Model Schools may teach coding State Education Department exploring possibilities of introducing the subject in curriculum

yuVraJ aKuLaHYDERABAD

after successfully organis-ing a training programme incoding for students of theTelangana State modelSchool at palamakula, theSchool education depart-ment is exploring the possi-bilities of introducing cod-ing in the curriculum for allmodel Schools.

recently, about 20 stu-dents of classes IX to XII,who did not have any tech-nological background, wererandomly picked and trainedin programming languagesincluding python, C, C++,and Hadoop among othersfor 20 days.

This was done using a self-learning tool along with lap-tops provided by a Hyder-abad-based company. Thesestudents, who made theirmark in the programminglanguages in the schoolphase, were first generationlearners in their families andtheir parents work as dailywage labourers and auto-rickshaw drivers.

now the task of studyingthe learning outcomes ofthese students has been en-trusted by the department tothe State Council of educa-tional research and Train-ing (SCerT).

“engineering students ac-quire these skills during thecourse work or by enrollingin coaching centres. Butthese school students have

shown exceptional pro-gramming skills with basictraining and they have thepotential to become expertsby the time they completegraduation. The SCerT hasbeen asked to study thelearning outcome levels ofstudents. Based on the rec-ommendations, the depart-

ment will take a call onwhether to make coding partof the curriculum or not,” asenior official said.

The 194 model Schoolsare providing intensivelong-term coaching for com-petitive examinations likeJoint entrance examination, national eligibility-cum-en-

trance Test, and engineer-ing, agriculture and medicalCommon entrance Testsfrom this year.

The idea is to take secureas many as seats in the pres-tigious Indian Institutes ofTechnology, and prominentengineering and medicalcolleges across the country.

For the academic year 2018-19, eight students from theseschools cracked Jee-main.This apart, a record numberof 482 students were se-lected for the six-year inte-grated B Tech programme atthe rajiv Gandhi universityof Knowledge Technolo-gies-Basar in 2018-19.

Games can be used to pro-mote best practices whichhelp in combating differentissues, including concernslike human trafficking.

as a means to take thisidea to a new level, uS Con-sulate General Hyderabadin partnership with Indoamerican Center started afour-day workshop onGames for Good: designingGames with a Social Impactat T-Hub here on Thursday.

The programme seeks tocommunicate with videogame designers on usingtheir skills to make gameshelp address social issues.

It includes a two-day pro-gramme where americangames design expert SeanBouchard from universityof Southern Californiamedia and Games division, american gaming industryveteran Vijay Lakshman andIIIT-H professor Kavita Ve-muri will interact with par-ticipants. also lined up is atwo-day “Game jam” duringwhich participants will formteams and conceptualisetheir own games that ad-dress social issues.

Speaking at the inaugural,uS Consul General in Hy-derabad, Katherine Haddasaid the presence of excel-lent educational institu-tions, innovative technolo-gists and support extendedby Telangana governmenthave made Hyderabad afast-growing hub for videogame development in India.Through the gaming diplo-macy programme, localgame designers would beable to connect with expertsto exchange ideas on how to

Credits likely forstudents opting towork with startups HYDERABAD: JawaharlalNehru Technological Uni-versity – Hyderabad in-charge Vice-ChancellorJayesh Ranjan proposedcredits for students optingto work with startups whilepursuing their regularcourses. The pro-

posal hasbeen dis-cussedwith StateCouncil ofHigher Edu-cation andefforts were being made tointroduce the option soon.Students, who desire to

work with startups, will begiven credits for their ex-perience and performancein companies and a partic-ular subject or two can beexempted from the cur-riculum for such students. The idea is to promote en-trepreneurship skillsamong them from collegedays. Many universitiesabroad facilitate this op-tion and in India it is yet tobe introduced, he said.Introducing this option

while ensuring it is not inconflict with regular aca-demics will help studentswork in their favourite sub-jects or project exten-sively, besides gainingsome quality experience,he said. The students willhave to enrol with regis-tered incubators and theirmanagers will have to sendthe progress reports of thestudents. Based on theirperformance, credits canbe awarded, said Ranjan.

Adding fun to rehab programmes HYDERABAD: Gam-ing is not all aboutentertainment any-more. It can aid in ef-fective recovery ofpatients or make therehab programmemore fun and chal-lenging. Many gameshave been introducedfor stroke survivorsand other patientsand gaming compa-nies were working

extensively on developing such games. American gam-ing industry veteran Vijay Lakshman has worked withchildren hospitals dealing with cerebral palsy and de-veloped games for helping them overcome challenges.“It is about patient compliance. Most of them com-mence rehab and tend to give up after sometime due tolack of any goals or fun element,” he explains. The idea of introducing games for patients was to

make rehab easier. For instance, in a game, playershave to conquer the world’s popular summits like MtEverest and this comes with goals to motivate them, hesaid. Lakshman has the credit of developing 87 gamesand is presently working on two more games.
