TIGERS, LADY TIGERSREACH OUT TO
MID-SOUTH COMMUNITIESThe men's and women's soccer programs at The University of Memphis are proud of their
continued support from the Mid-South community, therefore both teams reach out whenever theycan to give back to the people who are supportive of them.
This past year, both the women's program and the men's program were very involved incommunity relations.
The "Big Scoop" for the RonaldMcDonald House
Women's head coach Les Szabo was one of several local celebrities to take part in the "BigScoop" sundae contest. The contest which featured local television personalities, members of theMemphis Riverkings hockey team, Tiger football coach Rip Scherer and other local celebrities, was held in conjunction with the "Big Scoop" fundraiser at the MarriotT Hotel to help raisemoney for the Ronald McDonald House.
Despite his strong efforts and obvious natural talent for making sundaes, Szabo came upshort, as his Tutti Frutti surprise did not place in the top three, but the end results were severalthousand dollars raised for the Ronald McDonald House.
The Bellevue BaptistYouth Soccer Clinic
Coach Chris Bartels and several members of his team and coaching staff, held a free soccerclinic for youths of all ages at Bellevue Baptist Church.
To say that the clinic was a success may be somewhat of an understatement, as severalhundred youth players showed up for the one day clinic.
The clinic was broken down into age groups, and each group got instruction in severaldifferent areas of the game. Despite the large numbers, the participants, as well as the players andcoaches involved benefitted from the experience.
The East Memphis Soccer AssociationLady TigerYouth Soccer Clinic
Coach Les Szabo and his Lady Tiger soccer team spent a Saturday afternoon conducting acamp for nearly 400 members of the East Memphis Soccer Association. Szabo, along with hisstaff and players conducted the three hour clinic on The University of Memphis campus.
The camp was broken down into several stations and the EMSA players, as well as some ofthe coaches, took part in the instructions. Despite the Memphis heat everyone involved seemedto enjoy the day's festivities.
Following the clinic, the players and coaches stayed around and signed autographs for theclinic participants.
Tiger Soccer Players Visit LocalElementary Schools
Several Tiger soccer players visited local elementary schools, where they read and talkedwith the students. Students asked questions and some of the players demonstrated some basicskills of soccer to the students. The purpose of the school visits was to encourage the youngstudents to get an education and to stay in school.

season outlook
WITH ALL BUT ONE STARTER RETURNING FROM LASTSEASON'S SQUAD THE TIGERS ARE READY TO
CHALLENGE FOR THE CONEFERNCE USA CROWNCoach Chris Bartels knows in order to win
championships you have to get the job done on thefield, but if championships could be won on paperthe University of Memphis Tiger soccer team maybe a lock.
Bartels has all but one starter returning fromlast year's team that won five of its final six gamesand gave plenty of national powerhouses all theycould handle throughout the season.
Gone is third leading scorer Fergal Forde, butwith one of the nation's leading scorers in RogerioLima returning, the sting of Forde's departure willnot be so hard to handle.
Lima finished second in the Midwest Regionlast season with 32 points. The Belo Horizonte,Brazil native posted 11 goals and 10 assists de-spite smothering defenses.
"There is no doubt in my mind that Rogeriois one of the best players in the country," Bartelssaid. "He is so talented with the soccer ball thatpeople sometimes don't realize his skill level be-cause he does it so effortlessly."
While Lima will provide plenty of offensefor the Tigers sophomore goalkeeper Brian Coveywill once again be an iron curtain of defense in thenets.
Dur ing his freshman season, theGermantown, Tenn., native posted a 1.08 goalsagainst average which ranked him second in theMidwest Region. Covey also posted eight shutouts
Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Covey
to go along with his goals againstaverage.
"We knew we had a greatgoalkeeper when we signed Brian, but 1 am not sure we expected himto be that good that soon. He is notonly a tremendous talent, but he isa natural leader on the field."
Opponents should not befooled however, as the Tigers aremuch more than a two-man team.
Jeremy Tutor returns as theTigers second leading scorer froma year ago. Playing along sideLima on the front line. Tutor registered eight goalsand four assists for 20 points.
Joining Lima and Tutor on the front line issophomore standout Steven Brooks. As a fresh-man Brooks recorded 15 points including four goalsand seven assists.
"This could be the best scoring frontline wehave had at Memphis in quite some time. Rogerio,Jeremy and Steven all three know how to put theball in the back of the net and mix in Tommy Whiteand Nick Glaser and it becomes a pretty solid line."
