AN autonomous flying am-bulance has successfullycompleted its first solotest flight, offering a po-

tential solution for challeng-ing search and rescuemissions.

Completing such missionsin rough terrain or combat zones can be tricky, with heli-copters currently offering thebest transportation option in most cases.

However, these vehicles need clear areas to land, and in the case of war zones, heli-copters tend to attract enemy fire. Now an Israeli company has completed the test flight for an automated flying vehi-cle, dubbed the Cormorant, that could one day go wherehelicopters cannot.

Last month, the company flew the Cormorant on the craft’s first solo flight over real terrain. The vehicle is de-signed to eventually carry peo-ple or equipment without a human pilot on board, ‘LiveScience’ reported.

Rather than using propel-lers or rotors to fly, the Cormo-rant uses ducted fans that areeffectively shielded rotors, which means the aircraft does not need to worry about bump-ing into a wall and damaging the rotors.

Another set of fans propelsthe vehicle forward. The vehi-cle is effectively a decision-making system that can figure out what to do if there is a problem in the inputs from thesensors, the company, UrbanAeronautics, said.

If the Cormorant detects a potential issue, the drone’s ro-botic brain can decide wheth-er to go home, land and wait for more instructions, or try a different flight path. — PTI

What is a paradigm shift?A PARADIGM shift is when asignificant change happens, usually from one fundamental view to a different view. In most cases, some type of ma-jor discontinuity occurs aswell. Thomas Kuhn wrote about Paradigm Shift duringthe early 1960s, and explainedhow a “series of peaceful in-terludes punctuated by intel-lectually violent revolutions”caused “one conceptual world view to be replaced by anotherview.” In laymen terms, para-digm shift is a popular, or per-haps, not so popular shift or transformation of the way we Humans perceive events, peo-ple, environment, and life alto-gether. It can be a national or international shift, and couldhave dramatic effects – wheth-er positive or negative – on the way we live our lives today and in the future.

In today’s society, we’ve all witnessed a major shift al-ready. When we look backupon counterculture’, we tracesome of the origins to the defi-nition of ‘Paradigm shift.’During the counterculture era (1960s-1970s), younger genera-tions opposed authority andwere very much at odds withsociety’s accepted belief sys-tems and standards of living. In the counterculture move-ment (fueled by the VietnamWar), social conservatives were deemed ‘social repres-sionists.’ The enlighteningparadigm shift exploded into innovative ideas about reli-gion, society and spirituality, notwithstanding traditionalWestern ideologies. In today’ssociety, we see a shift toward a more blinded-oppresionisticview.
