C2X communication technology is on the threshold to market intro-duction. Its benefits for traffic safety, efficiency and for the environ-ment are considered to be high. However, only rough estimates about these benefits exist so far. They have not yet been proven under real life conditions yet. Only Field Operational Tests allow a detailed as-sessment of the impact of cooperative systems technology and can provide a solid basis for deployment decisions.

There are a number of national projects and initiatives that are set-ting up or do already run Field Operational Tests of C2X communication systems in Europe. It is the task of DRIVE C2X to bring together the various national activities in order to ensure European-wide interop-erability and to identify those C2X functions, which are most promis-ing from a European point of view.

simTD is one of seven national Field Operational Tests with cooperative systems technology that provide test data to DRIVE C2X. The data is used for system evaluation from a European point of view. simTD is the biggest Field Operational Test for vehicular communication in Europe and executes tests on a large public road network around the city of Frankfurt/Main, Germany.

With this event, DRIVE C2X kicks off a series of test site events through-out Europe. We welcome our guests to this day on the simTD system test site in Friedberg. The visitors have the possibility to experience the C2X communication system in a number of vehicles. The system has been developed by simTD for large scale testing under real life conditions. It consists of C2X in-vehicle and road side units and the necessary systems and components for test management and data logging.

Furthermore, in three workshop sessions, our guests have the possi-bility to compare the various approaches towards test and evaluation of cooperative systems. Together with experts from simTD and other European Field Operational Tests we discuss the impact of simTD on a European level.

The simTD coordinator, Christian Weiß, and I are looking forward to welcoming you at our test site event.

Best regards,

System architecture

DRIVE C2X’ biggest challenge is to create a common, European envi-ronment for cooperative systems. In order to achieve interopera bility, architecture is of key importance for incorporating the national test sites into the project. From a simTD perspective, the project expert dis-cusses the design decisions that were made and the reasoning behind those choices. The speaker depicts the lessons learnt: “What went well? What would we do differently today?”. Additionally, he gives answers to questions such as how to integrate and how to inter-operate with DRIVE C2X.

From both perspectives - the French test site and the European view - the DRIVE C2X experts are interviewed about the systems currently in place and how the development will progress towards the respective target systems.

FOT operations

The simTD expert presents the approach of designing and scheduling the German Field Operational Test. He goes into detail regarding the preparations and challenges for planning a national FOT.

In an interactive interview, the DRIVE C2X test site expert is asked about processes and tools facilitating FOT preparation and execu-tion. Additionally, he shares his experience with putting an FOT into operation with the workshop participants.

The integration of experiences with FOTs from national projects is put into a European, DRIVE C2X context. The speakers analyse the necessary steps for a federated Field Operational Test on a European level.

Evaluation methodology

The workshop on evaluation methodology revolves around approaches for the collection, assessment and utilisation of data. The simTD expert gives insight into the planned collection methods: “How will simTD deal with the large amount of data and how does the project address quality issues?”. He presents solutions created by interacting with FOT planners and system developers.

The central system test site of DRIVE C2X resides in Helmond, The  Netherlands. The experts are interviewed about the methods DRIVE C2X will use to collect and evaluate data.

To initiate discussions, the European perspective is put forward. The plans and results of DRIVE C2X are laid out: “What is the approach for experimental design? Which functions and use cases will be tested? How will technical evaluation and impact assessment be carried out?”.