The Tigers midfield will once again be aboutas solid as it could possibly be. Despite the loss ofForde from the midfield, the Tigers return seniorsRamon Aguillon, his brother Rolando and the eversteady Kurt Clemence. If that trio wasn't enoughfor opposing teams, mix in juniors Joey Lewisand Matt Briggs, as well as sophomores Eric Munozand Michael Neff, and the Tigers have a formi-dable line of midfielders. Add to the mix freshmanHanjo Steinkampf and Jason Cutter and Bartelsmay have the most talented and deepest midfieldanywhere.
"Our midfield is veiy talented and deep thisseason," Bartels said. "We have a lot of experiencecoining back, and as a coach there is not a wholelot that can replace experience on the playing field."
Defense has been an important part of theTigers success over the years under Bartels and thisyear should be no exception.
With Covey already being a solid line of de-fense in the nets, he should get plenty of help thisseason, as the Tigers return the majority of their
Sen/or forward Rogerio Lima
back line players from a year ago that recordedeight shutouts and held opposing teams to just 21goals.
Bartels returns his top four defensemen fromlast season, in seniors Chris Morris and Jason Dunn,as well as sophomore sensations PhillipThiele andJohn Hormazabal.
Dunn has become one of the conference's bestdefensive players, while Morris is returning froma knee injury that kept him out of action much oflast season.
The Canadian connection of Thiele andHormazabal showed last year that while they wereyoung they have a great understanding of the game.
"We have always prided ourselves in playingtough defense, and that is not going to change thisyear. We have our top defenders back from lastseason and I look for opponents to really have towork hard if they are going to score many goalsagainst our defense this year."
The quartet of defensemen, along with Covey, allowed just 21 goals last season and have addedsome depth in freshmen Kris Gregory and JoshJohnson.
Freshmen Robby Hagemann and JohnStoever will backup Covey in the nets this season.
"On paper this is a very impressive squad,"Bartels said, "Unfortunately you can't play the sea-son on paper. We have the opportunity to have avery special season if things go our way, but inorder for that to happen we have to line up andplay hard every time we take the field."

chris bartels As Chris Bartels enters his 10th season at thehelm of the Tiger soccer program, he has estab-lished himself as one of the top coaches in thecountry.
Under Bartels' guidance, The U of M hasaveraged 10 wins a season and has had just twolosing years. Last season after a slow start whichshowcased some heartbreaking losses to somenational powerhouses, Bartels' squad won five ofits last six games. This season with a strong re-cruiting class and the loss of just one starter,Bartels and Co. look to be one of the favorites forthe C-USA title.
Bartels' Tigers are no strangers to success.Bartels' 1992 squad posted a 14-3-2 record. The14 wins equaled the most ever by a Tiger soccerteam, and the .789 winning percentage was thebest ever for a U of M club. His teams produced 11CMC all-conference selections, including twoCMC tournament MVPs and four all-South selec-tions. But Bartels' most impressive accomplish-ments may be in the area of academics.
Bartels not only brings the best out of hisathletes on the field, but in the classroom as well. His teams have consistently been recognized byboth the University and the conference for theiracademic achievements. The Tigers placed ninemembers on the Great Midwest Conference All-Academic Team in 1993 and 11 in 1992. In 1992and 1993, The U of M recognized Bartels' Tigersas the team with the highest grade-point average.During that time, the soccer squad also had thehighest graduation rate among The U of M athleticprograms.
Bartels' eye for talent paid off in 1992, as his1990 recruiting class, his second, led the way in earning a tie withSaint Louis University as the regu-lar season co-champions of theGreat Midwest Conference. Histhird recruiting class helped leadthe Tigers to their first NCAA ap-pearance. Unsatisfied with theNCAA tournament snub in 1992,despite a 14-3-2 record, Bartelsand the Tigers rallied in the 1993GMC tournament to defeat nation-ally ranked SLU for the GMC titleand the conference's first automaticbid to the NCAA tournament.
Since Bartels arrived at The U of M in 1988,he has seen major improvements in the programand the soccer facilities. Bartels has worked withThe U of M Athletic Department, Tiger Clubs, andthe Friends of Soccer club to make major improve-ments to Echles Field, home of the Tigers. In 1992,all of the hard work paid off. Permanent seatingwas increased to 1,000 and the Tigers averagedjust under 800 fans per game. The season high wasan overflow crowd of 1,290 against Saint Louis.
