Lord of my life. Help me live for you each
day.
Amen
I f you have prayed this prayer, tel l a
Christian friend, join a church and ask
them to help you to understand more
about what i t means to be a Christian. I f
you would l ike to talk to one of the leaders

How to become aChristianI f you would l ike to know Jesus Christ

simple as ABC:
DNA stands for Do Nothing Apart. We set this
up last year and i t has been amazing to see how
it has taken off! This i s just about having fun,
being social , getting to know other people in the
church who are a simi lar sort of age but not al l
students, breaking down barriers and investing
meaningful ly in one another’s l ives. Highl ights
from the last year have included: pancake racing;
house designing; Chinese whisper charades;
quizzes; and a whole host more! I f you want to
get to know people better, especial ly in such a
big church, this i s the place to come!
So… come find us, come chat to us, we love
getting to know new people and having a giggle.
We also love investing in students’ l ives and
helping you guys to grow so we’re always up for

support you as best we can during your time at
