POPPY SEED ROLL – A TRADITIONAL PRODUCT OF VOJVODINA

Abstract

The invention of a dough roll is attributed to an anonymous 16th century pastry maker from Pozhun (today’s Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia) who made small horseshoe-shaped rolls filled with poppy seeds for St. Nikolas day and gave them away to children. Due to the Austro-Hungarian influence on the Vojvodina region during the second half of the 19th century, a Christmas poppy seed roll began to be made in the area. Vojvodina’s walnut roll and poppy seed roll were created thanks to the skill of local women who introduced certain innovations into the making of the dough product, and adjusted it to the local tastes. The rolls made in Vienna had a ticker layer of dough, and in this they differed from rolls made in Vojvodina, which had a thin layer of dough.

“Štrudlijada”, a traditional annual gastronomic manifestation devoted to roll-making, takes place in Novo Miloševo. It is visited by several thousand visitors and local inhabitants. Women from the Circle of Serbian Sisters prepare a roll which is 18.40 m long. It is sliced and served to the visitors of the event.