A New Jersey native, Bartels attended RiverDell High School in Oradell, N.J., before signinga soccer scholarship with Bowling Green StateUniversity. During his junior year at BGSU, Bartelsworked in the public relations department for theNew York Cosmos. After graduating in 1973 witha degree in journalism and public relations, Bartelsstayed at BGSU as an assistant coach until hebecame a player/coach for the Athletes in Actionsoccer team. In 1980, Bartels returned to BGSU asan assistant coach and physical education instruc-tor while earning a Master's degree in physicaleducation.
Bartels, who has worked as general manageror coach for three professional soccer teams, ar-rived in Memphis in 1982 as an assistant coach andplayer-personnel director for the Memphis Ameri-cans of the Major Indoor Soccer League. Later, heserved as the head coach and General Manager ofthe Kalamazoo Kangaroos in the American IndoorSoccer Association.
From 1986 to 1987 Bartels was GeneralManager of the Memphis Storm.
Bartels and his wife Victoria, have threechildren: Teddy, 9; Ross, 7; and Thomas, 3.
assistant coaches
toni carbognaniToni Carbognani begins his
fourth-year as assistant soccer coachfor The University of Memphis af-ter enjoying a 17-year professionalsoccer career.
Carbognani brings to the Ti-gers knowledge about the game of soccer that can't be bought. His abilities asa player and coach have taken him around the world and back to Memphis.Carbognani made Memphis his permanent home in 1981 when he was withthe Memphis Americans of the Major Indoor Soccer League. It was therewhen he first met Tiger head coach Chris Bartels.
Bartels was the assistant coach of the Americans when Carbognani wasacquired from the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League.
Carbognani began his soccer career at age nine with the Huracan club inBuenos Aires and stayed with them until he was 20 years old when he signedhis first professional contract with Indepcndiente, a second division team inArgentina. After three years, he was traded to San Telmo, another seconddivision team. In his second year with San Telmo, his team won the champi-onship and moved to the first division where he stayed for another year untilhe was traded to Barcelona, Ecuador.
After three years in Barcelona, Carbognani signed with the Cosmos in1979. While in New York, he played with some of the greatest names in
soccer. Pclc was gone, but Frank Beckenbauer was there. Beckenbauer, aGerman, is the only man to ever play on and coach World Cup champions.Carlos Alberto, a former Brazilian World Cup team captain was alsoCarbognani's Cosmos teammate.
Carbognani played on several teams in the MISL and the National Pro-fessional Soccer League beforeclosing out his professional ca-reer in 1991 with the NPSLchampion Chicago Power.
Since he has been with theTigers, The U of M has shareda Great Midwest Conferenceregular season championshipwith 10-time national championSaint Louis University, won oneGMC tournament, and has beento the NCAA tournament .Carbognani also coaches the 15-and 16-year-olds of the Mem-phis Futbol Club that has ad-vanced to several state tourna-ments.
bobby foxA familiar face in the Mem-
phis soccer community will onceagain be roaming the sidelines thisseason as Bobby Fox joins theTiger coaching staff for his sec-
ond season.Fox, who was born in Arkansas yet raised in Mannheim, Germany,
has been a Memphis-area club coach and player for the past four years.Fox currently serves as assistant coach for Memphis Futbol Club's un-der-20 and under-19 teams, which have found great success over the pastfew years. His under-20 team first tied, then defeated the Croatian Na-tional Team in July of 1996 before making the trip to the national tourna-ment in Indianapolis.
Fox moved to Germany at a young age and learned the game ofsoccer through the Gentian club system. At the age of 13, he moved back
to Memphis to play the next six years for the Memphis Kickers underthen-assistant club coach and current Tiger assistant Toni Carbognani.During that time, he also played six years in the state Olympic Develop-ment Program, coached by none other than Chris Bartels.
Although he signed a scholarship to play for The U of M, familyfinances required that he work through school, forcing him to cancel hiscommitment to the Tigers. Fox continued as a coach and player for theKickers before moving with his new Northwest Airlines job to Minne-sota. In Minnesota, Fox stayed active in soccer, playing in the MinnesotaState Selects league and coaching at both the youth and adult levels.
Following his work in Minnesota, Fox returned to Memphis and hasfound a home with the MFC and, more recently, with his former mentors- Bartels and Carbognani - at The U of M.
Fox, 31, is married to Shelley Fox and is currently raising two fu-ture soccer players in daughters Dallas,?, and Kateland, 5.

