ΝAFPLIO
One of the most beautiful cities in the area of Argos and Greece in general, the town of Nafplio –
the first capital of the newly established state of Greece since 1823 until 1834- has been founded
according to the mythology by Nafplio, son of Poseidon and Danae Animonis.
Its civilization chain starts from the prehistorical era. It has taken a part at the Argonaut
Expedition and the Trojan War, while it declined during the Roman era and bent back at the
Byzantine era. Franks, Venetians, and Turks have left their print in the town. Ancient walls,
medieval castles, monuments, statues, Ottoman fountains, Venetian and neoclassical buildings-
all of them charmingly historical and at the same time architectural jewels- reserve for you a
magnificent welcome.
Starting our tour we climb the 999 steps that lead us to the Palamidi Castle which raises it’s
imposing bulk 216 meters above the city. Baring deep historic scars, it seems as if it still protects
the city with its bastions baptized in the names οf ancient war chiefs such as (Themistocles,
Achilles, Phocion, Leonidas, Epaminondas, Miltiades).
The main point of interest in Nafplio is the much photographed fortress called Bourtzi,
located on the isle of Saint Theodori. During the first years of 1860 decade, Bourtzi
was the residence of the executioners who performed the executions of the death sentenced
prisoners of Palamidi castle.
Those and many more beautiful places you will have the opportunity to meet in Nafplio.
