Memphis residential utility bills rank the lowest in cost for the fifth straight yearSince 2013, Memphis has earned the top spot for having the lowest combined typical winter residential bill among selected cities across the country.

The largest three-service municipal utility system in the nation, MLGW delivers electricity, natural gas and water throughout Memphis and Shelby County. Each year we strive to not only deliver the best possible price, but also the highest quality service. One way we measure our performance is to examine how Memphis’ typical winter bills compare to other cities in the U.S.

We survey more than 50 cities, including many that are geographically close to Memphis, as well as utilities that are similar in size. All costs covered in this survey are based on published rates effective Jan. 1, 2017.

MLGW started collecting data on rates in the early 1990s. Memphis continues to outperform many cities in terms of what customers pay for electricity, natural gas, water and wastewater services. Last year, a typical winter residential bill was $243.79. This year, the bill increased slightly to $253.09, a difference of $9.30. MLGW’s financial management remains a driving force in keeping utility bills as low as possible.

PARTICIPATING CITIES

The following guidelines were used in providing the utility figures:• Calculations are based on monthly consumption.

• Seasonal rates are used when applicable.

• Special early payment discounts are excluded.

• Taxes not booked as revenue by the utility are excluded.

• Special rates are not used for electric space heating and water heating.

We are proud to present the 2017 Utility Bill Comparisons for Selected U.S. Cities. MLGW, a division of the City of Memphis, compiled the data. The survey compares residential, commercial and industrial electric, gas, water and wastewater bills at various usage levels with rates in effect on Jan. 1, 2017. Only FIRM RATES are used. Cities were selected on the basics of size and geographic location.

Memphis tops list for low winter utility billsFor the past 26 years, Memphis customers have spent less for their winter utility bills than their counterparts in many metro areas. Since 1992, Memphis has captured the top ranking 15 times. The 2017 ranking includes what a homeowner would pay for 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity, 200 centum cubic feet (CCF) of gas and 10 CCF each for water and sewer. The dollar amounts have been rounded.

ELECTRICITY

MLGW buys electricity from the Tennessee Valley Authority. TVA sells its power on a non-profit basis to 154 local power companies. As TVA’s largest customer, MLGW purchases 11 percent of TVA’s power.

MLGW owns and maintains over 1,000 miles of transmission lines and four connection points or substations with TVA. The utility com-pany is capable of meeting peak system demands of up to 3.6 million kilowatts for its 428,000 electric customers.

In 2015 the American Public Power Association’s Reliable Public Power Provider program gave MLGW its highest ranking – Diamond level status which lasts for three years.

One kilowatt-hour equals ten 100-watt light bulbs staying on for an hour.

NATURAL GAS

MLGW currently buys natural gas and moves it via three interstate pipeline companies, Texas Gas Transmission Corp., ANR Pipeline Co. and Trunkline Gas Co. MLGW supplies 313,000 gas customers with 32 billion cubic feet of gas a year purchased from more than 30 suppliers.

In addition to natural gas, MLGW also operates a wholesale Liquefied Natural Gas facility and two retail Compressed Natural Gas stations for our customers.

ARTESIAN WATER

MLGW operates one of the largest artesian water systems in the world. On a peak day, MLGW can deliver up to 250 million gallons of water to more than 255,000 customers. In the layer of water-bearing sands beneath the city, there is an abundant supply of naturally pure, high-quality water that will meet the daily needs of a city several times the size of Memphis.

WASTEWATER

The City of Memphis Public Works Department provides the area with wastewater treatment facilities. Currently, the daily usage throughout the system stands at about 150 million gallons per day – well below capacity. The system can treat up to 225 million gallons per day.
