TIPS
1Before you get involved in your
first project, be sure to write
down the name of the interviewer,
interviewee, time, date and the
location where it took place.
2
Make sure that your headphones, sitting
chair and foot pedals are comfortable.
3Since audio formats need
to be played and replayed
to get exact information,
it is worthwhile to use
foot pedals. It allows you
to start and stop audio
playback with your foot.
Play a small section at a
time and type as you hear
them. Repeat the tape as
and when required.
4
One has to pay close attention while transcribing.
Sometimes, few words are hard to capture because
of the difficult audio: there, you read the whole
paragraph to include paraphrasing statements to
convey the general idea of what is being said.
Always highlight those words to show that it is
your text, not from the original sources.
Insert a paragraph or space between both
speakers whenever any person is speaking.
5
6
After completing the initial draft, listen to
the tape again and read out the text at the
same time. Make the corrections wherever
necessary.
7Start identification
and correction of
spelling, formatting,
typos, and the essence
of content as per the
audience's culture,
language and
demographics. Spell
out abbreviations and
clear all punctuations.
Try to avoid
excessive use of
verbal tics like “I
mean”, “you know”
etc. You can also
edit ‘um’, ‘uh’ like
fillers, which is a
distraction while
delivering the
message of the total
interview.
8
For referencing purposes, save each stage of
the transcribed interview in a separate file.
9
Spell-check one last time. Now, your transcript
is READY TO GO.
10
Transcribing interviews accurately needs a diligentapproach. However, it's perfectly attainable for anyonewho has proficiency in language and grammar, along
with other requisite transcription skills.
