Tim DamanPresident and CEO
Lansing Regional
Chamber of Commerce
When LRCC started the
CORG awards in 2006, somesuggested that we would
soon run out of companies to
recognize. Eight years later, afterhaving honored 46 organizations
who have invested more than
$1.5 billion in our region, it isclear that there is no shortage ofgreat leadership, and no end insight for the great things yet to
be achieved.
I recently had the privilege of attending the annual recognition breakfast of
the Capital Region Community Foundation. The guest speaker, Diana Sieger
of the Grand Rapids Community Foundation, spoke about the importance of
community leadership. As I listened to the presentation, I found myself reflectingon how great leadership has impacted our community and in many ways is leading
a transformation of the Greater Lansing region.
One of the best testimonies of the impact of transformational leadership is to
consider the success of the five honorees at the Lansing Regional Chamber of
Commerces (LRCC) 2013 Celebration of Regional Growth Awards (CORG). In
many respects, the achievements of the organizations recognized at CORG serve
as a microcosm of how our region is capitalizing on our legacy of entrepreneurial
achievements.
The Eyde Companyhas been a leader in transforming the regions landscapefor several decades. The company has successfully navigated the challenges of
renovating the historic Knapps building while protecting its stature as the anchor
of the downtown Lansing business district.
Agro-Cult ure Liquid Fertilizers is a great example of how a second generation
of family leadership converted a small, growing business into a national leader in
its field. Agro-Cultures new headquarters features the largest fertilizer research
facility in the country.
Over the past 15 years, Emergent BioSolutionshas transformed the formerState of Michigan laboratories on Lansings north side into an impressive campus
that manufactures products that have made the company a global leader in the
specialty pharmecutical industry and a significant job provider in our region.
IDV Solutionsis another illustration of Greater Lansings growing role as a leader
in the growth of jobs and investment in high technology. IDVs success showcases
the entrepreneurial spirit of the next generation of research and technology.
Plas-Labs, Inc. represents the many under-the-radar success stories that exist
throughout our region. Since its inception in 1967, Plas-Labs has quietly built a
worldwide presence in its industry, and its prowess in international trade should bea model for others seeking growth in global markets.
There are many other examples of how vi sionary leadership is making
breakthroughs in ways that will transform our region. This months FOCUS looks
at a perfect example in the form of several initiatives to transform the Michigan
Avenue Corr idor from East Lansing to the State Capitol . Let s not forget the
six local units of government that have collaborated on a Shared Fire Services
Initiative that will serve as a model of regional cooperation, and as a potential new
model in the effective and efficient delivery of government services.
When LRCC started the CORG awards in 2006, some suggested that we would
soon run out of companies to recognize. Eight years later, after having honored
46 organizations who have invested more than $1,500,000,000 in our region, it is
clear that there is no shortage of great leadership, and no end in sight for the great
things yet to be achieved.

Michigan Avenue Corridor Plans Move Forward
After years of discussions among several different community organizations, plans for
developing the Michigan Avenue Corridor between Michigan State University and theState Capitol are starting to gain traction. Four separate initiatives are helping to create a
vision for what could become a defining decision about the Greater Lansing region.
We feel Michigan Avenue between MSU and the Capitol should be the lead corridor
in the state of Michigan, a bridge between government and education, said Tim
Daman, president & CEO of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC).
The corridor should become a statement about our region as a leader in biotech,
health science, IT and related businesses.
The first initiative started several years ago, when the cities of Lansing and
East Lansing, along with Lansing Township, created the Michigan Avenue
Corridor Authority, tasked with developing a shared vision for the corridor. The
second initiative surrounding Michigan Avenue came through the Capital Area
Transportation Authority (CATA), which has been authorized by the federal
government to move forward on a $215 million Bus Rapid Transit Project (BRT) for
an eight mile stretch of Michigan Avenue from the State Capitol to Marsh Road in
Meridian Township. The BRT would involve dedicated bus-only lanes in the center of
the Corridor with 28 stations along the way.
It would operate much more like a light rail system, only
with vehicles that have rubber tires, said Debbie Alexander,CATAs assistant executive director.
The next step for CATA is to hire a consultant to begin
an environmental study, which is expected to begin in
November.
