Here we go: Aristocrat W. Averell Harriman, later to become Governor of New York, was, in the mid-1930s, President of the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1935, he was dissatisfied with the lack of UP’s passenger traffic to the U.S. west and commissioned a friend of his, Austrian Count Felix Schaffgotsch to find a place that would suffice as a major ski area UP would finance to be built and developed along the UP’s route from Chicago to Seattle. Other activities on the Hill are the turtle races where the win- ners receive $100 prizes, the human slalom, as well as the Poker Run. Many people unfamiliar with Winter Carnival ask “what the heck is a turtle race?” Inspired by Bob Kershaw 8 years ago, we basically have three races: First the Men’s race has 8 to 18 men starting on their backs at the top of a 50 foot incline. The object is to get down the hill first, using your legs and upper body, but staying on your back. The rules were loosened 3 years ago to allow people to use their elbows, result- ing in fewer disqualifications. After the women race, it’s time for the couple’s turtle races. The bottom contestant must remain on his or her back, and the other person must start and remain sub- stantially on top and never let go until after the finish line. Any contestant that wins an event the previous year is barred from competing to give others a chance to win the $100 Gift Certificate. The Lodge is built with massive timbers and its beauty is complemented by comfortable public areas including a generous sized hot tub and Pool. Other benefits include the slope-side location, as well as great food, and friendly, competent staff. Band will play Friday night, and after our dinner and short program Saturday night, we will tell stories and listen to music and watch the dancers strut their stuff to the music provided by a DJ. The bus surveys from the last two years had high marks for Giants Ridge, and voted to return for a 3rd year. The exceptional news is that Gary Heaser from the 3M club has agreed to run the trip with Chris Mickman this year. Mr. Mickman is retiring from the Winter Carnival after this year so we are open to new leadership and other ski destina- tions if you would like! There will be music for dancing by THE OB’S (Ornery Bastards); also valuable door prizes & gift certificates, complimentary hot and cold appetizers and a cash bar. All is included in admission for members at just $15 ($25 for non- members.) Lost Spur Golf & Event Center is located at 2750 Sibley Memorial Highway in Eagan. For directions call 651-454-2330. Sitzmark has a lot of activities planned this fall and winter, so come to the kickoff and hear and ask about them. The weekend after the party, we start the ski season by going to the Warren Miller movie. It is always a great way to get excited for the upcom- ing ski season. The next day we are actually going skiing! We are meeting at Buck Hill and will try out their new artificial snow surface. Ski Trip planned: IN december it is MSC’s Winter Carnival. Thanks to Yodelers President MikeHolland, the May 2016 MSC SpringFling party was a fun event.

Join us for our ski season kickoff,at the MSC Winter Carnival at GiantsRidge on December 9-11, 2016. TheOld Farmer’s Almanac is predict-ing a Minnesota winter that is cold-er than average, with precipitationthat is slightly above normal.Hopefully they are right on the pre-cipitation, and that it will only be inthe form of snow.

Contact me if you can help out inthe MSC Deaf and Hard of HearingLearn to Ski/Snowboard Program, which will begin again in December.

The changes to our website willtake place next month, in September. Ihave high expectations that it will be amodern and attractive site.

online, notification is emailed to ourmember club presidents and representa-tives, asking them to share the informa-tion with their club members.Unfortunately, some of the clubs arenot passing on this information, as evi-

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

After a looong gestation period, our NEW website is about to be born!!Go to mnski.org and take a look and letPrez Jerry know what you think of it.

Now that the Sportster is not auto-matically mailed to every MSC mem-ber, a little primer on the procedures inplace is appropriate:

First, if you are one of the peoplewho are missing your Sportster in themail, we will be printing a smallnumber of copies for local distri-bution, archives and subscriptions.A subscription form is located inthis issue for you to use for sign-ing up for a year/3 issues, or renewyour existing subscription.

When I create the file for anissue, I take the file to Korry, atNystrom Publishing to get proper PDFsmade, for printing and for the web.

When Korry has the web copyready, he sends it to me; and to Jerry forposting to our website. At that time, wesend the web PDF to the MSC emaillist for the club presidents and repre-sentatives, along with a notice that it isposted.

From that point, it is up to yourclub leaders to forward our emails tothe members of your club. We suggest

ALICE’S ALLEYthat a designated member create anemail list of all club members withemail, to accomplish communicating tothem that the Sportster is now availableto everyone with an email address andhas a smart phone and/or computer toview it.

The new website is designed to bevery easy to navigate and use. You willbe able to download the Sportster to

view it on your phone or comput-er. You will be able to see what’shappening throughout the wholeMSC and all of the clubs; alongwith our affiliates like theNational Ski Club Federation, ourvendors and our advertisers.

So, GO FOR IT!! Go tomnski.org or midwestfun.org.

Look it over and see what you can dowith it. And tell your friends withoutgood email or smart phone connectionsto get their subscriptions in so they canget their printed Sportster copies byfirst class mail.

