che attraverso la loro rappresentazione ne
raggiungono le tensioni interne e fanno ri-emergere
i valori residui (fortunatamente ancora importanti)
dell’individuo.

Also the images of the stereotypes of the metropolis
are RE-FLECTED: skyscrapers, bridges, roads,
as well as the ones of the nightmares (traffic,
the mastodon-ships, the frenzied running of the
pedestrians) which appear both in the “straight”

deriving emotions and anguishes- narrated and
emphasized by the artists.
A reality/non reality which, only through the colour

the cold rigidity of iron and cement to the world of
tactile sensations which envelops us any time we

vediamo RI-FLESSI. Sono nostri il volto, il rumore di
un passo. Siamo noi gli automi del “modernismo”
in marcia continua verso il nulla.
Una continua ambiguità, come quella che
propone WILFRED LANG, artista nato a Shanghai,
ma attivo a New York.
Metropoli come luogo in

We must not be surprised by what is found within
the cities by ACCARDI, the ones “fixed” upon
the canvas are always indecipherable facts, but
when we observe them, we feel like being part
of events which RE-FLECT us. A face, the sound
of a pace belong to us. We are the automatons
of “modernism”, constantly marching towards
nothing. A continuous ambiguity, as the one
proposed by WILFRED LANG, artist born in
Shanghai, but active in New York. His interpretation
of the urban landscape is filled with real and
abstract figures, too refined, ethereal and made
of luminous matter to be real, too recognizable to
be abstract. From this repeated ambivalence his
personal tale of the extreme landscape, that is the
contemporary city, arises.
Metropolis intended as the place where man, as
a modern samurai, faces impossible challenges
which do not accord any relief.
ANGELO ACCARDI, from Salerno, is as well an

element of connection between real dimension and
the hidden truths of a parallel world where it can be

Rhythmically the slight figures by PIETRO
SCAMPINI march towards nothing; created at the
end of the 7O’s, they recall Africa, a place where
movement means the effort of reaching a (better)
place free from sufferings.
A walking humanity researching a fairer world,
which is still out of reach.
Wilfred LANG, Angelo ACCARDI and Pietro
SCAMPINI are, therefore, three artistic personalities
who through different visions, in different places

urban contemporaneity, its contradictions, its

successiva breve esperienza all’Accademia
formulare quei pensieri e quella visione pittorica
inconfessabili. Il simbolo usa forme riconoscibili
per raccontare quel mondo parallelo nel quale
l’uomo vive a volte senza averne coscienza.
Angelo Accardi is an artist with an interesting and
complex personality, peculiar of those people
who keep looking for new sensations, go beyond
appearance, hunting for hidden symbolical values,
origin of truth.
Born in Sapri (near Salerno) in 1964, he began
his artistic path showing a tendency towards the
representation of “figure”, narrated with strong
expressiveness.
After a short period attending the Academy of Fine
Arts in Naples, he faced a deep crisis related to his
artistic identity, which lasted some years leading
him to abstract production.
This period of inner reflection allowed him to
formulate the thoughts and pictorial vision
characterizing his present activity: the symbol
became the key to the doors of hidden reality,
which leads to the dimension where profound,
sealed, unavowable meanings reveal themselves.
To tell about the parallel world where man lives,
sometimes without being aware of it, the symbol
uses recognizable forms.
Through this mild and disturbing ambiguity, a
dualism between appearance and meaning,

un palcoscenico urbano nel quale avvengono
fatti incomprensibili, dove aerei decollano,
atterrano, sorvolano, apparendo contenitori
d’umanità trasportata come bestiame. Non
vediamo passeggeri ma intuiamo che nell’enorme
pancia del velivolo si ammassano uomini inermi,
ubbidienti.
Aerei e navi appaiono come strumenti nelle mani
Accardi leads us inside pieces of art where
everything moves: from the vague outlines of any
detail, to the trails of light representing speed, to the
evident and nervous drawing gestural.
It is an urban stage where incomprehensible facts
happen, where airplanes take off, land, fly over,
appearing like containers of a humanity carried
like livestock. We can’t see the passengers, but we
perceive that defenceless and obedient human
beings are hoarded inside the enormous airplane.
Disconcertment, worry, loss of identity, as
provoked by the immense bow of a ship plowing
a metropolitan street among skyscrapers, thus
deprived of any majesty and significance.
Airplanes and ships appear as instruments in the
hands of unknown entities, casting shadows which
eliminate any kind of individuality and controlling a
trapped humanity unable to rebel, petrified by fear
and anxiety.
Indeed the airplanes and ships, as the only
elements of dissimilarity and presences “out of
context”, compared to the metropolitan conformity,
generate reflections through this incongruence.
Observing Accardis’ pieces of art, questions turn
14
scorgiamo struzzi dai colori improbabili come
colore come sudore e fatica, rappresentano
un’umanità senza volto, senza identità, automi
del “modernismo” in marcia continua verso il
nulla.
into disconcertment: as it happens when we notice
ostriches coloured in green, turquoise or red which,
out of all proportion, bewildered stroll the streets of
a city, being at the same time proud owners of an
unnatural land, still “out of context”.
Some of them howl, but their cries resound within a
deaf and mute world, inhabited by unaware and
unconscious human beings.
Signs, scratches, carved words, colours
pouring like sweat and effort, represent a kind of
humanity without face and identity, automaton
of “modernism”, constantly marching towards
nothing.
Perhaps only the ostrich with its huge body,
amazing feathers, little brain, the big evident eye,
can embody human reality.
Thus, through disturbing images - since “out
of context” - which stimulate reflection, the
condemnation of discomfort becomes more
significant.