A three-year, $3 million federal grant received by Tri-
County Regional Planning Commission (TCRPC) led
to a series of charrette forums at which TCRPC has been
soliciting public input as to what direction the corridor
development should take. People participating in the
charrettes have had an opportunity to provide suggestions
and feedback and help draft a vision that is being
developed. A final summary is due from consultants later
this year.
A fourth initiative was launched earlier this year by Michigan State University which
challenged an urban planning team to develop a vision for the Michigan AvenueCorridor. The vision is being developed in two stages, one from Hagadorn Road in
East Lansing to the Frandor area and the second from the East Lansing/Lansing
border to the State Capitol.
Projects like these have been very instrumental as catalysts for economic development
in communities in which they have been implemented, said Alexander. It is very
important for the business community to understand the potential impact of this
project and how we can maximize its potential.
The progress being made as a result of the Michigan Avenue Corridor Authority,
CATA, TCRPC and MSU initiatives represents a significant step forward for
the Michigan Avenue Corridor. The time may be right for the region to consider
channeling the separate efforts into a single coordinated program.
If we are really going to make this work, we need to consolidate these efforts and get
the region moving forward towards implementing a unified vision for the Michigan
Avenue Corridor, said Daman.
Renderings by MSU urban planners offer a glimpse of what neighborhoods along the new Michigan Avenue Corridor might look like.
Government Relations
We are one of only a very few communities in the United States and the only one in Michigan that has a major
corridor bookended by a Big Ten world university, MSU, and the state capitol of Michigan. We see MichiganAvenue as the backbone of the entire region and the most important corridor in the state. Anyone who travels it,
ten years from now, should say, wow. Michigan Avenue is fantastic. If we achieve that goal, the whole region, the
ribs of the body if you will, will also be thriving.
Robert Trezise, President & CEO, LEAP, Inc.
I am enthusiastic about the vision that the region is developing for the Michigan Avenue Corridor which I
believe is beginning to build positive momentum. People are now beginning to grasp the enormous potential of
what the possibilities are, and I am confident that this will lead to even more exciting ideas that will dramatically
improve our communities.
Mark Burnham, Vice President for Governmental Affairs, Michigan State University
As business leaders in this community we have a unique opportunity to ensure that our individual and collective
vision for the Michigan Avenue Corridor is incorporated into the overall Charette process and long term
economic development plan.

On October 17, the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce was proud to host
their seventh annual Healthcare Forum entitled Practical Solutions for Managing
Healthcare. This program is designed to assist and educate both large and small
employers about the upcoming trends in healthcare, discussing ways to be more cost-
effective and of course, healthcare reform and its impact on the business community.
Vern Smith, Managing Principal for Health Management Associates, was our first
keynote speaker and he provided a State of the State of Healthcare address. In that,
he made a strong business case for Medicaid expansion.
Medicaid is currently in the middle of public policy discussions in all 50 states, said
Smith. Medicaid has become Americas largest health program with 75 million people
across the country enrolled at any given point over the year, with over 2 million of
those folks residing in Michigan.
A panel discussion followed and focused on walking attendees through an ACA
Bootcamp, discussing FTE calculations, the 2014 renewal process, and changes to your
benefit packages. Our esteemed panel was comprised of: Gregory Brogan, ManagingPartner of Brogan, Reed, Van Gorder & Associates; Nicole Mitchell, Director of
Business Segment Performance, Middle and Small Group Segment, Blue Cross Blue
Shield of Michigan; and Lauren Dunn, Associate, Foster Swift Collins & Smith, P.C.
The panel was moderated by Kymberly Hess, Director of Human Resources for Yeo &
Yeo, P.C.
The program was wrapped up by an energetic presentation from Jenn Dubey, President
of Evolve Corporate Wellness, CCWC, CNC. Her presentation, Strengthening
Engagement: Building a Culture of Health, discussed how our current healthcare costs
are unsustainable and how businesses can support a healthier staff.
Getting people healthier is in direct competition with the workplace culture, as we

to affect healthy change in your business includes making sure there are healthy food
options available, promoting some movement throughout the day, and offering flexible

A special thanks to the sponsors of the 2013 Healthcare Forum: Blue Cross Blue
Shield of Michigan; Capitol National Bank; Foster Swift Collins & Smith, P.C.;
Brogan, Reed, Van Gorder & Associates; Consumers Mutual Insurance of Michigan;
Fraser Trebilcock Davis & Dunlap, P.C.; Evolve Corporate Wellness; Michigan
Health & Hospital Association; and Physicians Health Plan.