lady tiger season outlook
WITH TWO SEASONS NOW UNDER THEIR BELTS, THELADY TIGER SOCCER TEAM HAS ITS SIGHTS SET ON
MOVING TO THE TOP OF CONFERENCE USAWith an abundance of returning talent and the
strongest recruiting class to date. Lady Tiger soc-cer coach LCS Szabo can't help but be optimisticabout the upcoming soccer season.
The Lady Tigers return their top six scorersfrom last season, as well as their top three defend-ers from a squad that came on strong toward theend of the season to post an 8-13 record.
"Toward the end of the 1996 season, westarted to gel as a unit," Szabo said. "Most of theseplayers have been together for two full seasons andthe experience factor is starting to show with theirplay on the field."
After a slow start last season, Szabo's LadyTiger picked up momentum as they won three oftheir final four games. That momentum is whatSzabo hopes they carry into the upcoming 1997season.
"We were really playing well at season's endlast year." the third-year coach said. "With the tal-ent we have retiming to this year's squad and theskill level of our newcomers, the opportunity tocompete for a possible conference title is there, wejust have to play hard for 90 minutes and make themost of our chances."
Senior defender Shelley Heinz returns to an-chor the 1997 version of the Lady Tigers. Last sea-son Heinz earned first-team all-conference honorsfrom her sweeper position.
"Shelley is a remarkable player," Szabo said."She is the backbone of our defense and her skills
Jennifer Vossen returns as the Lady Tigersleading scorer from last season
allow her to do so many differentthings that help our team. I lookfor Shelley to be one of the topplayers in Conference USA thisseason."
Heinz will be joined on theback l ine by j u n i o r RobinWaddell. Waddell was a keyplayer on the Lady Tigers defen-sive unit a year ago. The Knox-vil le, Tenn.. native started andplayed in all 21 games for Szabo.
Seniors Kara Murphy andLesley Zmiirchiik also return to the backline thisseason. Murphy, a high school teammate of Heinz, suffered through an injury plagued season last year, but looks to be 100 percent and ready for the 1997season, while Zmurchuk also returns from a ham-string injury which limited her for much of the 1996season.
The Lady Tigers defensive depth docs not endthere. Szabo will have the luxury of three experi-enced goalkeepers this season.
Junior Francis Cnrrin had her best seasonas a Lady Tiger last season. She posted a 2.94 goalsagainst average in 13 starts.
Sophomore Heather Chinellato also returnsthis season. Chinellato split time between goal-keeper and midfielder. While in the nets Chinellatoposted a 1.94 goals against average in 11 games.
After sitting out last season with a medicalred-shirt, Slierri Stamper returns to the Lady Ti-ger squad. Stamper will provide experience for theLady Tigers at the goalkeeper position.
The Lady Tigers also have experience return-ing at the midfield position. Second-team all-con-ference performer Jennifer Vossen returns afterleading the Memphis with 28 points last season.Vossen had a break through season, as she posted10 goals and eight assists a year ago.
"Jen had the type of season last year that ourcoaching staff knew she was capable of having,"Szabo said. "She is such a versatile player andshowed last season that she is a playmakcr."
Another playmaker that returns to the midfieldis Chrsity Caswell. Caswell led the Lady Tigerswith 12 assists last season, and showed she not onlycould set up goals but her eight goals showed she
Two-time all-conference performer Shelley Heinz
could finish as well.LuVonne Hill is another veteran player that
will provide the Lady Tigers with experience inthe middle.
While the Lady Tigers look strong at defenderand midfield, the Memphis frontline may be thestrongest. Junior Jodi Fisher and sophomoreMeredith Smith combined for 19 goals and 13 as-sists last season, numbers they hope to improve onthis season.
Fisher is the all-time leading scorer in the briefhistory of the Lady Tiger program, and looks toadd to her career numbers in a big way this season.
"Jodi has been a rock solid player for us thepast two seasons," Szabo said. "She is a tremen-dous athlete that has fought through numerousdouble teams to score for us."
With the emergence of Meredith Smith, Fishermay not see those double teams this season. Smithearned Conference USA all-Freshman honors asshe led the Lady Tigers with 11 goals last season.
"Meredith had a great freshman season, andwe look for her to only get better. Meredith andJodi up front will give us a very good one-twopunch," Szabo said.
Add in a talented recruiting class that featuresmidfielders Nicole Bates-Earner, Tori Winslett andErin Dodd, along with defender Lisa Gnaster, aswell as a talented group of walk-ons and coach LcsSzabo's optimism can easily be understood.
