Dear Tom and Ray:My terminally ill father has just

given me his 1961 Lincoln Conti-nental. The car is in a storage unitin Michigan, and although it wasmostly restored about eight or nineyears ago, it now needs some re-pairs (I have a list of what it needs)to make it roadworthy. I’d like to fixit up and drive it to the East Coast, and give my father his final ride init. My problem is that I’m livingoverseas, and I need to find a me-chanic I can wire money to so thatwhen it’s ready, I can fly to Michi-gan, pick it up and drive right outto the East Coast. Do you have anyidea about how to find a mechanicwho can help me, who would bereputable and who wouldn’t takeadvantage of an absentee cus-tomer? Many thanks. -- Annie

RAY: We were right there withyou until you mentioned the word“reputable,” Annie.

TOM: Actually, your ideal candi-date would be both reputable andhave some experience with ancientContinentals.

RAY: So start by calling den-tists’ offices near where the car isstored. Ask if they treat any me-chanics with few to no teeth. That’s the age group you’re inter-ested in, Annie.

TOM: Actually, we have a cou-ple of genuine ideas for you. One isto start with the Lincoln and Conti-nental Owners Club. You can find iton the Web at www.lcoc.org. It hasa network of members who all loveand restore old Lincolns. If youpost a request on its website, and

hook up with the regional club inMichigan, it may be able to helpyou find someone near the car whospecializes in old Lincolns.

RAY: The second option wouldbe to search the Mechanics Files(www.cartalk.com/mechanics).That’s a database of mechanicswho have been personally recom-mended by readers of our columnor listeners to our radio show. Yousearch it by entering your ZIPcode.

TOM: You won’t necessarilyfind a Continental specialist thatway, but you should be able to findsome highly recommended me-chanics in the area. Then you cancall a few of them and ask if theyknow anybody who’d be good foryour dad’s car.

RAY: You might get lucky. Oneof the guys you reach might wantto do the work. But more likely,he’ll know another guy in the areawho loves working on older cars.

TOM: We wish you a lot of luck,Annie. It’s a wonderful, sweet thingyou’re doing for your dad. My kidswouldn’t be nearly as nice if I stuckthem with one of my old heaps.

Mechanic Needed ForFather’s Final Ride

BY TED KOOSERU.S. POET LAUREATE, 2004-2006

Joe Paddock is a Minnesota poet and he and I are, as we say in theMidwest, “of an age.” Here is a fine poem about arriving at a stagewhen there can be great joy in accepting life as it comes to us.

ONE’S SHIP COMES INI swear

my way now will beto continue without

plan or hope, to acceptthe drift of things, to shift

from endless effortto joy in, say,

that robin, plunginginto the mossy shallows

of my bird bath andsplashing madly till

the air shines with spray.Joy it will be, say,

in Nancy, pretty in pinkand rumpled T-shirt,

rubbing sleep from her eyes, orjoy even in

just this breathing, freeof fright and clutch, knowing

how one’s ship comes inwith each such breath.

friends the many cards, memorials, visits, thoughts and prayers dedicated to the memory of our loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Edward Frank Nebola, who passed away May 7, 2011.

A very special thank you to the Yankton Care Center and the Dialysis Unit for the loving and great care that was given. A very special thank you also to the Yankton Transit Bus and the EMS for all their special

help in needed times. Thank you to Dr. Frank and Dr. Serck for all the special care and concerns that were shared. We also want to thank

Kevin Opsahl and his staff for their guidance and kindness during this difficult time. They made the trip to Colome for the grave side ceremony possible and the Antique Auto Car Club escorted the procession out of

Yankton. The United Methodist ladies also a big thank you for the wonderful lunch that was served after the services at the church.
