GOING TO GATS
16 www.hiringtruckdrivers.com August ‘15
by John Burleson
GATS Recruiting Pavilion
joins drivers to jobsIf you’re a commercial driver, you are in a
great position to fi nd a new job. The driver shortage is in full swing, federal regulations are affecting driver turnover, and there is a demand for increased freight volume from fl eets. All of this is working to build a per-fect storm for you, the driver.
This same perfect storm can lead to a lot of added stress. You have to deal with dis-patchers pushing you to work harder, ag-gravated and (potentially) angry customers, and maybe even miss a little home time with the fam-ily. It can add a lot of stress to an already stressful job.
The Great American Trucking Show is dedicated to giving you the resources you want and need for a happy and healthy life. To help improve your career health (alongside your physical health), we have drastically expanded the driver recruiting pavilion to provide additional resources for you. You can fi nd a job that fi ts your career needs.
We want to help you fi nd your dream driving job.
The expanded recruiting pavil-ion puts you in contact with rep-resentatives from 99 exhibiting fl eets, all of which are seeking
to hire drivers just like you. You can speak directly to fl eet representatives who can tell you about their fl eet’s programs and benefi ts. These representatives can tell you other valuable information that you might normally miss out on, like the potential for career progression.
Just outside the pavilion, you can also fi nd additional recruiting companies. These companies can help you fi nd a job

based on your criteria. They also represent other fl eets they may not be exhibiting on the show fl oor.
This gives you an opportunity to fi nd the job that meets your needs.
Even if you don’t live and work in Texas, you shouldn’t skip the show. While there certainly are fl eets who operate solely out of Texas, there are a number of medium and large carriers with terminals across the United States.
The fl eets recruiting at the show include some of the biggest carriers in the country, including Crete Carriers, KAG, Schneider National, Celadon, and Mercer Transpor-tation. Over 29 states are represented in the pavilion alone.
You don’t have to stay in the Recruiting
Pavilion. There are many areas throughout GATS that are built with you in mind. Af-ter you’ve found your job, you can take a stroll to Landstar’s Fit for the Road Health and Wellness Pavilion for access to free health screenings or take a load off in our new beer garden.
At GATS we are dedicated to improving your life by helping you be a happier and a healthier person. There are many ways you can improve your physical health, and fi nd-ing a job that fi ts both your needs and the needs of your family can be an important fi rst step.
Don’t wait to spend $10 at the door. Register for The Great American Trucking Show now and take advantage of every-thing the show has to offer for free. ■

Finding Relief from Acid Reflux/HeartburnThe esophagus is the canal connecting our throat to our stomach. Acid refl ux may result when the band of muscles that create a valve in the esophagus do not open or close prop-erly. This allows acid to fl ow up (refl ux) from the stomach. The acid can irritate the sensitive tissues of the esophagus and cause pain which is a condition known as heartburn.
According to the American Gastroenterologi-cal Association, more than 60 million Ameri-cans experience acid refl ux/heartburn at least once per month. Having acid refl ux can result in serious consequences, like a disease named GERD. Gastro-Esophageal Refl ux Disease (GERD) is a condition based on chronic or re-curring episodes of acid refl ux that may cause infl ammation to the esophageal tissue.
Let’s see what other symptoms you may expe-rience with acid refl ux, foods to avoid, and foods or supple-ments that may prevent or help you manage the effects. If you experience acid refl ux frequently, be certain to fol-low up with your doctor.
What causes acid refl ux?As mentioned, there is a valve at the lower end of the esophagus that allows food into the stomach. This valve called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) should close
after allowing the food in the stomach. If your valve does not close properly, you will be more prone to experiencing the following symptoms:
• Heartburn• Diffi culty swallowing• Pain that worsens when you lay down• Pain that worsens when you bend over• A burning feeling in the chest area that tends to occur after eating and may occur at night• Burning feeling in the throat (acidic, sour or salty tasting fl uid in the back of throat)• Feeling that food is “stuck” in your throat or in the middle of your chest
Food ChoicesAlthough acid refl ux is a physical condition, certain foods may be triggers in your symp-toms.