cinese.
quella moderna. Nulla nell’opera di Wilfred, che
ora vive a New York dopo un periodo alle Hawaii,
appare scontato.
riconoscibili.
Entrando in
As a perfect combination between Oriental and
Occidental cultures, the style by Wilfred Lang
(who doesn’t like to be identified through his
surname) is a perfect transition between realism
and abstractionism. Born in Shanghai in a family
of Dutch artists, at the age of seven Wilfred began
to apply to watercolor. However, when he turned
eighteen-and entered the Fine Art College of
Shanghai- he moved his interest towards modern
art. Nothing can be foreseen within the pieces of art
by Wilfred -who is living in New York, after a period
at Hawaii-.
A polished melting-pot of inspirations and
techniques, hard to decipher - therefore enigmatic
and stimulating- , even if the chosen subjects are
often easily recognizable.
This is why, thanks to the interpretation given by
the artist, a familiar image of New York and the
Brooklyn’s Bridge is perceived in a new and more
complex way. It is the demonstration that art should
be experienced, rather than reported.
This is the experience Wilfred is offering us, a path
leading to an unrealistic universe, soaked with
conceptual abstraction.

all’esperienza vitale. L’ambiente metropolitano,
estremo paesaggio urbano, appare come l’unico
Entering this dimension, we clearly identify the
way of feeling, the thought, the emotion lying
underneath and determining the image.
We are urged to start a voyage among lines,
shapes, lights and colors which express gestures,
dynamical energies, knowledge and cultures,
before defining the subject.
Reality and abstraction merge to shape living
experience. The metropolitan context, an extreme
urban landscape, is shown as the only place
to live, a place where any individual could face
the challenges of existence to find answers and
solutions.
Like modern Romantics, we can nothing but
undergo its appeal and at the same time fear its
force. A powerful magnetism made of lights, effects
and plain and nervous brush-strokes.
Then suddenly an unpredictable tinged tear
appears, surprising and fascinating us. Wilfred’s
works of art never deal with contemplation, but with
a constantly dynamic observation: there is no spot
available to rest the eyes because, ceaselessly,
they keep on running upon the canvas, going
beyond the canvas itself, which is not intended

raccontano, facendoli emergere dall’inconscio
come scrittura automatica. Grattacieli, ponti,
barche che acquistano valore simbolico più che
realistico.
ostacolo, possono liberare emozioni e sguardi
ed affermare che nulla è come appare. E la
superiorità del piccolo rimane l’enigma. Barche
as a defined space, but as one of the countless
possible point of views.
The one by Wilfred is a painting of action, made
of gestures which narrate, emerging from the
subconscious like they were produced by
automatic writing. Skyscrapers, bridges, boats,
filled with a symbolical value rather than a realistic
one.
Symbols of the disproportion between human
dimension and the metropolitan landscape, fully
expressed by the little sails dotting the bay, only
reference to an original nature into which New York
mirrors itself.
Only the boats and the wind, without bonds or
obstacles, can free their emotions and glances,
stating than anything is like it appears. Thus the
superiority of the little ones remains an unsolved
enigma. The boats and the wind can enjoy the
beauty born from human madness, which dared
- as underlined by the urban context presented by
Wilfred - to urge its creativity beyond imaginable,
abstract, creativity itself.

