MBAThe Victoria MBA gives business proessionals

We regard the MBA as a programme that will help

MBA programme paths
There are three programme paths
to completing a Victoria MBA:
Staircasing
Staircasing (as let) entails completing a
Certicate in Management Studies, ollowed by a
Postgraduate Diploma in one o three disciplines.
On successul completion you would then apply
to be admitted to the MBA and take an additional
eight MBA courses, as well as proessional
development. The staircasing option is donepart time and would usually take 32 months to
complete.
Direct entrypart time
Direct entry as a part-time student also usually
takes 32 months to complete. The part-time
option covers the same courses as the ull-time
MBA, but two courses are taken each trimester
or eight trimesters as per the table on page 9. A
wide range o proessional development courses
are oered during the program, six o which must
be completed as part o the MBA program.
Full time
Full-time MBA students take an intensive course
o study with our courses each trimester or our
trimesters, plus the proessional development
requirement. This path takes approximately 18
months, depending on the research project.

The programme
Orientation and proessional development workshops
Orientation
A two-day orientation programme is held during
a weekend prior to the rst week o classes. The
orientation programme is compulsory or all new
MBA students. It covers the learning philosophy
and teaching objectives or the programme and
gives an introduction to services and resources
including the Universitys libraries.
Working in study groups is an importantpart o the MBA learning experience. During
the orientation weekend, students have the
opportunity to interact in a variety o team
exercises beore being ormed into study groups.
Proessional development workshops
During your programme o study you will be
required to attend six days o proessional
development rom a selection o weekend
workshop topics. Examples include:
executive presentation skills
lateral thinking and creativity skills
accelerated learning and study skills
career management
consultancy skills.
These workshops are designed to develop
career skills and enhance your employment
opportunities upon completion o your study.
The curriculum
The curriculum comprises our parts:
1. Core discipline courses designed to give
you conceptual depth across the unctional
spectrum o modern business.
2. Contemporary management courses designed
to highlight issues in management.
3. Strategic capstone courses that integrate
and bring together rameworks rom other
unctional business areas to provide a
strategic perspective.
4. Elective courses that cater to individual
student interest.
The mode o delivery is ace-to-ace lecture
ormat supported by class discussion and
debate. Each course has a total o 24 hours o
teaching contact time. Learning interaction
includes working ater class in study groups and
completing applied projects and assignments
based on real business organisations.
All classes are taught in the evenings and
weekends at our downtown Pipitea Campus.
Completion o the degree requires six days o
personal/proessional development and 16
courses.

Part 1: Six core discipline courses
MMBA 502 Commercial Law
An overview o some areas o commercial law
signicant or business organisations, including
the law o contract, intellectual property law,
the law o organisations and alternative dispute
resolution.
MMBA 503 Economics, Organisation and
Markets
The course ocuses on providing students
with a conceptual appreciation o the modern
literature in industry, organisation and applied
microeconomics and on demonstrating how this
body o literature can be used in thinking about a
wide range o management problems.
MMBA 505 Organisational Behaviour
An overview o organisational behaviour and its
relevance to management. Specic areas include:
individual, interpersonal and group
behaviour and perormance
organisational structure, design and change
communication
leadership
managerial roles.
MMBA 507 Information Systems
Inormation systems change organisations and
determine their competitive strength. In this
course we explore the technology, learn how to
manage it well, how to make change positive and
how to exploit the technology to best eect in the
market and supply chain.
MMBA 508 Problem-solving and
Decision-making
Critical reections on the role o emotion, reason
and morality in creative and analytical thinking.
MMBA 509 Accounting for Managers
An introduction to the concepts o nancial and
management accounting, covering the content
o nancial statements; concepts o value and
prot, cost behaviour and cost-volume-prot
relationships; and cost allocation principles and
behavioural underpinnings in the wider context o
perormance evaluation.

Part 2: Four contemporary management courses
MMBA 516 Corporate Finance
The course provides a thorough understanding o
the undamental concepts o Corporate Finance.
Topics covered include discounted cash ow
valuation, interest rates, investment decisionmaking, the risk and return underpinnings o the
cost o capital, introduction to options and their
application to corporate nance, capital structure
theories, securities issuance, and mergers and
acquisitions.
MMBA 518 Marketing Management
Focuses on an analysis o the marketing unction
in organisations. The concepts required or
development o a marketing plan including
products and services, pricing, promotion anddistribution.
MMBA 519 Human Resource Management
Concentrates on current issues in the
management o human resources in modern
organisations rom strategic and unctional
perspectives. Topics include: job design,recruitment, selection and orientation;
career management, development, managing
perormance and remuneration; health and
saety; and employee retention, exit and
retirement. The course looks at how eective
human resource management can add value to
the organisation or business.
MMBA 520 Operations and Services
Management
Looks at management o operating sectors omanuacturing and service organisations, with
emphasis on operations strategy, capacity,
inventory and quality. Examination o the major
activities involved in deploying key physical
resources o the organisation to deliver
competitive goods and services.

