History of Construction Group at Stanford (3)
2008: Added Sustainable Design & Construction (SDC) program track
Response to CEE Department’s theme of “Engineering for Sustainability”, and Woods Institute for the Environment Develop new kinds of multidisciplinary, technically sophisticated construction engineers Architecture, Infrastructure and Energy courses broaden Structural Engineering-Construction focus of DCI Prepare alumni for career roles as:
project engineers and project managers in “green” engineering and construction firms Developers of buildings and infrastructure sustainability coordinators for “construction buyers” green consultants green tech ventures, green tech investors…

Curricula Rationale
“Project team members must exhibit a broad range of knowledge, expertise and comprehensive project viewpoints. To balance this need for professional breadth and depth and provide for pursuit of individual interests and goals during graduate studies, the CEM, DCI, & SDC curricula are based on a common core of 6 academic areas of emphasis which are weighted to provide a strong academic foundation for practicing CEM, DCI, and SDC professionals.”

Design Construction Integration (DCI)
Important objectives of the DCI program
• Prepares students for multidisciplinary collaborative teamwork in an integrated design and construction process.
• Prepares students that understand the cost, schedule and performance consequences of their design decisions.
• Prepares construction managers that understand the design process, as well as concerns and constrains of designers to enable them to add value to the project.
