HOW TO MAKE IT AFFORDABLE1. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is
important no matter your income or need. It will determine the level of aid you receive, what loans you might obtain, and sometimes, what scholarships you’ll receive. The application is available online starting Jan. 1 at fafsa.ed.gov. For priority consideration for federal, state and institutional funds, submit the FAFSA by Feb. 15 each year. Use CMU’s Title IV school code: 00243.
2. Keep your eye on the mailbox. After completing the FAFSA and being accepted to CMU, you will receive a financial award notice in early April that may include:
» Scholarships » Grants » Work-study opportunities » Student and/or parent loans
3. Apply for scholarships. CMU offers hundreds of scholarships, including awards for academic success. Visit financialaid.cmich.edu for details. Scour the Internet for state and national awards. Also, ask your high school guidance counselor for available local scholarships.
4. Enroll in CMU’s interest-free payment plan. For more information, visit cmich.edu/cmupaymentplan.
5. Take a job on campus. CMU offers thousands of jobs, from web development to library assistantships to working at a residence hall desk. If your award notice (sent after you complete the FAFSA) includes work-study, you’ll be on a priority list. Earn money, get involved and meet people. (Fact: Involved students are more likely to graduate.)