"Nobody knows what is in order for this sea-son, but I really believe with the talent on this year'steam, we have the chance to win a lot of games,"Szabo said. "I know as a coaching staff we are look-ing forward to the 1997 season."

To say Les Szabo has the Lady Tiger soccerprogram headed in the right direction may be anunderstatement.
Szabo has been the mastermind behind ayoung program that has been able to recruit qual-ity talent and develop a solid foundation to buildon.
Me has surrounded himself with young buttalented players, and Szabo's coaching prowesscould be seen as the team has improved with eachgame during the program's first two seasons.
Nobody expected the the Lady Tigers to beas competitive as they have been in their first twoseasons, nobody except Szabo.
During the program's inaugural season in1995, Szabo led the Lady Tigers to five victories, and last year the improvement continued as hissquad posted an 8-13 record, despite some heart-breaking losses early in the season.
During the off-season, Szabo once again hitthe recruiting trail and has compiled what he thinksis his deepest team talent wise to date.
When it comes to coaching in the collegiateranks. Szabo has plenty of experience. He hascoached several collegiate ail-Americans, includ-ing, most recently, UCLA standout Brad Freidel, who was a member of the 1994 US World Cupteam. Szabo has been involved with coaching soc-cer at various levels since 1980.
In 1994, as a volunteer assistant for Tiger headcoach Chris Bartels, Szabo worked with the Tigergoalkeepers. He also assisted Bartels in recruitingfor the upcoming season.
During the 1993-94 season, Szabo worked asthe restricted earnings coach at Eastern Illinois Uni-versity. While at LIU, he completed his Master'sdegree in sports management.
From 1989-92, Szabo was head coach ofwomen's soccer at John Carroll University in Uni-versity Heights, Ohio. In just four short seasons,he took the JCU team from a new program to asecond-place finish in the Ohio Athletic Confer-ence. Szabo's career record at John Carroll was 25-35-1.
From 1981-91, Szabo served as the directorof coaching for the East-West Soccer Club of Ohio. From 1985-1987, he led the under-19 boys' teams
to three consecutive final four appearances in theMcGuire Cup National Championship Tournament. In 1990, his under-19 boys' team finished secondin the Dallas Cup and his under-23 men's teamplaced second in the professional division of theHarlem Cup in Holland.
Szabo has also worked as the director ofcoaching for the East-West Ambassadors (1988-1994). This sports tour, marketing and promotionsbusiness is responsible for allowing American soc-cer players to compete in more than 15 countrieson 10 different tours. In 1980-81, Szabo workedas the facility manager and community liaison di-rector for the Cleveland Force, a professional in-door soccer club.
Szabo has also been active in Memphis youthsoccer, coaching several of the area youth teams.
Head coach Les Szabo has quickly molded theLady Tiger soccer team into a contender in Con-ference USA

LADY TIGER ASSISTANTpair? kalinoskiPam Kalinoski joined The Uni-
versity of Memphis women's soccerstaff as one of the most decoratedwomen in NCAA soccer history.
But the road to the top forKalinoski started at the bottom - as a
walk-on. Kalinoski is again accepting a great challenge in helping build the LadyTiger soccer program.
The native of North Olmsted, Ohio was named a high school all-Americanher senior year in 1986. At the same time, Kalinoski played for the East-West Soc-cer Club of Ohio under current U of M women's head coach Les Szabo.
Upon completion of her senior season, Kalinoski hoped to receive a scholar-ship from perennial soccer powerhouse North Carolina. Although the scholarshipoffer never came Kalinoski still chose to walk on to the Lady Tarheel squad.
Kalinoski met the challenge by helping the Lady Tarheels to four undefeatedseasons and four consecutive NCAA titles from 1987-1991. During that time,Kalinoski made a name for herself in the soccer community by earning a startingposition in the North Carolina midfield and capturing Offensive Most ValuablePlayer honors at the 1991 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship Tournament.
As captain of the Lady Tarheels her senior season, Kalinoski set a perfectexample for players to come by finishing her campaign as the NCAA's career as-sists leader. Her record was broken two years later by a fellow teammate Mia Hamm.
However, her name remains in the UNC record book in several categories.
She is first in consecutive matches with an assist (12 matches between 10/13/91 to11/24/91), second in careerassists with 51 and second inmost assists in a season with28 assists in 1991.
Kalinoski also led theteam off the field, where shewas named to the AtlanticCoast Conference AcademicHonor Roll, the UNC Dean'sList and the NCAA Fresh-man All-America team.
