Potentate Message
David Barnekoff
Nobles & Ladies,
Liz and I would like to thank all of you, our Nobles and Ladies, for your commitment and dedication to our Temple and our
philanthropy, Shriners Hospital for Children.
We see it every day, at every Stated Meeting, at every PV and at every Temple activity. It is so rewarding to see this commit-
ment and dedication throughout the jurisdiction. More than anything else this has made our year even more special than we
could have imagined. Thank you.
I would like to thank David & Adrienne Coolidge for putting together Sports night for the May Stated Meeting. It was a meet-
ing of special food by the Purveyors, a specialty drink by Activities, themed music by the Million $ Band, and the cheers.
Who can forget all the competitions?
The June Stated meeting will have a Circus/State Fair midway theme. Watch death defying high-wire acts (well maybe not),
watch wild animals perform. See our clowns perform their special talents and learn how to make all kinds of special bal-
loons. How many different types of Clowns do we have? Attend and find out. We have a plethora of activities planned. The
Purveyors have some special food planned. Bring your kids, grandkids, bring your family, bring some potential Shriners.
Lets look at some upcoming events and activities.
We have parades and more parades coming up. Sutter Creek on June 3rd, Nevada City Constitution Parade September 9th,
Folsom Veterans Parade November 11th, Woodland Holiday parade, December 8th.
Like horse racing? We have that too. Attend horse races at the State Fair on July 13th. Cheer on the “special horses” during
the first race. More details will be coming out shortly.
Don’t forget the Ben Ali/Scottish Rite Picnic on September 16th. We have moved it a couple of weeks later to get away from
the 105-110-degree heat.
Do you like golf? We have golf. Participate in the popular Tehama County Shrine Club golf tournament on August 25th at
the Wilcox Oaks Golf Club in Red Bluff. Want more? Participate in the Alcazar/Ben Ali golf tournament at the Bartley
Cavanaugh Golf Course in Sacramento on October 13th.
Just want to watch and volunteer? How about joining Ben Ali at the Shriners Hospital Golf Tournament in Las Vegas from
October 30 to November 4th and see how the pros do it. Volunteer by day and party by night in Las Vegas. How much better
can it get? Contact Leigh Leidig at (916) 539-8749, or [email protected] for more details.
We have a very special one-day tour scheduled in the Bay Area on September 22, 2018. Howard White and Eldon Vipond
have been working for months to get the correct balance of fun, frolic and history built into this trip. The trip will include a
visit to the Rosie the Riveter Museum in Richmond, lunch at the Berkley Yacht Club and a tour of a special ship. For anyone
who knows Howard and Eldon you know they are not holding anything back!!! Call or email either for additional infor-
mation.
Yours in the faith,
David Barnekoff

SHCNC Research
Walk For Love
Research Discovery: Research scientists at our
Shriners Hospital are working to find new ways to prevent birth
defects and other disabling conditions. Laura Borodinsky,
Ph.D., a principal investigator on the 6th floor in the Institute of
Pediatric Regenerative Medicine (IPRM), has found that a drug
used to treat epileptic seizures may lead to birth defects if used
during pregnancy. The results of Dr. Borodinsky’s study are
published in the May 2018 issue of the Journal of Neurosci-
ence. “We know that some of the most common birth defects,
including spina bifida, are caused by a defect in the neural
tube. The hope is that our research will help us find new
ways to promote the healthy development of the neural tube
and, in turn, reduce the incidence of spina bifida and other
neural birth disorders,” says Dr. Borodinsky. The findings un-
covered in Dr. Borodinsky’s study also may lead to the develop-
ment of new and safer medications to treat epilepsy.

When 15-year-old Antwon Harris was carried off the football field due to a knee injury in the fall of 2017, he questioned his future as an athlete. Thanks to the Sports Medicine team at Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren — Northern California, he is on track to return to
the playing field. Nicole Friel, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine spe-cialist, reconstructed Antwon’s ACL and repaired the meniscus before prescribing a healthy dose of physical therapy. Bill Workman, P.T., a Shriners Hospital physical therapist specializing in sports injuries, is guiding Antwon through the rehabilitation process.
Antwon says his experience at Shriners Hospital has given him the strength and confi-dence he needs to return to his favorite sports — baseball, basketball and football. Antwon’s mother says, “Our experience with Shriners has been amazing. We were