The Healthcare Forum was immediately followed by the October Economic Club
luncheon featuring keynote speaker Shirley Weis, Chief Administrative Officer and
Vice President of Mayo Clinic. Additional remarks were provided by Dennis Swan,
President & CEO of Sparrow Health System, our luncheon sponsor for October.
Weis talk centered around the current promises and challenges facing the future
of healthcare. Some of the exciting breakthroughs to look forward to include
individualized and regenerative medicine, new understandings of cancer, the science of
healthcare delivery, and reforms to the payment model.
We have mapped the human genome which allows us to tailor treatments andmedications specific to everyone on the planet, said Weis. We have taken treatment
to the molecular and cellular level.
Governmental influences remain at the top of the list for challenges the Mayo Clinicis currently, and will continue to, face. As the country deals with an aging population,
many with one or more chronic conditions, and economic issues such as the national
debt, sequestration and a slow recovery, figuring out ways to control healthcare-related
costs will be crucial.
Demographics and debt will force us to change our behaviors, said Weis. You think
about healthcare differently when you pay for it.
Weis emphasized the role that collaboration and relationships will have going forward.
Whether with Accountable Care Organizations, websites like eHealth to stay
connected with patients, or through a clinical affiliation, these relationships will be a
key component of success.
Mayo and our affiliates, such as Sparrow, share the same goal of establishing long-
lasting collaborative relationships to improve patient care and create the future of
healthcare.

Membership Services
The Lansing Regional Chamber is pleased to continue to improve its offerings
to its membership, this time in the form of a new Chamber website and
member management system. The new system, based on a platform offered by
YourMembership.com, allows the Chamber to streamline our website and offer new
interactive platforms like a Career & Volunteer Center, Community Calendar, blog
and forum postings and member profile pages.
The move to a new website and member management system allows more
member-to-member connectivity, one of the main reasons cited by businesses
joining the Chamber, said Rich Howard, Vice President of Business Development
for the Lansing Regional Chamber.
Here are just a few of the benefits the new platform offers:
Each member company and staff member listed in our current system will now
have a page within our website. This page, much like a Facebook page, can be
updated with pictures, videos, daily updates, social media networks and much
more!
The Chamber will now have a password-protected Career & Volunteer Center,
in which members can browse career categories to find openings that fit
their expertise or area of interest; search and view available career openings;apply directly online for openings; as well as post and manage their career
opportunities.
The platform offers several different kinds of blogs personal, group and
community. Members can search by tags and blog content to find what interests
them; post to open blogs; add comments to blog posts (as allowed); embed
video and audio within posts; and even attach files and documents.
A Community Calendar will also be available on the website and will include
Chamber, Community and Member events. Members are able to submit their
own events for inclusion in the Community Calendar, as well as search events
by category or by a weekly or monthly basis.
This is a great opportunity for Chamber members who do not have a web presence,
as they can use their member profile page as their website, said Howard. Members
have told us that they expect these services from the Lansing Regional Chamber and
we are eager to provide them and much more.
Members are encouraged to login to their profile page and ensure that the information
is correct and up-to-date. The Chamber will be running monthly training sessions on
how to best utilize the system. For any questions, please contact Michelle Rahl at 517-
853-6457 or [email protected].

The result will be an impressive $36 million renovation/preservation of the historic
Knapps Centre on Washington Avenue in the heart of Lansings central business
district. The 190,000-square-foot project will house 17,000-square-feet of retail
space on the first floor, 83,000-square feet of Class A office space, 23 high-end
apartments all with outdoor space - and a 6,7,000-square foot atrium stretching
from the fifth floor to the second floor, which will add much-needed light sources,
adding what Clouse calls a phenomenal change to the buildings interior. The
Knapps project will also be home to a new business incubator known as TheRunway, where new entrepreneurs hoping to make it in the fashion industry will
get their start.
The Knapps Centre is also listed on the National Historic Register. One of the
big challenges Eyde Company faced in renovating the building was protecting the
historic integrity of the building, an issue that generated emotional feelings from
long-time residents with treasured memories of the buildings past.
The concerns we heard really drove home to us the importance the exterior of
that building had to so many people, said Clouse. Restoring the building to the
grandeur it had in the 1930s has been expensive, which is why the HUD loans, tax
credits and regional cooperation weve received became so critical.
