Mornington lies just behind Brooklyn. Brooklyn was established in 1852 by John Fitchett senior as a dairy farm and given the name “Fitchett.” In 1988 Brooklyn adjoined Fitchett and was extended up the Brooklyn hill by Alfred Miles. After Brooklyn Road was cut through the town belt by Central Park, its development increased rapidly. An electric tramway was introduced in 1906.
It is named after a borough in New York City, which in turn is named after the Dutch city Breukelen. A number of streets are names after former US Presidents: Cleveland Street after Grover Cleveland, Coolidge Street after Calvin Coolidge and Washington Street after George Washington to name but a few.
Today Brooklyn has a friendly and vibrant atmosphere with many young families living in it – but also retains its identity as an older suburb with timber villas and varied architecture. It is located just 3km above the CBD on the eastern hills above Happy Valley and offers great views to the city, harbour and airport. It is a very popular suburb due to its proximity to the city and the services and amenities it offers. It even has its own street festival in late November, which epitomises the community spirit in the suburb!
Mornington,
Mornington just south of Brooklyn is named after the Duke of Wellington’s father, the Earl of Mornington. Ohiro and Mills Rd (that turns into Washington Street) roads that provide easy access in and out of Mornington – and to the city and neighbouring suburbs of Vogeltown, Kingston, Beramphore and Brooklyn.
Central Park
Brooklyn is separated from the city by Central Park, named after the park of the same name in New York. The park was established in 1913. There are a set of wrought iron gates as the main entrance that were presented to then Mayor, John Pearce Luke in 1920.
During the war between 1942 and 1944 an American military camp was established in the park. By 1943 the camp could accommodate 540 personnel.
Elliot ParkElliot Park is located at the western side of Brooklyn, adjacent to Mitchell and Karepa Streets. The park has a children’s playground.
Wind TurbineThe Brooklyn Wind Turbine was installed on Pol Hill above Brooklyn in March 1993 as part of a research project into wind power generation by the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand. The site was chosen due to Wellington’s “higher than normal” wind patterns. The site, 299 meters above sea level, provides spectacular panoramas of the city, Cook Straight and the upper South Island. It is the oldest operating wind turbine in New Zealand.
Hawkins HillHawkins Hill is another of Brooklyn’s peaks and is a landmark due to the prominent radar station used for aircraft flight control and associated communications.
Bike TracksThere are a number of great bike tracks around Brooklyn including the track to Brooklyn windmill and on Hawkins Hill.
Entertainment and RestaurantsBrooklyn is home to Penthouse Cinema, located on Ohiro Road just south of Cleveland Street. It was constructed for the Ranish family in the art deco style, and opened on 15 June 1939 as the Vogue Theatre. The Ranish family ran the theatre until 1951. Today it is a popular and thriving theatre and casual restaurant and bar. There are also a number of popular restaurants in Brooklyn including The Golden Lotus and The Cornerstone as well as several takeaway bars.
LibraryBrooklyn has its own branch library which opened in 1905 in Harrison Street. Its entrance is now in Cleveland Street. The original building is now the Brooklyn Playcentre.
Renouf Tennis CentreThe Renouf Centre is located on Brooklyn Road and is home to a number regular international events including Davis Cup and Fed Cup. The Centre is also available for everyone and anyone to use.

Steve Fejos
Born in Wellington and educated at St Patrick’s College
and Victoria University in Wellington Steve entered real
estate in August 1993, having come from a background
in property management. In January 1996 Steve was
appointed Sales Manager for Challenge Realty’s Oriental
Bay Office. Within 18 months Steve took the office into
the top 10 in the Challenge Realty Group. Steve went on
to purchase three Wellington offices in October 1997.
Over the next seven years Steve was instrumental in
growing the company from a sales team of 12 to a team
of 68 sales people with 4,000 house sales worth over
1.5 billion dollars!
Shortly after Steve sold the business he was approached
by Ray White Australia and asked to restructure their
international business model so as to increase their
competitiveness with RE/MAX. At the time over 300
sales people, in Queensland alone, had left Ray White to
join RE/MAX. In the next few years Steve played a huge
part in turning around the fortunes of Ray White and
increasing the number of sales people by over 40%.
Steve returned to New Zealand in November 2005 and
took up the role of Director of Operations for RE/MAX
New Zealand. The role was to assist broker owners and
top sales people at new and established RE/MAX offices
to implement their business plans and maintain the
momentum of the fastest growing real estate company
- the RE/MAX brand, in New Zealand and Australia.
In 2006 Steve attended a wide range of leading
international industry training seminars in Denver,
Chicago and Brisbane.
After more than 400 flights during his 3 years in his
corporate career Steve decided to resign and return
to what he loves doing most - selling real estate in
Wellington.
Steve’s extensive experience in real estate spanning
local, national and international markets is a huge
benefit to his clients. This and his innovative and unique
marketing techniques is Setting a New BENCHMARQUE
in Wellington Real Estate.
Awards received
Under the LJ Hooker brand Steve was twice winner of
the National Franchise Owner of the Year Award 2000
and 2002.
Most Productive Team Award in 2001.
National Communications Award 2002.
Top 10 International Office for Gross Commission. 1999:
8th place, 2000: 5th place, 2001: 8th place, 2002: 7th
place, 2003: 10th place.
Testimonial
Gary Ahearn, Regional Director of RE/MAX Australasia
says, “Steve brings together a vast experience and
understanding of all facets of real estate. Having been
very successful in sales in the mid 1990’s Steve really
made his mark on real estate by establishing a very
credible and strong company under the L.J.Hooker
brand. The standards he set are still the standards some
offices are striving to attain to. However it is Steve’s
ability to relate to all people in the community which is
his outstanding strength.”
