TRUSTEE EMERITUS MEMBERS
DEAR FRIENDS,
Last year was a year of significant change for Tree Trust, some of it extraordinarily difficult. Notably, we lost our CEO, Dave Hawes, to cancer in February. Dave had been a part of Tree Trust for 32 years, first as a crew leader, later as head of operations, and finally as CEO. His vision, knowledge and sense of humor have been greatly missed. Please read the tribute on the following pages to get an idea of the impact Dave made at Tree Trust and in our community.
Despite this loss to Tree Trust, our staff persevered and served more than 4,800 people – an indication of the strength of the organization and the dedication and commitment of our people. Our 2010 programs helped develop self-confidence and real-world skills in our participants – many of whom have had to overcome tremendous challenges to find employment. And our partnerships with communities, schools and parks helped keep our green spaces healthy and vibrant.
An additional (obvious) change to our organization was my joining Tree Trust as the new CEO. I came to Tree Trust in August after a lengthy career at American Express and Ameriprise Financial, fulfilling my long-held goal to lead a nonprofit organization. While I would have preferred to join Tree Trust under different circumstances, I am thrilled to be here – Tree Trust adds real value to our community, and I am excited about our future.
Thanks to each of you for your support – it is your confidence that allows us to positively impact so many people and communities. I invite you to visit our website to learn how you can personally get more involved.
Susan Gethin Chief Executive Officer
It was the summer of 1978, and Dave Hawes was an excited young forester starting his first day with Tree Trust. The pay wasn’t great and the work was harder than he thought – his crew sometimes spent more time complaining than working, and just when he thought a project was on schedule something would happen to throw a wrench in his plan.
But Dave was happy doing two things he loved - making the Twin Cities a little greener and helping people make their lives a little better. And for the next 32 years Dave did just that.
In his time with us Dave led youth crews, managed our operations and created our for-profit venture, Landscape Services, in order to sustain Tree Trust in the future. In 2006, Dave became our CEO. By blending his respect for our history with his passion for new ideas, we continued to thrive. Within a year, Landscape Services grew and Dave launched another initiative, Green Futures, paving the way for us to have an even greater impact on the Twin Cities.
Over the years Dave could have explored other jobs that might have provided a more consistent schedule or more notoriety. But, he was one of those rare people who actually loved going to work each day; he loved going to Tree Trust.
In 2010, our dear friend passed away after a brave battle with cancer. While Dave’s formal education was in forestry, we will remember him for his heart and passion for people. We are forever grateful for what he’s done for Tree Trust and the community.
Remembering Dave Hawes
Transforming Lives and Landscapes
“Dave left a legacy; he’ll be a continuing inspiration to all of us.”
- G. Rolf Svendsen, Co-Founder and Board Chair
In 1976, we began reforesting the Twin Cities after the devastating loss of trees from Dutch elm disease. With the recent arrival of emerald ash borer, our work is far from over. As this tree-destroying beetle spreads across the metro, we are once again faced with the potential destruction of our urban tree canopy.
In 2010, we empowered 2,653 students, teachers and citizens to take an active role in improving the local environment and showed them that they can make a difference. These environmental advocates volunteered 1,553 hours and made lasting improvements throughout the Twin Cities. The outdoor classrooms they created transformed school grounds into living laboratories for environmental learning. And the 2,319 trees and shrubs they added to the metro gave us oxygen to breathe, created homes for wildlife and made our communities green and beautiful.
2010 programs:
• Environmental Education: Workshops for youth and adults, Learning with Trees school program for students and teachers.• Community Tree Plantings: Volunteer-powered events in Twin Cities parks, nature areas and neighborhoods.• Municipal Tree Distributions: Partnerships with cities that provide free or low-cost trees to businesses and homeowners.

Transforming Lives and Landscapes
I volunteer to plant trees. I meet new people and I make a difference in my community.”
- Kristine P., Volunteer
In 1976, we started putting unemployed youth and adults to work on environmental improvement projects throughout the metro. In 2010, we were reminded of how relevant we still are – people are having a hard time finding work, and many don’t have the skills needed to land a job when one does become available.
In 2010, we helped 2,295 disadvantaged people build confidence, further their education and re-shape their lives. Through their involvement with us they left a legacy throughout the Twin Cities. The houses they built made home ownership possible for many low-income families. The skills they developed gave local businesses an experienced and competent workforce. And the boardwalks they built and trails they maintained beautified our parks while making them safer and more accessible.
2010 programs:
• Community Support Program: Year-round job placement for ages 18 and older.• Young Adult Conservation Corps: Year-round job training for ages 17 to 21.• YouthBuild: School-year job training for ages 17 to 21.• Youth Conservation Corps: Summer job training for ages 14 to 21.• Youth Development Services: School-year case management for ages 14 to 21.
Employment Training and Case Management
Transforming Lives and Landscapes
“They gave me training and a job, and now I’m making plans for my future.”
- Sam M., Program Participant
On September 17, 2010, more than 600 Meadowbrook Elementary School students who participated in our Learning with Trees program added 125 trees, shrubs and bulbs to their schools’ grounds. Planting alongside them were 12 volunteers from CenterPoint Energy, who took a break from their busy work day to help the kids create outdoor learning areas and beautify their gardens.
CenterPoint Energy, a 17-year funder of Learning with Trees, sponsored the Golden Valley school’s participation. Students were given the chance to engage in hands-on activities and learn about their natural environment. Teachers received tools and resources to make environmental education a regular part of their curriculum. And CenterPoint Energy saw first-hand the power of blending their direct involvement with their financial support of our programs.
“Funding and volunteering makes sense; it benefits our employees and the communities we serve.”
- Jean Krause, Director of Community Relations, CenterPoint Energy