Kalinoski joined TheU of M staff after spendingthree years working in pub-lic relations in Sacramento,Calif. During what sparetime she has, Kalinoski is ac-tively involved in coachingMemphis-area youth teamsand also provides special-ized skill instruction at the annual U of M youth soccer camps.
Kalinoski and Szabo have turned a friend-ship into a successful coaching tandem.
LADY TIGER ASSISTANTbrooks monaghanAfter a brilliant three-year play-
ing career at The University of Mem-phis, Brooks Monaghan begins histhird season as an assistnt coach forthe Lady Tigers.
Monaghan will be a vital part ofcoach Les Szabo's staff as he will help groom the Lady Tigers' goalkeepers for theupcoming season. Monaghan split time last season with the men's and women'steam, and will again be called upon to assist both programs' goalkeepers.
Monaghan was a three-year starter for the Tigers after transferring from theUniversity of Evansville following his freshman season. Monaghan, who was aprep standout for Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, returned to his home-town to become an immediate impact on The U of M program.
Monaghan led the Tigers to their best season ever in 1992 as his stingygoaltending helped Memphis compile a school-best 14-3-2 record and claim the co-championship of the Great Midwest Conference. Of the 14 wins the Tigers posted
in 1992,11 of those were shutouts by Monaghan. In fact, his 11 shutouts in 1992were the most ever in a season by a Tiger goalkeeper. Monaghan finished the 1992season with a goals against average of 0.80.
Monaghan's success didn't end there. In 1993, after a disappointing regularseason, Monaghan switched into high gear for the Great Midwest Conference Tour-nament, leading the Tigers to the CMC crown and the team's first ever berth in theNCAA tournament.
Since that time, he has continued to play at the club and semiprofessionallevel, most recently with the New Orleans Gamblers of the USISL.
Monaghan's success on the soccer field began during his prep playing days atChristian Brothers High School. Christian Brothers won two Tennessee state cham-pionships during his career with the Purple Wave.
Monaghan received the highest honor that a prep player can receive when hewas named a high school all-American after the 1991 season. Monaghan was alsoa two-time all-state performer for David Deitrich at CBHS.

The University of Memphis' roots date backto 1912, when radio was young, motion pictureswere silent and William Howard Taft was in theWhite House. Named West Tennessee StateNormal School, the institution's main purposewas to train and educate secondary-school teach-ers.
Answering the need for a comprehensiveschool in the Mid-South, WTSNS expanded itscurriculum. In 1941, the school's name changedto Memphis State College and in 1957, thecollege received university status and becameMemphis State University. On July 1,1994, thename was changed to The University of Mem-phis. The U of M now has more than 20,000students and a physical plant comprising 1,160acres on seven different sites.
The main campus lies in the center of asprawling metropolis and combines the conve-nience of a large city with the atmosphere of aresidential neighborhood. South Campus, whichwas once a veteran's hospital, is home to theBilly J. Murphy Sports Complex and studentfamily housing. Students and faculty memberscan conduct environmental research at the Ed-ward J. Meeman Biological Field Station, which

tiger traditions
why tigers? When the University of Memphis first
fielded a football team in the fall of 1912, noone had selected a nickname for the squad.
Early references to the football team, tabbed them only as the Blue and Gray War-riors of West Tennessee Normal School.
After the final game of the 1914 season, there was a student parade. During this event, several Normal students shouted, "We fight likeTigers". The nickname was born.
More and more the nickname "Tigers" wasused, particularly in campus publications. Butit did not catch on with the newspapers down-town. They continued to use "Normals" or the"Blue and Gray" when referring to the Univer-sity.
Under coach Lester Barnard in 1922,Normal's football team gave a ring of truth tothat old student yell about Tigers. The teamadopted a motto - "Every Man A Tiger" and wenton to score 174 points while allowing their op-ponents just 29 points.
In the late 1920s, student publications anddowntown newspapers began referring to thefootball team as the "Teachers" or "Tutors". TheTiger nickname would return. But not until 1939was it finally adopted as the official nicknamefor the University of Memphis.

The story of how the first Tiger cub ar-rived in Memphis is quite interesting. On No-vember 9, 1972, the baby tiger was placed in adog kennel in Michigan City, IN, and flown toChicago's O'Hare International Airport. Thereit was placed aboard a Delta flight and arrivedin Memphis at 3:00 AM. C. Cleveland Drennon,