Part 3: Four strategic capstone courses
MMBA 532 Business Research Project
Consists o the supervised execution o an
approved research paper or business topic.
Participants study a topic o interest in depth,
seeking to answer a research question usingappropriate design and methodology. The
business topic option allows participants to
negotiate access to a particular organisation and
investigate an agreed topic or problem on its
behal. Project supervision will be provided by a
member o academic sta teaching on the MBA
programme.
MMBA 534 Strategic Management
An examination o the strategic issues and
tasks aced by general managers, determiningthe purpose and direction o the organisation,
establishing objectives and ormulating strategies
to achieve them, taking account o changes in
the environment and the organisations total
competence.
MMBA 560 Leading Change
It has become taken or granted that
organisations must change to survive and thrive
in an increasingly turbulent world. However,
most change interventions ail to deliver theirobjectives and amongst the recipients o
change there is evidence o growing cynicism,
together with eelings o being overwhelmed by
constant change. This course draws on a blend
o academic and practitioner perspectives and
considers cases o change success and ailure in
an attempt to generate a deeper understanding
o the challenges and the complexities o leading
change eectively.
MMBA 565 Innovation and EntrepreneurshipCreativity with innovation, leadership, critical
thinking and action-oriented research are some
o the most crucial dimensions o strategic
management acing business executives, policy
makers and o course, entrepreneurs, in New
Zealand. This course aims to produce thinking
managers and innovators or tomorrows
organisations who can crat cultures that oster
creativity and innovation.

MMBA 535 Advanced Strategic Management
This course develops material rom MMBA 534
Strategic Management with particular emphasis on
the issue o implementation o corporate strategy.
MMBA 545 Creative Leadership
This course will attract students who want to
take a hands-on approach to their leadership
development. It is a creative exploration o
the eld o leadership comprising theoreticalinsights, experiential exercises and introspective
reection. Projects will provide students with
the opportunity to experience their own unique
personal leadership challenge.
MMBA 549 Systems Thinking and Creative
Problem-Solving
A systems approach provides a new way o
looking at organisations and their management
that encourages holistic thinking. It promoteslearning organisations and enables managers
to deal with the complexity o the tasks they
ace. Dierent aspects o systems thinking and
dierent methodologies are taught individually
and in combination.
MMBA 553 Project Management
Theory and practice o the management
o projects in organisations, including: the
system development cycle; organisational and
behavioural issues; and systems and proceduresor scheduling, resource allocation, control and
evaluation o projects.
MMBA 555 Marketing Communication
Eective marketing communication is a vital
component o successul business practice.
Thereore, this course will be o interest and value
to all participants wanting to gain insight into the
management o the marketing communications
process, rom a strategic perspective, in both
public and private sector organisations.
MMBA 556 Financial Statement Analysis
The analysis and evaluation o corporate
perormance, nancial condition and uture
prospects as set out in published annual reports
and nancial statements. Students learn how to
assess the relationship o this inormation to the
market price or the shares in the respective entities.
MMBA 558 International Business
Consideration is given to the key environmental,
institutional and organisational actorsinuencing international business. The course
involves investigation o contemporary issues
relating to international business, and the
development o appropriate management
strategies or conducting business globally.
MMBA 561 Strategic/International Human
Resource Management
A critical analysis o models o strategic human
resource management within the context o
international practice. The ocus is on thestrategic management o employees in a manner
that contributes to competitive advantage. Issues
o human resource planning, policy and cross-
unctional integration are addressed.
MMBA 562 Managing Employment Relations
The theory and practice o entering into,
managing and ending the employment
relationship, including within economic, political,
social and technological contexts, is explored.The range o employment-related law and
policy, the rights and duties o employers and
employees and the roles o trade unions and
employer groups within a New Zealand context
are examined.
MMBA 570 Marketing Strategy
This course is concerned with the development,
evaluation and implementation o marketing
strategy in dierent organisational environments.
Participants will be introduced to a variety o
analytical rameworks or making decisions
implicit in marketing planning.
MMBA 571 Negotiations: Strategy and Process
Negotiating is a core management competency.
This course covers theories underlying
negotiations and develops skills in applying the
negotiation process. It includes insights into
international and cross-cultural negotiation
contexts.
MMBA 574 The Information Economy
This course explores the economic and strategic
principles underpinning the development o
inormation and economy and e-commerce, and
develops skills in critical analysis o the ways in
which rms and governments are participating in
the developing inormation economy.

The Victoria admission test
Domestic studentsAll domestic students wishing to be considered
or the MBA programme take the Victoria MBA
Admission Test. This is a two-hour test covering
three sections:
a business case study
reading comprehension and critical thinking
numerical skills and logical thinking.
International studentsAll international student enrolment applications
are processed by Victoria International.

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)
and receive a score o 550 or more.
International applications whose rst language
is not English will also be required to undertake

How do you place a value on something
as abstract as knowledge? At 43, having
exited ownership o a typical New Zealand
small business I had run or nearly 20 years, I

The Student Health Service is a general medical
practice or all students enrolled at Victoria. The
clinic is staed by both doctors and nurses and

card pay a small consultation ee.
Career development and employment
Vic Careers provides advice and inormation to
help you make inormed career decisions. It oers
condential interviews with trained advisers,
workshops to discuss interview techniques and
writing CVs, and assistance in identiying career
opportunities.
Stress management
The Victoria Counselling Service has trained
counsellors who are available, ree o charge, to
discuss personal or academic issues aecting
your sense o wellbeing, relationships or learning.
You are also welcome to contact the MBADirectors to discuss any issues you may have.
Sport, recreation and leisure
The Rec Centre, located at Kelburn Campus, oers
hundreds o activities including exercise circuits,
aerobics classes, yoga, tai chi and pilates, and
sports ranging rom archery to volleyball.
Pipitea Fitness is located on the basement level
o Rutherord House and has a tness studio witha selection o machines, ree weights and cardio
equipment, and tness classes. There is also the
Pipitea Fitness Dance Room, an air-conditioned
room with a carpeted oor, ull-length mirrors
