Welcome Welcome to our 39th annual celebration of the arts – created and curated in partnership with composers, musicians and artists, taking place amid the timeless beauty of the Welsh Marches.
As a result of the continuing Covid-19 pandemic, our 2021 edition has a different look. To enable compliance with government guidelines, we are presenting hour-long socially-distanced events. To facilitate the presentation of larger-scale concerts, the Festival is widening its reach to include Hereford Cathedral and Leominster Priory for the first time. Before booking, please acquaint yourself with our Covid-19 safety protocols, found at the back of this brochure.
The music programme embraces a variety of constituents – an exploration of music from France centring on Ravel, a mini-feature of Michael Tippett and music by Malcolm Arnold marking his centenary. Supporting events include an assortment of talks and exhibitions – at the Sidney Nolan Trust and Bleddfa Centre – and the popular Presteigne Open Studios weekend.
The Festival’s advocacy for new music continues with exciting works from composer-in-residence Cecilia McDowall – in her 70th year – and others: James Francis Brown, Gary Carpenter, Nathan James Dearden, Sarah Frances Jenkins, Luke Styles, Adrian Sutton, Hilary Tann, Matthew Taylor and James B Wilson, our 2021 RPS Emerging Composer.
I hope you’ll be tempted to join us in and around Radnorshire’s favourite Festival town for another amazing collection of world-class events.
George Vass, artistic director
Croeso
Croeso i’n 39ain dathliad blynyddol o’r celfyddydau – wedi’i greu a’i guradu mewn partneriaeth â chyfansoddwyr, cerddorion ac artistiaid, ac yn cael ei gynnal yn harddwch bythol y Mers.
O ganlyniad i bandemig parhaus Covid-19, mae rhifyn 2021 ychydig yn wahanol. Er mwyn gallu cydymffurfio â chanllawiau’r llywodraeth, rydym yn cynnal digwyddiadau awr o hyd gan gadw pellter cymdeithasol. Er mwyn hwyluso’r gwaith o gyflwyno cyngherddau ar raddfa fwy, mae’r ŵyl yn ehangu ei chyrhaeddiad i gynnwys Eglwys Gadeiriol Henffordd a Phriordy Llanllieni am y tro cyntaf. Cyn archebu, dylech ddarllen ein protocolau diogelwch Covid-19, sydd i’w gweld yng nghefn y llyfryn hwn.
Mae’r rhaglen gerddoriaeth yn cynnwys amrywiaeth o gyfansoddion – archwilio cerddoriaeth o Ffrainc sy’n canolbwyntio ar Ravel, darn byr o waith Michael Tippett a cherddoriaeth gan Malcolm Arnold i ddathlu ei ganmlwyddiant. Mae’r digwyddiadau ategol yn cynnwys amrywiaeth o sgyrsiau ac arddangosfeydd – yn Ymddiriedolaeth Sidney Nolan ac Oriel Bleddfa – a phenwythnos poblogaidd Stiwdios Agored Llanandras.
Mae’r gwaith o eirioli dros gerddoriaeth newydd yn parhau gyda gweithiau cyffrous gan y cyfansoddwr preswyl Cecilia McDowall – sy’n 70 eleni – ac eraill: James Francis Brown, Gary Carpenter, Nathan James Dearden, Sarah Frances Jenkins, Luke Styles, Adrian Sutton, Hilary Tann, Matthew Taylor a James B Wilson, cyfansoddwr newydd RPS 2021.
Rwy’n gobeithio y gallwn eich denu i ymuno â ni yn hoff dref Wyliau Sir Faesyfed a’r cyffiniau, ar gyfer casgliad anhygoel arall o ddigwyddiadau o’r radd flaenaf.

TAM O’SHANTER AND THE AVANT-GARDE: MALCOLM ARNOLD AT 100
Christopher Austin
Few composers as broadly popular as Malcolm Arnold have been so broadly misunderstood. For most of his creative life his work was beset by controversy due to an aesthetic stance seemingly at odds with tides of musical history. Now, despite his music having found the widest audiences through cinema and recordings, Arnold’s status as a permanent yet popular outsider seems embedded more than ever, with the documentation of his life and work in books, articles and film often reinforcing a narrative that reduces the man and his music to a cypher in an aesthetic war that never really was.
To mark Malcolm Arnold’s centenary, Christopher Austin takes a fresh look at the work of this singular creative artist, where nothing is quite what it seems.