The Knapps Centre is the last major historic building in downtown Lansing to
undergo renovation, following the Accident Funds renovation of the Ottawa
Street Power Station. The new-look Knapps Centre will be completed and ready
for tenants by the end of the first quarter or early second quarter of 2014.
AGRO-CULTURE LIQUID FERTILIZERS
From its humble beginnings in 1963, when founder Douglas Cook was mixingfertilizer in five gallon buckets in his garage, to its current day status as a global leader
in next generation plant nutrition, Agro-Culture Liquid Fertilizer has stayed true to
it roots. The companys mission is simple: to prosper the farmer with the finest crop
nutrient products.
The formula has worked to the point that Agro-Culture sells its products in all fifty
states, seeing 20 percent annual job growth, and they recently finished construction on
a 57,000-square-foot headquarters north of St. Johns. The impressive facility is LEED
(Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Gold certified, with heating and
cooling systems that leave practically no carbon footprint. The facility does a good job
of capturing the strong history of agriculture in this region, including using barn wood
on the interior walls.
The companys national growth began to takeoff when Troy Bancroft, Doug Cooks
son-in-law, joined the firm in 1983. It was at that time that Agro-Culture developed
a more sophisticated approach to marketing and branding its products. Today, the
company has 28 products on the market and more than 28 products in development
in what is now the largest fertilizer research facility in the nation. The commitment to
research and development is impressive, with 15 full-time staff, including a chemist,
two researchers and two PhDs who oversee 580 acres at the research facility.
We are on the edge of technology and the environment, said CEO Troy
Bancroft. Our mission is to develop products that are needed by farmers and
protective of the environment.
Bancroft sees Agro-Culture continuing is growth pattern in the next several
years. The company hopes to expand to deepen their market nationally and offer
solutions to a wider variety of demands.
EMERGENT BIOSOLUTIONS
Emergent BioSolutions is a global specialty pharmaceutical company that seeks to
protect and enhance life by offering specialized products to healthcare providers
and governments. Emergent, which is well known as the manufacturer of the only
FDA-licensed anthrax vaccine at its Lansing facility, has grown into a major jobs
provider in the region.
Since its founding in 1998, Emergent has not only become a major player on
the national stage for its business, but the company has also been a significant
economic contributor to the Lansing region, investing between $125-$150 million
dollars in its north side campus. The latest development was the opening of a new
administration building. The 32,000-square-foot building redefines the entrance
to Emergents 12.5-acre site and symbolizes the companys commitment to its
employees and the region.
The addition of Building 63 represents a shift in our culture and presents a more
polished look to the outside community, said Emergents executive vice president
Adam Havey. We are celebrating our 15th year in business and the new building
is a step towards the next 15 years.
Emergent included its employees in the design and development of its impressive
new facility, which consists of office space, conference rooms, collaboration spaces
and workout and dining facilities. The company continues to make investments
at the Lansing site, which have included a new manufacturing building in 2006, a
new testing facility in 2012 and future expansion that potentially includes a new
warehouse and science building.
We are definitely proud to call Lansing home, said Havey. Our roots are here.
Our employees enjoy being here and we are committed to this region for the
long-term. We want to thank all our community supporters for helping us be
successful.

IDV SOLUTIONSEMERGING ECONOMY AWARD
Legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus often said the key to making a great golf shot
was to firs t visualize the shot before making the swing. In many respects, software company IDV Solutions has built its international reputation by using
visua lization to he lp it s customers proactively address ri sk.
IDV Solutions flagship product is Visual
Command Center, software that alerts
organizations to potential threats to their
operations, enables them to assess the severity
of these risks, and then act to either inform
employees or prepare for a crisis.
On a map and timeline, the software visualizes
everything a company might want to protect,
including buildings, facilities, supply chains
and people. On the same map, it offers data on
more than a hundred sources of risk, including
political events, natural disasters, health risks to
traveling employees, or severe weather.
For our customers, the stakes are very high,
said IDV Solutions CEO Mark Morrison.
Disruption to their business or damage tofacilities can run thousands, if not millions, of
dollars. Getting ahead of potential risks allows
them to protect their operations and, of course, their
people.