Meanwhile, I am enjoying the bestpart of the camping season, Fall, andlooking forward to some winter camp-ing trips to warmer climes.

America’s first major ski resort to bedeveloped. Harriman trusted CountFelix’s judgment, and Sun Valley wasborn.

The “Valley” is warmed by hotsprings, owned and licensed by theBrandts, a family I got to know wellduring my five years on television innearby Idaho Falls. The full story is inmy book, but suffice it to say theBrandt family’s ownership of those hotsprings was an unpredicted occurrence,as was the case in the founding andestablishment of Sun Valley. The side-walks in the town of Ketchum were theworld’s first heated-snow and ice melt-ing sidewalks, thanks to all that hotwater.

In the 1970s and 1980s, I had thehonor to produce two documentariesabout “The Valley” and my nowdeceased friend, ski filmmaker DickBarrymore lived in Hailey, just downthe road, with his wife, Betsy Glenn, daughter of a St. Paul, MN, judge. Theworld is very small. I brought Dick toIran with me to shoot his own versionof a film about skiing in Iran, along

with my friends Suzy Chaffee and BillyKidd. Both our films can now be seenon the Internet. I was honored toreceive an Emmy nomination for thatvignette, in which Billy and Suzy syn-chronize-skied with the Shah’s wife,Empress Farah Diba Pahlavi. EmpressFarah was raised near Lausanne,Switzerland, thus know how to ski verywell. Her husband, the Shah, learned toski from the aforementioned, Sigi Engl, long before Sigi was my ski instructor, thanks to Mr. Linkletter.

When you ski at Sun Valley, knowyou’re skiing at one of the world’s mosthistoric and respected ski destinations. When you’re not skiing, one of themore historic sites to see is ErnestHemingway’s final resting place in thecemetery near the northeast edge ofKetchum’s town site. Safe and happytravels to one of my very favorite skivenues.

Oh my, it’s time for me to write mySportster article again, so....We’veenjoyed many fun summer activities!Ruth and Karen lead a hike throughSilverwood Park in St. Anthony. Weenjoyed the outdoor art along the trails, and the school art display in the visitorcenter after eating lunch.

An adventurous eight TWOs bikedfrom Welch to Red Wing and back onJune 7th. Hostess Lynn reports that “Itwas a gorgeous day! The trail was likebiking through a peaceful lushgreen colonnade.” The St. JamesHotel was again chosen forlunch, with all being able to sitand visit together at one table.

The Minneapolis Lakes bike ridewas a hit again this year with beautifulweather, a lovely ride around thesparkling lakes, and another fabuloussocial time and potluck on Kay andSandra’s deck.

Our high water worries aboutcanoeing the Namekagon River weretotally unnecessary! The water was alittle high, high enough to keep us fromhaving any trouble with underwaterrocks and trees, but not so high as tocause major problems with loading andlanding the canoes. The time spent atrestaurants and cabins was fun as well;we can always keep the conversationsgoing. Several of us had our bikesalong for a ride on Wednesday morn-ing, but the rain started as we arrived atthe trailhead....so back we went to ourhostess, Mary’s cabin for coffee andleftover desserts before heading back tocivilization!

Our August activities were anothercanoe outing, this time on the St. Croixhosted by Deirdre and Carol, and a poolparty and potluck in Marge’s backyard!Such fun!

A Segway tour along theMississippi riverfront is being planned(by me) for right after Labor Day. Laterin September, about 20 of us will headdown to Lanesboro for 3 days of bikingon the beautiful trails there. We lovestaying at Cedar Valley Resort in

Whalen right on the trail! Thankyou, Rose for hosting this trip!

October will be busy withGloria hosting a visit and lunch atthe Arboretum, our fall

luncheon on October 18th, andRegina’s famous Halloween Party!

Our winter trip this year is to ParkCity, Utah, February 4-11, 2017! I’vesent in my down payment and boughtmy Epic Local Pass! Contact SharonMisgen at 651-206-9898 for moreinformation!

MSC Winter Carnival is scheduledfor December 9-11 at Giants Ridge, more info on that later....

I’m guessing we’ll be heading outon our first TWO ski day on December6th, and then for lots more Tuesdays allwinter long!

To those of you who are notTWOs, we are a women’s ski club withactivities all year long. We love wel-coming new members and making newfriends! Check us out on the MSC web-site, www.tuesday-wipeouts.com.YAY!I LOVE TO SKI! (and hike, bike, canoe, etc)!

TRAVERSKINow that fall is fast approaching, it

is time to reflect on our club’s summeractivities and look towards the wintermonths. The area features 8 terrainparks, 14 bowls, 6 natural half pipes, one super pipe and a mini pipe. Terrainis 8% green, 47% blue and 45 % blackdiamond. Lifts open at 9am and close at7pm. Elevation tops out at 10,000 feet, with a vertical rise of 3,200 from thebase of 6,800 feet.

