The 1982 Rock Awards were magic!!!
Appearances by the 23rd Street MarchingCobras, Don Pardo of Saturday Night Live, SteveWalsh, Missouri, Morningstar, Triumph, Stan Plesser,Shooting Star, Max Floyd, Lee Abrams, Derek Sutton, the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Frankie Hutchisonand, of course, Quarterflash made the Februaryevening the highlight of the year.
The real stars, however, of the event were thepeople who voted and attended last year's banquet.
1982 was a tough year for the record industry. It was, however, a year of innovation and breakoutsby some terrific new groups and splendid albums byestablished stars. New technological breakthroughslooming on the horizon for the record industry, plusnew forms of rock communication, and early signs ofa national economic recovery signal what potentiallycould be a banner year for rock and roll.
The 1983 Rock Awards represent a commit-ment by our staff to recreate the passion of the 1982awards celebration. 100,000 ballots have been castand tabulated, the stage and tables have been set,the video monitors are in place, the stars are here, most importantly you're here, so let us begin, withthe help of our friends from Labatts Beer and enjoyour little celebration of life, music, and emotion -the 1983 Kansas City Rock Awards.

Hey, what's going on with all the new rock?Good question. And I'll put it in print - I'm not sure... totally, but I do know something's happening.Something big.
1982 was an intriguing year for music. It's tooearly to clearly realize what lasting impact the musicreleased in '82 will have on us but it's obvious a verydefinite change is occurring. Suddenly new bandswith new sounds are emerging. Before '82 not manypeople had heard of Saga, Men At Work, A Flock ofSeagulls, The Fix, Stray Cats, Missing Persons, AldoNova, Joan Jett and numerous other fresh excitingbands. Other artists like the Clash and Joe Jacksontook giant strides toward mass acceptance in rock &roll. Def Leppard is becoming odds on favorites torule heavy metal. What's going on? Maybe a changeof the guard?
Perhaps all this new rock emerging is a result offewer than normal "superstar" releases. '82 had it'ssuperstar moments with The Who, Pat Benatar, VanHalen, Billy Squier, Supertramp and Rush amongothers. But I think the reason goes beyond that. Toomany new elements have risen that are creating aperiod of intense growth in new rock; newsounds, rapid technological developments, socialand economic values and a host of other factors aredictating change.
You must admit that when rock & roll veterans who are supposedly locked into one soundsuddenly join together to form Asia and release an album so creative it captures the country ...something must be going on. Asia didn't re -hash music of the '70's as their past would lead us tobelieve. Instead they progressed to something new ... something in sync with the '80's. Other bandssuch as Rush and John Cougar are applauded for moving forward and searching for that newelement instead of playing it safe and releasing new albums that simply sound like the old albums.
Where new rock is going from here I'm not sure ... musicians far more talented than I willdecide that, but I can only feel that this year will be even richer than last. And as a radio station wewant to be a part of it. KY/102 reflects Kansas City's thirst for new rock. As times and preferenceschange, so must KY/102. And if we ever fail, let us know. We listen. After all, you decide what'shappening, not us.
Please don't get me wrong. I'm not abandoning the artists who carved their niche in rock history.I lived and loved the '60's and '70's but it's time for the '80's. To me that is the spirit of the RockAwards. Tonight we have a chance to look back at the music that made 1982, but we also have thechance to look forward to 1983. If for some reason we lose the feeling for music, especially new rock, then we stop growing. The Rock Awards is just one way of committing to that feeling. Our city hasthat rock & roll spirit ... let's not ever let it go. Keep rockin' Kansas City.
