MYANMAR BUS & TRUCK MARKET UPDATES
As of December 2017, Yangon owners of trucks weighing two tons or more will be required to register their vehicles with the
Yangon Region Transport Authority. This registration process includes the installation of a GPS tracking system as well as
purchasing automobile insurance.
On January 2018, the Myanmar government agreed to lease a state-owned factory to a joint venture between South Korean
bus-maker Daewoo and the Myanmar Trade Centre, allowing Daewoo buses to be built locally with an investment of $10
million. The company’s production of minibuses and tour coaches is expected to commence by the end of 2018.
As of May 2018, the Yangon Region government has prohibited the use of light trucks as school buses to reduce tra�c conges-
tion and ensure the safety of students. According to the Yangon Region Transport Authority, the government is considering
importing newer buses in order to have the school bus system comply with international standards.
Foton Motor Group, a leader of China’s commercial vehicles recently held an experience marketing activity in Yangon on 30
August 2018. The event showcased the Foton Group’s plan to cooperate with local partners in exploring markets in Myanmar
through strategy introduction, new product releases, and other means.
