Helping people help themselves
Spindletop Center provides a variety of healthcare services to people with:
• mental illness
• intellectual and developmental disabilities
• Chemical dependency issues
• early Childhood developmental delays
There are 39 community MH/IDD centers in Texas. The community center system was established after the passage of the Texas Mental Health and Mental Retardation Act of 1965. The purpose of community centers is to provide services to people with MH/IDD in an effort to allow them to live and work in the community.
The center provides services in Jefferson, Orange, Hardin and Chambers counties and serves approximately 8,000 individuals a year. Spindletop employs nearly 500 staffers and is governed by a nine-member board of trustees appointed by the commissioners’ courts in the four-county area.

“The process of recovery for me was an extremely long one. Nothing happened in an instant or overnight, but I have picked up the skills necessary to survive in life in recovery from mental illness and drug abuse.”
–B.H., Spindletop Client“[My son is] on his second day of school! I sure do miss him while he is there, but I know that he is having fun and it’s really good for him. ECI [Early Childhood Intervention] has been the best program, and I am really thankful for ECI!”