ON THE ROAD TO HEALTH
Foods to avoid when you have acid refl ux may include:• Spicy foods• Greasy foods• Fatty foods (pizza and fast food)• Acidic and foods (tomatoes and citrus fruits/juices)• Alcohol• Caffeine and carbonated beverages
Different foods may affect some more than
others, so you will need to fi nd out which foods aggravate or trigger the situation for you.
Foods that help with acid refl ux include:• Whole grains (oatmeal, whole wheat breads, and crackers)• Protein: (lean meats, low-fat dairy, and fi sh) • Fruits and vegetables high in fi ber
Find ReliefOver the counter antacids, such as TUMS, may temporarily relieve acid refl ux symp-toms. There are some that feel reducing the acid in your stomach could have detrimental effects, so it is recommended this not be a regular course of action.
Baking soda may be used as a natural remedy for heartburn and GERD relief. Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda with half a glass of water. If you have high blood pressure or are

ON THE ROAD TO HEALTHon a sodium-restricted diet, this remedy will not be the best option.
It is said that ginger root may aid in digestive issues and can be easily transported in your truck in dried or candied form. Also, certain enzyme supplements may aid in the digestive process – particularly enzymes that aid in the digestion of proteins.
Other helpful tips:• Avoid eating two to three hours prior to lying down.• Avoid wearing tight fi tting clothes or belts.• Avoid eating large portions.• Be sure to chew your food thoroughly and slowly.• Lose weight if you are overweight to reduce abdominal pressure.• Find ways to release stress. • Stop smoking; nicotine will aggravate the tissues.
BEWARE: Long-term use of over the coun-ter and prescription antacids, such as Pri-losec and Aciphex, may result in further digestive disorders, such as IBS, or possibly reduce the absorption of essential nutrients. It is possible your body is not producing enough acid to aid in proper digestion, so antacids may be the opposite of what your body requires. Be sure to consult with your doctor to fi nd the root of your particular condition, and heed some of this article’s suggestions towards a healthier lifestyle.
As a professional truck driver, it is sometimes a challenge to fi nd healthy options for your meals. Be sure to prepare healthy snacks and meals before leaving home and identify stops along your route that have healthy food op-tions. This will help prevent suffering an acid refl ux episode while driving down the high-way.

Spotlight OnMillion Safe Miles Driver Bruce Richard
Gordon Trucking Inc. recognizes safety leadersBruce Richard, a driver for Gordon
Trucking Inc., was recently honored for reaching one million safe miles. Richard, who has been driving for 19 years, 10 of them with GTI, also was selected to com-pete in the state truck driving champion-ship in Indianapolis, Indiana. Richard took time out to talk to us about his career with GTI.
Q: How long have you been driving, and how did you get started in the industry?A: I’ve been driving for 19 years. I worked at Sikorsky Aircraft in Coates-ville, PA building military helicopters for 15 years, and then I was laid off. I moved from Connecticut to Virginia and was looking for a new career. My father was a truck driver at one time, so I got my Class A license and started driving. He thought it was a good choice for me.
Q: Where are you based? A: I haul out of the GTI terminal in In-dianapolis, IN, and live in Jacksonville, FL, with my wife. We’ve been together 27 years and married almost 24 years.
Q: What equipment do you operate?A: I drive a 2015 Freightliner Cascadia equipped with an auxiliary power unit so I don’t have to idle my truck. It sup-plies me with air conditioning and heat-ing as well as electricity, so I can run a microwave, TV and coffee pot.
Q: What do you haul and where?A: I haul general commodities — basi-cally anything you can put in a dry van, from scrap paper to water, fruits, nuts, canned goods, a little bit of everything. When I lived in California, I had a dedicated route, but since I moved to Florida a year ago, I run the US Fleet in all 48 states. I’m away from home be-tween two to three weeks at a time and then I’m home for two or three days.
Q: What do you love about trucking?A: I enjoy driving the 48 states. I get to see the country and different sights ev-ery day. I love seeing the different sun-rises and sunsets all over the country.
Q: What do you listen to while driving?A: I have XM radio to listen to talk shows and the trucking channel. I’m
0815 hire road HTD.indd 1 7/8/15 3:18 PM

