IPSF helps to ensure that every child, in every school, has the opportunities and resources to succeed and become their absolute best, benefitting them and the entire Irvine Community. We achieve this by providing financial support and enrichment programs for the students of the Irvine Unified School District.

Dear Friends,

In 2011, Irvine Public Schools Foundation (IPSF) marked 15 years of supporting the stu-dents of the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD). From the first few volunteers to the thou-sands who have supported the foundation over the years, one thing has remained the same—an unwavering commitment to provide a world-class education to the students of IUSD. We feel fortunate to live and work in a community that values our schools and our education so highly.

In our 2010-2011 fiscal year, your generous contributions allowed IPSF to donate more than $1.4 million directly to IUSD, paying for classroom support which includes instruc-tional assistants at our elementary schools and additional sections at our middle and high schools, among other programs. Additionally, IPSF provided more than $1.9 million in enrichment programs, such as Afterschool Classroom Enrichment (ACE) classes and the Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA), that enhance the education of our students.

We are deeply grateful for all that you have done to support Irvine students this year, and throughout our 15 year history. As you know, the challenges facing our schools are enor-mous. There has never been a greater need for our community to support our students and our schools. Together, we can continue to ensure our children’s success.

Sincerely,

NEDA ZAENGLE ROBERT BRAITHWAITEChief Executive Officer Chair, Board of Directors

A Message from the IUSD Superintendent

“We could not be more grateful for the support of the Irvine Public Schools Foundation, which works tirelessly to raise money for our schools while facilitating a number of innovative programs. Buoyed by the generosity of individual donors and corporate contributors, IPSF is the only organization with the reach and resources to impact every child in the Irvine Unified School District. In this era of dwindling state revenue, the foundation plays a critical role in our ongoing efforts to provide a world-class educa-tion for each of our 28,000 students.”

– Terry L. Walker, Superintendent of Schools

IPSF INSIDE THE CLASSROOMIPSF is proud to support each school in the Irvine Unified School District in their continued efforts to provide our students with a world-class education. IUSD has a well-earned reputation for excellence in education. All four comprehensive high schools have earned distinction as No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Schools and a total of 13 schools have been recognized as Blue Ribbon schools since 1983. Below are some of IPSF’s programs that touch IUSD students during the school day.

Classroom SupportBy providing IUSD with $1,000,000 in classroom support funding in the 2010-2011 school year, IPSF enabled school site principals to have great-er flexibility in managing classrooms with larger class sizes. Middle and high schools receive ad-ditional staffing hours, enabling schools to add sections of core curriculum classes and reduce class sizes across the board. Elementary schools receive additional hours of qualified instructional assistants who provide support to larger classes, allowing for small group learning in critical areas.

Elementary Music SupportIPSF provides funding to support instructional assis-tants in the Instrumental Music programs in grades 4-6. Instructional assistants provide support to the credentialed music teacher, allowing the instructor more time to focus on curriculum and musical tech-niques. In the 2011-2012 school year, IPSF is ex-panding our support of IUSD’s music program to include music instruction for grades K-3.

Innovative Teaching Award Program (ITAP) & Innovative Counseling Award Program (ICAP)

Through ITAP and ICAP, teachers and counselors in every school may apply annually for monetary awards to fund innovative approaches to teaching and counseling. Funds are generated through IPSF’s Parents Appreciating Teachers and Staff (PATS) pro-gram, which allows families to recognize individuals who have made an impact on their child’s educa-tion. During the 2010-2011 school year, 20 grants were awarded at a total of more than $32,000 for projects ranging from “Math for Disinterested Math Students” to the “Power of Poetry.”

“Without the support of the Irvine Public Schools Foundation the district may not have the highly acclaimed award winning schools that they do. By donating to IPSF, we know that our dollars are being evenly distributed to all the Irvine schools for the benefit of our children’s education.”

Nurses & Health ClerksA safe and healthy school environ-ment is critical to student success. Nurses and health clerks keep stu-dents healthy and ready to learn, assisting with everything from skinned knees to chronic medical conditions. Because of IPSF sup-port, caring, skilled professionals serve the health needs of students at each of the 33 schools in IUSD.

Instrument RentalEach year, IPSF rents over 1200 high-quality musical instruments at affordable prices to students in IUSD. The Instrument Rental pro-gram offers parents a less expensive alternative to purchasing a new in-strument that may only be used for a short time. Since 1990, IPSF has raised more than $1 million dollars to support IUSD’s music programs through Instrument Rental.

IPSF BEYOND THE CLASSROOMIPSF’s efforts to provide Irvine students with a world-class education are not limited to the hours in a typical school day. We offer numerous enrichment programs which serve to extend our students’ learning and give them opportunities to explore new challenges. While the majority of our programs are fee-based, we strive to keep costs low to allow maximum participa-tion and also offer need-based financial assistance. Below is a sample of the programs IPSF provides beyond the classroom.

