Caring and Knowledgeable Adults
“Instruction at Continuation High Schools is based on the principle that developing positive relationships with caring and knowledgeable adults that students can interact with on a daily basis is critical to their success. Students need to learn the skills, knowledge and habits of mind that are essential to take responsibility for and control over their own education.”*

• California established a law in 1919 to mandate Continuation Education.
• Designed for those students not successfully meeting the goals and programs of the traditional high school.
• Designed to accommodate students who were working full or part time to support families, for those who had responsibilities at home that precluded full time attendance in high school, and for those who had already dropped out and who wanted to return to school.
• California law was revised in 1965 to broaden the scope of continuation high schools to serve as the primary dropout and retention program for teens in the state.
• There are over 600 Continuation High Schools in California.• 100,000 students are served every year.• LAUSD has forty Continuation High Schools, seven in District 2
which provide a small campus setting, low student-teacher ratio, individualized instruction, and extensive counseling to strengthen positive self-concepts.
