A Message from our Pastor Happy Labor Day! Today many of us will celebrate work by taking a day off. When the first Monday of September was set aside as a holiday to call attention to labor, it had nothing to do with the end of summer, with giving everyone a break from their jobs, or an
occasion to pat ourselves on the back for all the hard work we have done. Labor Day was set aside to call attention to the rights and dignity of workers. Jesus asks us, “What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” (Mt 16:26) It is an appropriate question to consider as we focus on the role of labor in our lives and our country this holiday weekend. For most, the whole point of going to work every day is to make a profit. The goal is to gain a better job and therefore a better life. However, one may achieve great success, a large paycheck, a beautiful lake house to go to on Labor Day, and still spend the entire day returning emails or worrying about the next quarterly earnings report. Profit and gain are not everything. When they become everything, it is easy to lose sight of those that we are neglecting or taking advantage of in order to earn or achieve more for ourselves. Labor Day reminds us work is a means to an end and not an end in itself. We were created for something more than brass rings and golden parachutes. We were created to live and love according to the dignity of being a creature created in the image of God. Saint Joseph the Worker, bless all those who labor. May their work help them to gain eternal life and if they have the power, may they provide work for others that fits their rights and dignity and allows them to support their families.
A Prayer for Monday morning: O Lord, When the alarm sounds off on Monday morning, I wish for a time when I will never have to work. When I encounter difficult people at my job, I long for the day when I can be as alone as I wish. But later, I recall how work has always been part of life. Even before the Fall, Adam had to tend the garden. After the Fall, Christ himself took up a cross and worked to save others by carrying it. Lord, help me to see the dignity and purpose that work gives to all people. And when I do not like my job, help me to offer it up as a sacrifice for souls’ salvation. Remind me always that I am valued, not because of my job, But because you chose to create me, and love me still.
Amen.
