TROPICAL STORM - A tropical cyclone with a maximum sustained surface wind speed ranging from 34 knots/39 mph to 63 knots/73 mph
HURRICANE - A tropical cyclone with a maximum sustained surface wind speed of 64 knots/74 mph or higher.
DEFINITIONS
HURRICANE WATCH - An announcement for specific areas that a hurricane condition poses a possible threat to a coastal area.
HURRICANE WARNING - A warning that sustained winds of 74 mph or higher associated with a hurricane are expected in a specified coastal area in 24 hours or less. If the hurricane’s path is erratic, the warnings may be issued only for a few hours before the beginning of hurricane conditions.
