The right respiratory protection equipment can only be chosen once an in-depth study has been carried out on the job in question and on the conditions for using the equipment, including an assessment of:
- Oxygen content. - Types of pollutant (gas, vapour, dust, etc.) and their concentration in the air. - Pollutant toxicity (peak concentration values authorized).
A barrier and a protector against the risks of inhaling air-transmissible infectious agents such as dust, pollution, viruses, allergens, they mandatorily fall under one of the following 3 levels of protection:
The Valmy masks meet EN 149 : 2001 + A1 : 2009 standard requirements and are certifi ed by a notifi ed body.
The user is responsible for the choice of the protective equipment and must check that the protective equipment is suitable (after inventory and evaluation of the risks). Please refer to national regulations.

Thanks to an ambitious research and development programme lasting over two years and
total commitment from Valmy staff, our SPIREOR® range of masks was patented in 2008.
We have created an innovative mechanical micro-fi ltration process using high-tech fi bres that
ensure optimal fi ltration and greater breathing comfort, considerably reducing user breathing
effort.

Breathing resistance when inhaling
Valve
When inhaling, the whole SPIREOR® fi ltering material creates an effective barrier against solid and liquid particles and purifi es inhaled air without provoking any resistance.
Breathing resistance when exhaling
When exhaling, the whole SPIREOR® surface makes exhaledair release easier. Breathing comfort is considerably en-hanced and the wearer is optimally protected.

Assisted ventilation masksEN 12941 or EN 146: assisted ventilation fi ltering equipment incorporating a headset or a hood, providing protection against certain gases, vapours and dust (sold and/or liquid aerosols) or providing mixed gas/vapour and dust protection. This type of equipment also integrates an alarm that notifi es insuffi cient airfl ow.
This equipment basically comprises the following components:• a headset or a hood,• a turbo (ventilator-motor), designed to be worn by the mask user, that distributes ambient fi ltered air to the face piece,• a fi lter or fi lters used for transporting all aspirated air,• exhalation valves or other apertures, depending on the model, that evacuate exhaled air and air.
This equipment is divided into three categories: TH1, TH2 and TH3.
EN 12942: assisted ventilation fi ltering equipment comprising a full mask, half mask or quarter mask. Insulating airline masks.EN 14594: Continual air fl ow, compressed air masks..EN 12021: compressed air compatibility for insulating protective equipment.
Body Protection
EN 340 is the basic standard that defines general requirements for protective clothing in terms of ergonomics, aging, size and marking. This general standard is completed by other specifi c standards for certain risks. Among the risks that particularly interest us, there are several that are commonly used:
• EN 14605: protection against liquid aerosols. This standard defi nes type 4 overalls.
• EN ISO 13982-1: protection against solid chemical particles suspended in the air. This standard defi nes type 5 overalls.
• EN 13034: limited protection against liquid chemical spraying. This standard defi nes type 6 overalls.
• The EN 1149 standard deals with electrostatic properties. It is interesting to monitor electrostatic accumulation and discharge on PPE whenever flammable vapours, gases and dust are present in the working environment. A spark generated by an electrostatic discharge that occurs on most non-treated, standard synthetic materials, may create an impact that is suffi cient for provoking an explosion.
• EN 1073-2: protection against radioactive particle contamination.
Ear Protection European Directive 203/10/EC relating to noise, defines the following thresholds for taking action: • 80dB(A)/135dB(C): Low exposure limit triggering action: auditory
protection must be provided for the operator as soon as the level of constant noise and/or peak noise is reached.
• 85dB(A)/137dB(C): High exposure limit resulting in the obligation for individual protection to be worn as soon as this level of constant noise and/or peak noise is reached.
• Threshold exposure limit: 87dB(A)/140dB(C): maximum operator noise exposure limit. The employer must implement all technical and organizational measures to reduce exposure to noise and the consequential risks as much as possible.
EN 352-1: headband, hearing protection headsets.En 352-2: ear plugs.
Eye ProtectionEN 166: general specifi cation for afocal glasses, ophthalmic glasses, goggles and face shields.EN 169: Filters for welding and related applications (Requirements related to the transmission factor and to recommended welding application.)EN 170: Filters for ultraviolet (Requirements related to the transmission factor and to recommended application.)
Hand ProtectionSingle use, disposable medical gloves are provided for under European Directive 93/42/EEC.
The EN 455 standard applies for EC glove marking and comprises 3 parts: • EN 455-1: hole detection• EN 455-2: physical properties• EN 455-3: glove biocompatibilitySingle use, disposable protection gloves are provided for under European Directive 89/686/EEC.
The following standards are applicable and are related to glove marking: • EN 420: general requirements (ergonomics, design, harmlessness, comfort,
effectiveness, marking, information leafl et)• EN 374: biological and chemical risk. It is divided into 3 parts which are: • EN 374-1: terminology and performance required. • EN 374-2: penetration resistance. • EN 374-3: chemical permeation resistance (6 levels).• EN 421: ionizing radiation and radioactive contamination.• EN 388: mechanical risk (abrasion, cutting, ripping, perforation).• EN 407: thermal risk.
Hygiene
EN 14 683: 2006 – Reference for surgical masksInfectious agents may be transmitted in various ways during surgical interventions carried out in operating theatres and in other medical establishments. Transmission sources are, for example, the noses and mouths of members of the surgical team. Surgical masks are mainly intended for protecting patients from infectious agents that are exhaled through the noses and mouths of members of the surgical team and also, under certain circumstances, they are intended for protecting wearers against spattering from potentially contaminated liquids. Scope of application: the current European standard specifies the requirements for design and performance, as well as the methods for testing surgical masks intended for limiting the transmission of infectious agents by members of the surgical team to patients (and vice versa in certain situations) during surgical interventions carried out in operating theatres and in other medical establishments that impose equivalent requirements. The current European standard is not applicable to masks intended exclusively for the individual protection of members of the surgical team.