A DICTIONARY of INTERESTING
and IMPORTANT DOGS
Peter J Conradi
In his book A Dictionary of Interesting and Important Dogs, Peter J Conradi embraces the intriguing, provocative, the essential and the trivial, foraying into history, literature and
personal anecdote to unearth a treasure trove of legends. He ranges from Jane Welsh Carlyle’s dog Nero – who tried to learn to fly – through Shakespeare’s dislike of dogs to the lapdogs secreted in first class on the Titanic and Edinburgh’s Greyfriars Bobby, reputed to have stayed by his master’s grave for fourteen years.
Peter J Conradi FRSL is biographer of Iris Murdoch; his most recent book Family Business: A Memoir was published by Seren in 2019.

Fiona Sampson
Elizabeth Barrett Browning, who grew up in Herefordshire, was one of the nineteenth century’s most influential writers. Nominated for Poet Laureate, she was buried as a heroine of the Italian struggle for independence. Hugely famous, she helped change British popular opinion on a range of contemporary socio-political issues; yet both her life and her work also hold up an extraordinary mirror to life in Britain today.
Fiona Sampson, a leading poet and writer, has received numerous national and international awards and been
published in 38 languages. Her books include In Search of Mary Shelley (2018) and Two-Way Mirror: The Life of Elizabeth Barrett Browning (2021).

Nicholas Murray
Following his exploration in 2019 of the dystopian visions of Brave New World and 1984, poet and biographer Nicholas Murray looks at the visionaries of the Utopian tradition who dared to dream of alternative and better worlds. He will look in particular at the works of the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century utopians such as William Morris’ News from Nowhere, Edward Bellamy’s Looking Backward and feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Herland.

Colour of the Sky – Auschwitz PaintingsSir Sidney Nolan began to contemplate and make art works about the concentration camps as early as 1944. In 1962, Nolan finally came face to face with the horrors when he travelled to Poland; the trip would haunt him and influence much of his work during the years to come. For the first time, Nolan’s Auschwitz paintings are presented along with original photographs Nolan made during his visit.

COVID-19 SAFETYWe take seriously our responsibility to keep audience members, artists, staff and volunteers safe during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, and therefore ask that you read the following information carefully before booking.
The 2021 Presteigne Festival will operate in line with government regulation in place at the time of our events. This may vary, depending if the venue concerned is in Wales or England.
We have made assumptions based on the best current available guidance about audience numbers, with safe social-distancing. Guidance may change before the Festival period and we therefore reserve the right to maintain flexibility on venue capacities. Should we be forced to reduce capacities, we will give priority to those who booked first.
Although refunds are not normally made, they will be available should Government Covid-19 guidance force the cancellation of all or part of the 2021 Presteigne Festival.
We reserve the right to refuse entry to anyone not willing to comply with the relevant regulation, or to ask that person to leave the venue.
Thank you for your co-operation in helping to make the 2021 Presteigne Festival as safe and relaxed as possible under what may be difficult circumstances.
BOOKING INFORMATION The Presteigne Festival uses a simple system with multiple ticket types available for the different areas of venues used by the organisation. In 2021 all seats MUST be booked in advance.
Premium tickets are available for events at St Andrew’s Church, Presteigne, and in Hereford Cathedral; they are numbered and afford excellent views of the stage; sight-lines in other areas are less good.
Student tickets are available to individuals over the age of 10 and in full-time education (including university). Student concessions are available in both Premium and other areas for all events.
The 2021 Presteigne Festival will operate a Covid-19 safe environment; we expect our audience to follow this simple code:
• Please use hand sanitiser before entering Festival performance venues;• Please wear a face covering at all times when inside Festival performance venues;• Please wait to be shown to your seat by a member of Festival staff;• After the performance, please remain seated until shown out by a member of Festival staff.
Please note that as a result of social-distancing, tickets for many events will be in great demand. We strongly advise early booking online – all tickets MUST be booked in advance.
