Day 4 (Wednesday) 13th August 2014
-
The beginning of the 21st century has been witnessing the increasing role of cities in influencing the development of the world. Not only because that from 2007 onward more than half people in the world live in the cities, but also because more and more networks of major cities, which are considered as the engines of growth of nations, have been established to answer the challenges put forward by the globalization. The key feature to comprehend this phenomena is innovation. Networks of major cities wrap up the innovation invented by these cities to keep them ahead.
However, the speed of change imposed by globalizations challenges is rarely being matched by the pace of change of the city society; resulting in severe urban problems, such as environmental degradation, increasing criminal rates, etc. To cope with these problems, planning is crucial. Planning shall assure that the balance development is achieved by major cities in the world. The determination of cities managers is being tested in imple-menting both innovation and planning to achieve the goal that is desired by its society.
Track 1Smart Cities, Future CitiesGetting it Right in Designing Cities for the FutureCities reflect the need and the vision of their residence. With the growing awareness of the citizen and increasing opportunity to partic-ipate in the decision-making process, policymakers have a wide range of policy options available in designing the cities they manage. The remaining duty for them now is to wisely choose between the needs and the wants.
Track 2Inclusivity of CitiesThe Socio-Economic Dimensions of Resilient CitiesFrom the Jane Jacobs Death and Life of Great American Cities to the Richard Floridas The Rise of the Creative Class, the inclusivity of cities remain the central issue for most cities, particularly in Western society. Assurance of inclusivity will enable cities proceed further, since it attracts talented individuals to contribute and to reside in these cities. Eastern society, on the other hand, consider rules and norms as important things in their life. Therefore, inclusivity of cities may be translated to different explanation in different parts of the world.
Track 3ICT in Todays CitiesTechnology revolutionazed the communication process. Especially nowadays, a great idea brought forward in the virtual public space (i.e. the social media) will go viral in short time. This means that ideas are trasmitted easily today. This will eventually impact cities, which have the better connection to the internet as compared to other areas. It is interesting to see how far ICT industry can push themselves to bring innovation that may transform the way city dwellers interact and thus reshape the city structure.
Track 4Focus on the Most Vulnerable Group in the CityThe gap between the have and the dont have may be huge in cities. It is of importance to give proper attention to the poor of the cities because at least of two things. First, they are in the frontiers of the competition with those who own capital, who also live in the city. Second, they see the lifestyle of the have by having not enough money to enjoy it. These two things, if not managed well, will lead to social problems.
Track 5Infrastructure Challenges in CitiesInfrastructure development is the key feature in the cities develop-ment. Quality infrastructure will support productive activity of cities and also meet the basic needs of their citizen. Ability to provide infrastructure in a more sustainable way will put cities as major actors in global attempt to create a greener earth. However, infrastructure provision requires a lot of money. Modern cities are expected to be able to look for potential fund resources themselves, without the help of the country they are located.
Track 6Resiliency and the CitiesDisasters related to climate change is threatening the cities. Most of big cities are located in seaside, and sea-level rise brought by climate change will inundated their coastal area. Without proper strategy to tackle it, we will see cities suffered from frequent floods, permanent inundation, fresh water crisis and infrastructure damage which will directly reduce citys productivity, livelihood as well as quality of life. Therefore, cities should take appropriate action to adapt towards new challenge and hence, increase their resiliency.
Track 7Governance and Financing Your CitiesThe increasing awareness of urban residents in the decision making process is an important benefit in the development of cities nowa-days. However, without qualified and capable bureaucrats, this benefit shall be in vain. Therefore, a visionary government with the ability to enable wide participation is of importance in the modern cities. This is including the ability to find alternative funding to realize the dreams of the residents.
Track 8Urbanism and Sustainability of Our CitiesWhat is sustainability in the context of cities development? Is it maintaining a proportional size of green space areas? Is it reducing the usage of vehicles? Or is it a gradual change of the culture of the cities inhabitants? In a broader context, the issue of sustainability is widely perceived as a hindrance to the economic growth. Whether is it right or wrong, different perspectives are invited to discuss the track.
