The next Trustee School will be held at the Marriott Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach on October 3—6, 2021.
The FPPTA Education Committee is presently in the process of finalizing the program agenda.
October will be the 22nd anniversary of the beginning of the Certified Public Pension Trustee (CPPT) Program. Since its first offering, the FPPTA has recorded over 2000 trustees who have entered the most comprehensive public pension trustee certifi-
cation program in the country.
The motto of the Education Committee is to provide a better program from the last. We have completely redesigned the CPPT
program from your suggestions in the survey evaluations. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas.

Dr. David DeLong is president of Smart Workforce Strategies, a firm that helps organizations implement practical solutions for critical skill shortages, while also building tomorrow’s workforce. He has been a research
fellow at the MIT AgeLab and an adjunct professor at Babson College. He has delivered keynote talks and workshops for Microsoft, MasterCard, Bank of America, and Lockheed Martin, among others. Here’s what he had to say about his upcoming keynote at the FPPTA’s Annual Conference. “Serving as a trustee of a public
pension plan poses tremendous challenges in a time of unprecedented change. The aging workforce, a younger generation of employees with different values, new technologies, major budget constraints all combine
to make the trustee’s role more complex than ever. Let’s share some practical, engaging ideas for:
Improving communication skills when dealing with plan participants & beneficiaries, government officials,
and investment managers
Mastering complex subjects more quickly & confidently
Making better decisions to benefit your plan’s long term health.”

As pandemic restrictions ease in the United States and we return to normalcy, what can we project about the future of investment themes that have dominated during the last year or so? Will they continue, or will things
revert to previous patterns? The panel will look at several themes including: value vs. growth, international vs.
domestic equities, the risk of inflation, and where large cap tech stock might go from here?

A roundtable conversation by active trustees discussing what happens when trustees don’t connect with their pension partners, why this happens, and how it can be changed. The focus will be on communications
between trustees and those who matter: plan sponsors, participants, and stakeholders. The trustees will share lessons learned, as well as their knowledge about what tools work most effectively so pension boards
connect with their pension partners.

Raymond T. Edmondson Service Award The Raymond T. Edmondson Service Award was established in 2004 to recognize the decades of leadership he provided to the Florida Public Pension Trustees Association, and to annually acknowledge a member of the Association who emulates his tireless commitment to protecting the retirement security of
Florida's public employees and their retirement systems.
Raymond T. Edmondson Awards
Susan Marden has been the FPPTA’s public relations consultant since 2009. She brought three decades of communications experience to the organization, along with her skills as a writer and editor. She also contin-ued to pen op-eds on our behalf, worked tirelessly on our SB 84 legislative initiative, pioneered video materi-
als for our online offerings, and kept up a steady stream of social media advocacy on our behalf.
Fred Nesbitt, PhD, is our media relations consultant. Fred is the former Executive Director and Legislative Counsel for the National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems (NCPERS), retired in 2006. He also served as for 12 years as Director of Governmental Affairs and Political Action for the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), so he brings many years’ experience working within government settings, but also he brings a historic knowledge of pension policy. Fred put his considerable knowledge to work for us during the past year, advising us and providing guidance on legislative issues, and developing the Pension Plan Data Center – a breakthrough source for data comparisons, with all 485 local pension plans in Florida,
an initiative that we will build upon for years to come.
Michael Spencer has been sharing his knowledge and experience with the FPPTA for 22-years. He spent 31 years working in investment management, including as a Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Of-ficer, and is a Chartered Financial Analyst. Michael’s commitment to the FPPTA has always been exception-al and he has generously provided us with insights from the perspective of management we would not other-wise have had. He helped redesign the CPPT program in its current form back in 1999 and gave freely of his time and talents in helping design the education platform we depended on during the pandemic. His contribu-
tions have made the FPPTA’s educational programs better than any others in the field.
Due to the cancellation of the 2020 Annual Conference, we were unable to present the award last year, so we would like to acknowledge the 2020 recipient, Patrick Langan. Patrick has been handling all of our audio-visual needs since 1996. Patrick has kept pace unfailingly with our rapid growth and our ambition for each trustee school and conference to be better than the last. Patrick has brought to us increasingly complex tech-nical capabilities, often requiring an investment of money, as well as untold hours of time for his company. Patrick often works through the night at our events, ensuring everything goes off without a hitch. This unsung
hero, who labors behind the scenes, has never sought the spotlight, but his efforts make us shine.

She also has organized volunteer opportunities for her high school student government to read to children, and organized contributions for Big Bend Homeless Coalition. Chloe’s activities don’t end there, throughout high school she has participated in varsity cheerleading, National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society among other activities. Chloe graduated from Leon High School with distinction, Summa Cum Laude. She will matriculate to Elon University in 2021 and plans to major in biology as a path to a
career in medicine. Chloe Chwalik