forse inesistente. E ciò conferma come Scampini,
Born at the end of the 7O’s, “Shadows” is one of
the first artistic expressions by Pietro Scampini.
Slight figures recalling - without a “shade” of doubt
- Africa and the gesture of walking, the only way
these populations use to move.
The figures cut into matter by Scampini seem to be
in constant movement, looking for a place without
problems and sufferings, a true starting point.
However, the synthesis made by the artist of these
imaginary figures, whose only perceivable gesture
is walking, makes us realize that the moment for
rest -last purpose of this research- is still distant,
maybe non-existent. Thus demonstrating how
Scampini, during this specific period of his artistic
pattern, shared the difficulties of the historical
context, characterized by the strong belief that the
world was going to face the loss of any certainty.
His bidimensional Shadows become projections
of a humanity who uses matter to represent the
essence of being and the impalpable. This is how
bidimensionality becomes the natural mediation
between material and immaterial.
Pietro Scampini is able to enter the audience’s
imaginary, by cutting into iron these synthetic

immateriale.
come individuo. Gruppi di Ombre, di uomini, che
trovano un’ambientazione perfetta nella mostra
anthropomorphous figures, which never grant
space to the realistic narration.
A way to shape imaginary places and rhythmical
sounds made resound by multitudes of human
beings upon far, sunny and hard lands.
It is the eternal migration, the path any individual,
any creature, had to cover since its appearance
upon earth. Feet made to walk, legs able to pace
safely, eyes addressing far away, where the
horizon meets the sky: words resembling the lyrics
of a lullaby, echoing through the savanna, or a
song accompanying men and women pointlessly
moving on the metropolitan asphalt, evidence of a
mutual destiny.
The Shadows by Scampini always move within
large groups, not by themselves. Whether this
might be reassuring within a world which can’t
bear solitude, it is also indicative of the difficulty
of behaving as individuals. Groups of Shadows,
of human beings, perfectly located within the
exhibition organized by “Punto sull’Arte”, especially
for the association with the pieces of art by Wilfred
and Accardi. An ideal chance for offering inner
reflections and understanding - through the works

come Wilfred e Accardi.
destino l’uomo stia riservandosi o, quanto meno,
quale realtà stia vivendo.
Sorprende, inoltre, come Scampini riesca ad
affrontare tematiche cosi profonde ed inquietanti
senza ricorrere ad un linguaggio fortemente
espressionistico, troppo spesso fatto di tinte
violente.
complesse. Quella tragedia che ci costringe con
inaspettata energia al cambiamento e che, per
questo, ci salva.
by three different artists - which kind of destiny are
we reserving for ourselves or, at least, which kind of
reality are we living in.
Moreover, it is surprising how Scampini could face
such profound and disturbing themes without
resorting to an expressionistic language, often
characterized by violent colours. The artist from
Castronno (born in Cardano al Campo in 195O)
chose instead the levity inside the line which,
naturally, curves, rushes, breaks into dynamic,
poetic, ironic and, at the same time, tragic
compositions.
The Poetry which rescues us when our soul needs
to go beyond reality.
The whim for smiles and irony, which allows us to
pass through complex situations.
The Tragedy, which desperately urges us towards
change, therefore saving us.

Le ombre di Pietro Scampini sono essenzialmente
antropomorfe.
scultura basata prevalentemente sui volumi, sui
rapporti tra massa e spazio, tra ombra e luce, tra
dentro e fuori.
dove l’opera in ferro viene a collocarsi.
The shadows by Pietro Scampini are essentially
anthropomorphous. It is a representation
linearly modulated, availing itself of a sign which
rhythmically marks the marching, proceeding,
hurrying, running of the individual.
The “shadows”’ experience, developed between
1977-’79, is a turning point of a research tended
towards the decline of physical image in favour of
a sculpture based upon volumes, the relationships
between matter and space, shade and light, in
and out.
While the “shadows” born from sketches upon
scattered papers like the other pieces of art,
turned into iron structures, the other sculptures
by Scampini would have picked marble, plaster,
wood.
Therefore, the “shadows” own a precise and
unique originality: they focus attention upon a
distinct object - in this case human being- who
moves, interacts with the surrounding space, with
the paper first and then with the context where the
iron piece of art is placed.
The surprising detail of these iron works is the

traced by the pencil; there is a starting point,
from which the idea spreads in a natural and
progressive way, without rests or afterthoughts.
A speed of tracing which becomes movement,
rhythmical vitality, tension.
Through this kind of linearism, the heavy material is
softened and the whole vision is fit up with a fluency
of acts and situations.
An elementary language which allows a deeper
permeation between the piece of art and the
surrounding space since the latter enters the
sculpture, rendering it even lighter and more
movable.
A spatial choice influenced by Calder, Fontana, a
sort of plastic dynamism, never hard and heavy:
from the essential and pure forms, creativity and
mild irony, an astonishing vitality comes out, not
without a poetical effect.