Besides alpine skiing, other activi-ties include horse-drawn sleigh rides, guided snowshoe and x-c ski tours, dogsledding and snowmobile tours. TheAlpine Coaster has an automated liftsystem that whisks toboggan-style carsto the top of a track, where the carsquickly descend 4,000 feet of curves, bends and loops…not for the faint-hearted!

To get the lowest lift ticket prices, order in advance online. “Day of” tick-ets may be purchased either at ticketwindows located at each of the resortbase areas. Here you can buy single ormulti-day lift tickets. I looked at theEpic pass website to familiarize myselfwith how the pass works if you ski atAfton Alps, for example and are takinga trip to Park City; I decided that Iwould need to have it explained by ahuman. According to the website, youcan get a saving “up to” 25%.

The historic charm of Park City isapparent on Main Street, with numer-ous Victorian buildings on the HistoricRegister. The street abounds withshops, restaurants and bars. For aprèsski, you can get there from the slopesby skiing down to the Town Lift.Check out PC Live concert venue orO.P. Rockwell and The Spur for livemusic. A word of warning: If you gobar hopping on Main Street, start at thetop rather than the bottom. After a fewcocktails, you’ll understand why.

Park City attracts 600,000 visitorsa year. In addition to PCSR, the cityhosts the annual Sundance FilmFestival. It is also the home of DeerValley Ski Resort, which opened in1981. A is smaller and more upscale, ski resort, it has a daily limit of 7500lift tickets; it was the first to offeramenities such as free valet service andparking lot shuttle service.

Opening day at Park City SkiResort for 2016-17 is November 23rd,and the season ends on April 16th(Easter Sunday). And then there’s sum-mer…a whole other topic.

Carol DeVore

For 150 years, the town of ParkCity, Utah prospered on silver mining. But as far back as the 1920s, minerswere into skiing, making use of theunderground trains and shafts to gainmountain access, and using an aerialtram built for ore-hauling as a chairlift.

In the 1950s, the price of silvertanked, putting a virtual end to miningand leaving Park City to become aghost town. The dying town was resus-citated when a group of out-of-workminers proposed a ski area on landsecured with mineral rights. With back-ing of the state legislature, 1963 sawthe opening of Treasure Mountain, laterrenamed Park City Ski Resort(PCSR).

A half hour’s drive from Salt LakeCity, on the eastern (back) side of theWasatch Mountains, Park City SkiResort is a popular ski destination and amajor employer for the town of ParkCity. HBCThe Hiawatha Bicycling Club is

well into its 17th year of riding togeth-er. We typically conduct about 10 to 12rides on a weekly basis. Some of theseare recurring, and others are scheduledon an ad hoc basis. We welcome non-members to check our schedule atwww.hiawathabike.org, and join us fora few rides. We are always happy to seenew faces.

HBC club members receive manybenefits. Each ride is led by a trainedride leader, and usuallyincludes a map of the ride.We have begun using thetool, “Ride with GPS”,which enables riders withsmart phones, and a RWGPS account,to load the ride map into their smartphones. Our club prides itself on pro-viding support to any riders experienc-ing mechanical or other issues during aride. Accident insurance is provided tomembers for all club rides. HBC spon-sors an annual meeting banquet as wellas annual volunteer banquet. Ride par-ticipation and mileage are tracked, andreflected on our web site. On the firstFriday of every month, a dinner andbirthday celebration is held at D’AmicoRestaurant in Edina.

We conducted our 17th annualTour D’Amico on July 4th. We partnerwith D’Amico and Sons Restaurant toput on this event. We had over 300 par-ticipants this year! The weather was

great and a good time was had by all. Alarge part of the proceeds from thisevent are donated to various bicyclingorganizations, such as the BicycleAlliance MN, Three Rivers ParkDistrict, and Midtown Greenway. Wealso make a contribution to the SpecialOlympics cycling teams. The TourD’Amico is a great way for us to shareour passion for bicycling, and to show-case our club.

HBC members have participated ina number of out of towncycling events. Thisincludes RAGBRAI, DoorCounty, Root River Trails, and San Juan Islands, to

name a few. In 2017, roughly twodozen HBC members will be travelingto Belgium for a combination riverbarge/bike trip.

Sitzmark has had a busy summer.End of June, 34 people experienced the“wilds” of Alaska. We saw caribou, grizzlies, and moose in Denali Park, hiked on a glacier, and kayaked aroundicebergs. Some even had to stop bikingand turn around in Anchorage becauseof a moose on the trail. Having it neverget dark outside was a new experience. You had to make yourself go tobed even though it was still lightout.

End of July, Sitzmark hadits annual “Uncamping” atLutsen. We always stay at the SeaVillas, 20 feet from Lake Superior. It’sgreat for bonfires on the rocks andspectacular sunrise kayaking. We areall set for July 2017. Come join us.

Now as the seasons are changing,Sitzmark is ready for fall. We have our
