Telemedicine: A Key Tool in Healthcare Industry Transformation
The use of Telemedicine has been established as an important resource or rural providers to provide care to
patients they might not otherwise have access to. As the healthcare industry shifts to value-based care to
cost costs, improve quality, and improve patient satisfaction, the use of telemedicine has grown rapidly. For
hospitals and providers that are a part of a voluntary ACO or other Shared Savings Program, they are
expected to increase the use of telemedicine and other mobile health technologies by CMS.
In addition, patient demand is growing for more affordable and accessible care, offering the opportunity for
health care providers to adapt their business models to the new health care marketplace with the use of
telemedicine. In the future, Telemedicine will only become more important as alternative payment models are
used, and telemedicine is a powerful model of delivery that can help to achieve quality and cost-savings
goals.

Working Together for Success in Telemedicine
The successful implementation and use of Telemedicine in a hospital and community does not happen
overnight; it takes purposeful processes, support, and networking to make it successful. By definition, it takes
more than one participating organization in order to provide telehealth services, making it imperative to
develop a consortium of like-minded organizations with shared goals in order to be successful. Organizations
who have been through implementation before can provide valuable feedback, and the sharing of solutions to
current challenges can enable the group to create solutions. Through the ITTC, hospitals will be helped to
more fully realize the potential of telehealth in their development of shared savings.
The goal of the Iowa Telemedicine Transformation Consortium (ITTC) is to build a
group of hospitals and other stakeholders that work together to strengthen the rural
health infrastructure and increase access for small or rural Iowa hospitals.
This will be accomplished by supporting Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) or
Shared Savings investment activities specifically focused on
Telemedicine or mobile health equipment installation and use.