Founded in 2004, IDV Solutions has built an impressive roster of clients
including: Microsoft, Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Department of
Homeland Securit y, Tiffany & Co., Centur yLink and Verizon. The firm has
48 employees, openings for more than 10 positions, and has aggressive growth
plans over the next three years. IDV Solutions recently opened a second office in
Orlando, Florida, and remains committed to Lansing and its headquarters on thecitys south side.
We are bullish on Lansing and excited to be growing here, said Morrison.
PLAS-LABS, INC.INTERNATIONAL TRADE AWARD
Since its founding in 1967, Plas-Labs, Inc. has become a world leader in
acrylic containment and isolation technology. Plas-Labs north Lansing facility
manufactures acrylic glove boxes, anaerobic chambers, nitrogen dry glove boxes,
HEPA-filtered isolation glove boxes and other custom equipment for research
laboratories.
Plas-Labs is well known in the industry for its manufacture of isolation and
containment glove boxes, which are an isolation chamber that protects sensitive
research material, and protects the user from harmful chemicals or biological
hazards.
It is easy to understand why Plas-Labs is being recognized with the
International Trade Award when one considers the global nature of their
business. The companys roster of clients looks like a membership list for the
United Nations including 110 distributors in nearly 60 countries. Its customers
include major pharmaceutical companies and universities, U.S. Department
of Agriculture and many departments in state and federal government. The
company regularly exhibits around the world, including recent displays that were
ongoing simultaneously in Switzerland and Brazil. Plas-Labs was one of the first
companies in the region to recognize the advantages of moving cargo through
the international facilities located at Port Lansing.
Plas-Labs CEO Dave Regan expects the company to continue to grow at an
impressive five percent per year. The secret to its success according to Regan is a
simple, yet time tested philosophy:
The customer is always right, said Regan. We always bend over backwards tosatisfy our customers. We have been in business 45 years and will do what we need
to do to protect our well-established reputation and keep our customers happy.
IDVs Visual Command center alerts organizations to potentialthreats against their operation.

Young Professionals: The Chamber is Right for You!By: Kelly Rossman
If youre a young up-and-comer, you just might
think the Lansing Regional Chamber isnt
for you. Maybe you think its for big wigs and
seasoned members - definitely not the landing
spot for young professionals.
You couldnt be more wrong.
One of the smartest things I did when I started
my business 25 years ago was to join the
Chamber. It wasnt a whim - I didnt have time
for whims, and neither do you. Instead, becoming an active member of the Lansing
Regional Chamber was a strategic decision essential to establishing myself as a credible
business owner. Frankly, as a civil servant coming out of the public sector, I needed the
business street cred. And thats exactly what I got.
But its not enough to simply join the Chamber. At this point in your career, you cant
afford to be a member in name only. Youve got to find ways in which to maximizeyour visibility and credibility with key members of the business community - and the
Chamber offers plenty of ways to do that. Make that membership work for you.
In the 25 years since Ive been a member (yup, I joined my very first year in business), I
have actively volunteered for a number of important Chamber projects. Early on, I had
more time than money, so I donated my time, helping lead the charge for Lansings entry
as an All-American city. One of the business leaders I worked closely with was Jack
Davis, who was then - and continues to be - a wonderful mentor, guide and sounding
board. After seeing me in action, Jack brought clients my way and paved the way for
me to serve on other community boards. He continues to be one of my all-time favorite
people - candid, gruff, and supportive, all at the same time.
Dont let lack of cash be a stumbling block. When the Chamber was looking for raffle
sponsors during my early membership years, I wasnt solvent enough to write a check.
So instead, I offered up 20 hours of PR counseling as a raffle prize. Raffle winners
Will Coultas, then-president of Old Kent (now Fifth Third Bank), and his side kick
Patty Lloyd Barnas (now with Flagstar Bank) turned that 20 hours into a long-term
relationship that led to Old Kents Womens Interest Night and the Bingham School
student bank, among many other great activities we pursued.
Twenty-five years later, Im still proud to be a Chamber member, although my member
role has evolved over the years. Ive done my time, chairing the legislative affairs
committee, and serving on the Capital Choice board and the Chambers Political Action
Committee. Now, though, I donate more money than time to important Chamber
causes, sponsoring the annual Legislative Dinner and contributing to the LRC-PAC,
among other opportunities.
As one of the seasoned members of the Lansing Regional Chamber, I urge you to takea page from my play book and join the crowd. We cant wait to see you!
