Lisbon Exempted Village School District
A warm winter welcome to all, as we begin another
issue of the District Newsletter. Hard to believe we
are at the halfway point of the school year already,
and hopefully much of the worst winter weather is
behind us. By now you should have been receiving
calls on days in which we have adjusted or closed
school due to the weather. If you have not been re-
ceiving or have had problems please contact the
school offices for assistance. This month there are
two items for my article, the first being the new
state requirement for reporting Body Mass Index
(BMI) information to the state. You should have
received information regarding this program from
the school in which your child attends and once
again if you have any questions please contact the
school. Our school nurse, Kella Haren has an article
with more details later in the newsletter.
My second item deals with our Board of Education.
January is School Board Recognition Month and we
have been celebrating School Board recognition in
order to build awareness and understanding of the
vital function an elected board of education plays in
our society. Our district is joining with other dis-
tricts throughout the state to recognize the important
contributions school board members make to their
communities. These people unselfishly contribute
their time and talents toward the advancement of
public education. They represent a continuing com-
mitment to local citizen control and decision-
making in education. Even though we are making a
special effort during January to show appreciation
to our school board members, we recognize their
contributions reflect a year-round commitment on
Superintendent’s Script
their part. They are dedicated individuals who are
committed to the continuing success of our schools
and students.
I would like to recognize the following men who
are serving the Lisbon School District and their
years of service:
Jim Smith, Board President - 11 years, 2000-2010
Chick Ashton, Vice President -7 years, 2004-2010
Gene Gallo - 13 years, 1998-2010
Jeff Elliott - 5 years, 2002-2006 and 2009 - 2010
Gary Peruchetti -15 years, 1996-2010
If you should happen to see any of these folks
please take an opportunity to say thanks for all they
do for the children of the District.
Yours in Education,
Don

ART CLUB AT FALLING WATERS
Otto’s Observation Deck
at McKinley A Message from the Principal! All of our students are working hard at McKinley
Elementary School. It is amazing how fast the year
is going by. We continue to work daily on prepar-
ing your child for the next grade level and the OAA
in the Spring. Students are reminded to continue to
be prepared for all classes for the remaining school
days. On February 7th, we will be celebrating our
100th day of school! The children will enjoy class-
room activities to celebrate this accomplishment. I
want to take this time to thank you, the parent, for your support in your child’s education. You are
such an important part of your child’s educational
experience. Please call the office at any time if we
can assist you. Together, the school, student, and
parent make a winning McKinley team!
Dress Warm!
Even though winter is upon us, the students like to
go outside for recess when possible. Please make
sure you dress your child appropriately for the
colder weather so your child can enjoy the season.
Olweus Makes Lisbon Schools A “No Bully”
Zone
The McKinley School family is continuing our ef-
forts to stop bullying. On January 28th, we will
have a school wide assembly to remind students to
“Be Cool, Don’t Be Cruel.” Students will be enter-
tained by classroom skits, songs, and we will name
our mascot for the program which is a penguin.
Our McKinley rules that are read each morning on
the announcements are:
We will not bully others.
We will try to help students who are bullied.
We will make it a point to include students who
are easily left out.
When we know somebody is being bullied, we
will immediately tell an adult at school and an
adult at home.
Important Dates to Remember:
Testing:
Iowa and CogAT testing will take place from Janu-
ary 24th – 28th and January 31st – February 4th each
morning for the second and fifth grades. Remem-
ber good health equals good test scores. Please
have your child eat a nutritious breakfast each
morning. Get at least nine to ten hours of sleep each night. Encourage your child to exercise each day.
Exercise increases oxygen to the brain and helps
with thinking and memory.

We are exploring a variety of science concepts
through our guided reading including: solids, liq-
uids, and gases and hibernation, migration, and ad-
aptation. Included in our guided reading, we are
learning about compound words, such as
“snowman” and “snowball.” We are completing a
month long science unit on penguins and how their bodies are meant to survive in the cold Antarctic
climate. Also, in social studies, we have spent time
learning about the Inuit culture of the Arctic Cir-
cle. We explored how they survive, what animals

Haren’s Hotline
For Lisbon Schools Healthy Choices for Healthy Children Act, or Ohio
Senate Bill 210, became law on June 18, 2010. This law is taking steps to reduce childhood obesity by
increasing student’s physical activity and promoting
healthy meals and beverages at schools. One of the
law’s requirements starting with the 2010-11 school
year is for schools to begin conducting BMI screen-
ings yearly in grades Kindergarten, 3rd, 5th, and 9th.
Each school will send its summary to the Ohio De-
partment of Health. These summaries will not show
results for any individual child. This will provide
ODH with accurate information to help plan its pub-
live there, and how their culture is different from
ours. Lastly, in mathematics, the students have
spent a few weeks gathering data and creating vis-
ual representations of that data, including: bar
graphs, t-charts, and pictographs.
Fourth Grade Fun Night
Fourth Grade students are currently reading the
book, Little House in the Big Woods, by Laura In-
galls Wilder and recently attended a family fun
night with the theme of “Pioneer Days”. During this
fun filled evening, students were treated to a story-
telling session, created pioneer crafts, and received
a free book. The parents also participated in an in-
formation session about the Accelerated Reader
program. It was a great evening!
Fifth Grade Projects
5th grade students worked on a project in which they stated a business. They thought of a product
they would like to manufacture, sold stock to the
teachers to fund their business, manufactured the
product, then sold them during homeroom to
the other students at McKinley. The students made a
$260 profit which was donated to Miss Garrod. 5th grade Math students recently held a contest to
see which class practiced the most on Math Facts in

lic health and prevention programs.
BMI stands for Body Mass Index and is calculated
from your child’s height and weight. BMI screening is a way of checking to see if your child has a
healthy weight. Measurements will be taken in the
nurse’s office privately and confidentiality will be
maintained. This is a screening and not a diagnosis.
Parents will be notified of their child’s results and
referred to discuss with their physician if necessary.
You may opt out of the BMI screening by sending a
signed letter indicating that you do not wish to have
your child participate by February 1, 2011. If you
have any questions, please call Mrs. Kella Haren,
School Nurse at either building: DAHS 424-3215
EXT. 3008 or McKinley 424-9869.

QUILTING: Mrs. Whitmore’s consumer economics class has been quilting over the last few weeks.
Their art quilts are popular for their aesthetic and artistic qualities rather than for functionality; however,
they can be used for traditional purposes. Students in the classes are encouraged to design a quilt that is
reflective of something in their lives. Heather Vaughn is shown with her creation.