Greetings from the Ladies of Ila Neb Court #51
Volunteers for the
Las Vegas, October 31st to November 4th, 2018.
By Leigh Leidig, 916-539-8744
Now is the time to register as a volunteer for the Shriners Hospitals Open Golf Tournament. Ben Ali
will be recognized as the sponsor and marshals of hole #11 for the four days of the tournament. This
is a great honor for Ben Ali as there are only two other temples who sponsor holes, El Riad of So. Da-
kota and Gizeh of Canada
Ben Ali members, family, and friends are encouraged to volunteer. A step by step guide to register is
on the Ben Ali website. Marshal training will be provided. There are also two optional events: A Kick
Off Your Heels Women's Day on Tuesday, October 30th, and a Shriners BBQ on Thursday, November
1st. More info on these later, but it is important to register now.
Let's show our support for the Shriners Hospitals and have fun as well.
Aloha from Ladies of Ila Neb Court #51,
We had 12 ladies accompanied by 2 Past Potentates attend the 104th Grand Council Session in Honolulu, Hawaii. The weather was beautiful and the ladies attended many meetings and fun ac-tivities.
Our Court will be dark during July and August, BUT we have a couple of activities happening that we would welcome any of our Nobles Ladies or friends. July 28 - BUNCO at the Ball Park - at Ben Ali Activities building and August 25 our Annual Hospital Lunch and Fashion Show. Our servers will be members of the Divan, Past Potentates and Nobles. If you are interested in either of the fun activities, contact Kathy Campbell at 916-689-4658 for details.
Have a Wonderful Summer!

Tommyknockers inhabited the gold mines, and Ghosts still inhabit our hotels. Come to the Potentate’s
visit to enjoy two historic foothill cities. Join us on Saturday, September 8 for a Potentate’s Visit with a
special tour in Grass Valley, and on Sunday for our annual parade in Nevada City.
First, the Tommyknockers Shrine Club will be hosting the traditional afternoon PV event, plus a noted his-
torian will lead a fascinating evening tour of Grass Valley locations, including the Holbrooke Hotel. The
next morning, we will all participate in the 52nd Annual Constitution Day Parade sponsored by Nevada City
Lodge # 13.
Accommodations are being made at the historic Holbrooke Hotel in Grass Valley (the National Hotel is
closed for remodeling). A special tour is being prepared for our overnight guests, perhaps introducing you
to intruders that are not Shriners...
Contact Tommyknockers Shrine Club Secretary, Al Schafer, for more information and lodging/tour reserva-
tions at [email protected] or (530) 271-0766.

Welcome to the 2018 Alcazar-Ben Ali annual Pitch & Putt golf tournament.
This year’s event will be played on the beautiful and sometimes challenging
Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course in Sacramento. We have a full day planned.
We start with great golf, followed by opportunity drawings, delicious food and fellowship.
Ben Ali Shriners of Northern California are proud to join the Shriners of Alcazar Temple #179 for this tournament as we together support philanthropy for the benefit of all the chil-dren in our community.
Shriners are a brotherhood of men committed to family, and dedicated to providing care for children and families in need. Ben Ali Shrine has supported the health care needs of chil-dren in the communities of Northern California since it was chartered in 1923. Its California jurisdiction covers from San Joaquin Country in the south to the Oregon border on the north.
Please join us for a day of golf while benefiting the children of our community.

Membership Referral Program
Commitment-Empowerment-Accountability
The three “R”s of membership development are recruitment – the successful creation of new members; retention – providing a program that keeps your current members active, engaged and involved; and restoration – restoring to active membership those members who have lost connection with the fraternity. These concepts are critical to the future success of our organizations.
As Shriners, we all have accountability to our fraternity. It becomes our responsibility to educate others about the Shrine, create more Shriners, recruit more Freemasons, and refer more patients to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Collaboration is essential, and we must all work together to promote successful and efficient membership processes.
Imperial has developed a new approach to membership development, changing the membership paradigm with the introduction of a new referral program with this new referral functionality, current Nobles can now directly refer names of friends, family members and acquaintances who they feel would make good Shriners.
Similar to beashrinernow.com, this new referral program is administered through WebFez and links the prospect with his referring noble, promoting natural mentorship based on pre-existing friendship or acquaintance. The program encourages constant collaboration, so that everyone can share their Shrine with the good men around them.
A recommended part of the new program is the encouragement to host fellowship parties and rush events. Fellow-ship parties should be in a relaxed environment and have an open table/social concept, with no formalized member-ship presentation. These parties should be open to prospective members, but with no pressure for membership re-cruitment or restoration; and membership literature should be available upon request.
Rush events have an open house, social and educational concept, and are open to prospective members and their families. A multifaceted presentation providing information on Shriners, Masonry and affiliated organizations is en-couraged at these events, including information about temple clubs and units. Membership literature should also be provided to all attendees.
To assure our contribution to the overall Imperial goal, Ben Ali has set our Temple goal at 55 new Noble creations for the 2017-2018 shrine year. To achieve this lofty goal will take all of us working together, spotting new members and inviting good non-fraternity men to join us. So let’s get to work!
THANKS FOR SUPPORTING OUR PROGRAM!
