Welcome to the sixth NZ Healthcare Congress hosted by the Medical Technology Association of NZ (MTANZ) and NZ Health IT (NZHIT). The Healthcare Congress is part of the HealthTech Week, which is run in collaboration with the Consortium for Medical Device Technologies (CMDT).

This year's programme features perennial issues and opportunities that our combined industries face; fostering innovation, securing market access and providing value to healthcare stakeholders. In particular, consumers of health services are requiring a more individualised approach to their care whilst at the same time the health system has to determine the longer term future of healthcare balanced with the ability to defi ne and fund the most appropriate models of care for the New Zealand population.

Hence, this year’s Congress theme of “Technology Enabled Healthcare” has been chosen to purposely focus all of us on technology-based solutions positioned as a key enabler to support the provision of health services; both now and into the future.

This is a timely topic as we’re all aware of the growing trend of collaborations and alliances being developed beyond traditional boundaries to form partnerships in the likes of pharma, biotech, genomics, software and data analytics. At the same time, disruptive and innovative technologies are entering the medtech space; apps and wearable smart technologies are offering new ways of meeting patient demands. Healthcare stakeholders are asking how we can unlock the full value of technologies to meet New Zealand’s healthcare needs.

All of the changes we are witnessing – be they technological, commercial or regulatory – demand that we approach solutions in a collaborative and constructive way. The New Zealand Healthcare Congress is an opportunity for you to become engaged, contribute to open panel discussions and be a part of forming the future direction of technology being used to enable healthcare delivery.

We look forward to your contribution at this year’s Congress. Your support, commitment and participation assists with the ongoing success of our industry associations.

We hope you enjoy the New Zealand Healthcare Congress 2016.

Associate Professor Scott WallaceDell School of Medicine, University of Texas at Austin, USA

Scott Wallace plays an infl uential part in the transformation of America’s health delivery. Leveraging his business and health policy background, he works in the U.S. and around the world with employers, health care providers, health plans, governments and others to develop new health benefi t and care models to improve health, stop the progression of chronic diseases and effectively treat patients’ medical conditions.

A Batten Fellow at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, Wallace is currently an associate professor and core part of the inaugural faculty at the University of Texas at Austin’s Dell Medical School, a pioneering, value-based medical school. He also served on the faculty for Harvard Business School’s executive education program on health care strategy, and most recently, was a Distinguished Fellow at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, where he helped to create its masters in health care delivery science program, an innovative new course for mid-career executives and clinicians from across the U.S. and more than 15 countries. In collaboration with Elizabeth Teisberg – a leading expert on value creation and its integral role in improving service delivery in health care – Wallace also teaches workshops on value-based health care delivery using a new case model they developed together, including the proprietary Experience Group research tool. The expert duo – also co-authors of a forthcoming book, “Capability, Comfort and Calm: Designing Health Care Services for Excellence and Empathy” –deliver custom content programs onsite, a signifi cant differentiator from typical executive education platforms.

Wallace’s work across the health care sector is wide-ranging and far-reaching. He is currently advising a leading hospital system in the U.S. mountain west to develop functional outcome measures of care. By using condition-specifi c outcome measures, the goals of patients and providers are more tightly aligned, with caregivers measured on aspects of their professional results rather than process compliance and hotel-like measures of patient satisfaction. Wallace also advised teams from 14 health care delivery organizations across northwestern Ontario, Canada to reorganize care delivery around patient needs. In a large midwestern U.S. hospital system, Wallace teamed with the senior leaders to teach and implement the use of the Experience Group research tool. Facilitators from the hospital system now work with medically-defi ned segments of patients to determine whether newly created care paths provide the services those patients need in order to attain their best health.

Prior to his University affi liations, Wallace was the fi rst president and CEO of the National Alliance for Health Information Technology, an organization committed to creating a safer, more effi cient and unifi ed health care system through IT. He is the co-founder of the Certifi cation Commission for Healthcare Information Technology, the leading health care IT certifi cation body, and was appointed by President George W. Bush to chair the Commission on Systemic Interoperability – a Federal Commission created to advise the White House and Congress on health transformation through IT. Prior to his commitment to health care, Wallace was CEO of a successful specialty chemical company that grew 10-fold during his tenure. He began his career working in corporate law and venture capital. Wallace speaks, publishes and consults internationally on health IT, policy, chronic care models, outcomes measurement, innovation and fi nancing issues in health care. He holds a juris doctorate from the University of Chicago Law School, a master’s degree with honors in business administration from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, and has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Duke University.

MTANZ/NZHIT AwardsGuest Speaker: Jake Bailey

Jake Bailey is an 18 year old ex-Christchurch Boys’ High School senior monitor. His prize-giving speech made worldwide headlines after going viral in November 2015.

A week before he was due to deliver this speech he fell ill and was diagnosed with Burkitts non-Hodgkinson lymphoma, the fastest growing cancer known to man, and was given three weeks to live if left untreated.

He persevered through this challenge to make his speech to his fellow students. The video clip of his speech went on to touch the hearts of millions across the globe. He was the “clear winner” of Massey University’s 2015 New Zealand Quote of the Year after receiving an unprecedented 77 per cent of the public vote.

Since being announced in remission in January, Jake has gone on to share with audiences his experiences, his courage and the things he has learned that have given him clarity throughout his journey, in the hopes of helping other young people facing diffi culties.