also part of a chat line that drivers call into and talk with other drivers around the country. We use it as a tool to keep us from getting bored and also to learn about accidents, weather conditions, routing, directions and fi nding lost driv-ers. We’re trying to bring the camarade-rie back into the industry that was there at one time, like helping drivers that have fallen on hard times. My wife and I are an example. We had fallen on hard times, and this group pitched in and helped us.
Q: What do you like to do when you aren’t driving?A: My wife and I like going to the beach, visiting family, hanging out with friends and just having a good time. We also help out with a lot of charities around our community.
Q: What’s it like to drive for GTI? A: They’re very family-oriented, they’ve treated me very well, and the equip-ment they supply us with is top-notch. My wife is disabled, and there are times when I have had to take family medical leave, and they were very supportive. For example, when my wife had an accident, and she couldn’t walk or get dressed and needed a lot of help, I had to take almost three months off.
I was trying to move into the Heartland side of the company so I could drive local routes, but it hadn’t happened yet. Then I met the vice president of opera-tions [Midwest and East Region], Brett Terchila, at the Mid-America Truck Show in Louisville, Kentucky. Later, he heard about what happened, and one day he called me. “You don’t remember me, but we met at Louisville, and I un-
derstand what’s going on. We’re going to be here for you, and we are not going to let anything happen to you. We’ll do what needs to be done,” he told me.
So, with Brett supporting me and the Jacksonville terminal manager’s help, I was able to run local out of Jacksonville and still work for Gordon Trucking. I was home every night and off on the weekends so that I could take care of my wife. When her health improved, I went back over the road.
Gordon bent over backwards for me, and Heartland did the same thing. It’s just a great company to work for. I’ve found a home, a family. I can call my dispatcher, and I don’t even have to tell him who I am. He knows me by my voice.
Q: Do you have any advice for new drivers?A: You need to come into the industry with an open mind and the realiza-tion that this is going to be a lifestyle change. If you aren’t willing to change, it’s going to be very hard for you, because this is not your normal 9-5 job. It’s totally different from what you are used to if you are coming out of a factory or warehouse work or any other blue collar industry. You have to have people skills, because you are going to be dealing with the public on a daily basis, and sometimes you have to have nerves of steel. Car drivers don’t know how to share the road and don’t have a clue how hard it is for us to stop a vehicle or maneuver through traffi c and cities. Getting into this industry is not something to take lightly, but the rewards for doing a good job pay off. ■

Mel Fox named Outstanding TeacherBill McNamee is a long time Trucker
Buddy who has served on the Board of Directors in his time. He wanted to nominate Mel Fox as an Outstanding Teacher. Here is what Bill had to say about her in his own words:
“I am writing today to nominate my teach-er, Mrs. Mary ‘Mel’ Fox, for the Trucker Buddy Outstanding Teacher Award. I have been blessed to have her as my assigned teacher since 1997. It comes as no surprise that she would be considered one of the longest serving teachers in the program, because she truly understands and pro-motes the program in her classroom.
I remember the day I received her intro-duction letter back in 1997. She introduced herself as a 440year old teacher with a fourth grade classroom who was looking through a magazine and saw mention of the Trucker Buddy program. She didn’t
hesitate to sign up. I was newly enrolled, and this was to be my fi rst class. Never did I think I would be here 17 years later writing to you about this wonderful person who has become my friend and Trucker Buddy partner.
Over the years, I have gone through changes both in family and employment, which caused a few periods of absence from the program. Luckily, I had some good folks step up and fi ll the void while I was off handling life. Mrs. Fox never strayed from the program and kept it strong and active in her classroom. As luck would have it, I returned to Trucker Buddy at the time when she needed a driver again, and I was able to resume with her class.
My employers always allowed me to par-ticipate, and Mrs. Fox always made sure the kids had “Mister Bill’s Trucker Buddy” t-shirts made each year for the kids to wear for our annual Trucker Buddy Day. She also involves parents, and most years, there have been quite an excited bunch of them at the visit. Occasionally, the media appeared, and even though I think the program is more about the kids, Mrs. Fox made sure that I received quite a bit of at-tention, which really made me feel like a hero. Our visits have been on the television news channels, and we’ve been featured in magazines and newspapers. We’ve even been blessed to be treated as VIP’s at the TA truck stop, Kenworth dealership, and even the Wisconsin weigh station when we

took the kids on fi eld trips. None of this would have been possible without Mrs. Fox and her dedication to the program.
She goes above and beyond what I would consider participation. She opens up her classroom and basically allows me to run the day with whatever I plan to teach the students. She does make sure it runs smoothly and on schedule, because I tend to ramble on about trucking. Luckily, she keeps things in check.
When students and their parents actually compete with other families to be part of her classroom, that tells me that not only do I think she is an outstanding teacher, but so does the community she lives in.
It is absolutely my pleasure to nominate her for this award. She exemplifi es every-thing about it. “ ■