“My son Mitchell has had the good fortune to attend several ACE classes, including cartooning and chess. These classes give him the confidence to try new things and me the peace of mind of knowing he is in a safe, supportive learning environment after school. The Honors Concert is outstanding. The students are so proud to perform, and show their friends and family their musical accomplishments. Thank you, IPSF ”

Annual Donald Bren Honors ConcertEach year, more than 700 of Irvine’s finest young mu-sicians in grades 5-12 participate in this memorable benefit concert and receive performance experience at a professional venue. Students are selected by au-dition and must demonstrate exceptional ability and commitment. More than 17,000 students have partici-pated in the Honors Concert, which celebrates its 30th anniversary on April 25, 2012 at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.

Afterschool Classroom Enrichment (ACE)IPSF’s ACE program is a high-quality, district-wide pro-gram that provides opportunities for elementary and mid-dle school students to enroll in enrichment classes taught on campus at the end of the school day. These fee-based enrichment classes are coordinated by volunteers at each of the school sites and taught by pre-approved professionals or IUSD teachers. Classes offered include art, chess, languages, sports, and technology as well as homework help, math, and science classes.

Program To Advance Cultural Education (PACE)This program provides experiential learning opportuni-ties for educators in IUSD to deepen their understanding of Irvine’s many cultures. Past programs have featured Korea, China, and Persia. Working in conjunction with local cultural organizations and Fullerton International Resources for Students and Teachers (FIRST) at CSU Ful-lerton, PACE offers educators from all IUSD schools the opportunity to attend a 3-day workshop including presen-tations and facilitated discussions on history and culture.

Oren Jacob was born February 26, 1971 and grew up in Irvine where he at-tended University Park Elementary School, Lakeside Middle School, and graduated from University High School in 1989. Oren’s interests growing up included the Apple 2 computer, video games, soccer, and skiing. After seeing Star Wars for the first time, Oren yearned to work on similar films.

In 1990, while a freshman at Berkeley, Oren saw an advertisement for a computer graphics internship at Pixar. He applied and received one of the four coveted spots. In 1993, Oren graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, followed by a master’s degree in the same discipline. During his time as an intern, Oren found his home at Pixar. His feature film work includes lighting and special ef-fects work for Toy Story, the amazing open-ing shot of A Bug’s Life, visual effects on Toy Story 2, and supervising technical direction on Finding Nemo. In addition to these suc-cesses, Oren served as Chief Technical Of-ficer and Director of the Studio Tools group during his 20 years at Pixar Studios. Oren also served as executive producer for the non-Pixar related documentaries Runners High and Ready, Set, Bag! which were pro-duced and directed by his wife, Justine (also a Uni Grad).

Oren lives in Piedmont, California with his talented wife Justine, whom he met in el-ementary school, and their children Toby, 7, Sammy, 5, and Ellie, 3.

Jason Lezak was born in 1976 and raised in Irvine. He attended El Camino Elementary School, Sierra Vista Middle School and graduated from Irvine High School in 1994. Jason began swimming with the Novaquatics program at the age of 5 and was an All American water polo and basketball player by the time he left Irvine High.

At the age of 23, Jason took the swim-ming world by surprise, when he won the 1998 U.S. Nationals in the 100-meter free-style. Jason won the Gold and Silver Med-al at the 2000 Olympic Games. In 2002, he dominated his opponents, becoming the #1 ranked sprinter in the world. In 2008, at 32, the oldest man on the U.S. swim team, Jason anchored the U.S. Men’s 400 meter freestyle relay team to a come-from-behind victory, stealing the Gold from the French. During those games, he also won a Bronze Medal in the 100-meter freestyle and dominated the last leg of the 4 x 100 meter men’s medley relay, winning the Gold for his USA team and securing Michael Phelps’ record setting 8th Gold Medal.

Jason is currently training for the pos-sibility of being on his fourth Olympic team in the 2012 Games in London. In his spare time, Jason is a motivational speaker, helping to instill character and values into others. Jason currently lives in Irvine with his wife Danielle and their two boys.

Allen Adham was born on Septem-ber 6, 1966 in Riverside, California. In 1978, Allen’s parents moved to Irvine where he attended Rancho San Joaquin Middle School and graduated from Uni-versity High School in 1984. In 1990, Allen graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Engineering and began working on com-puter games.

In 1991, Allen co-founded Blizzard Entertainment with Mike Morhaime and Frank Pearce. This small development stu-dio developed into a premier powerhouse publisher of computer games with a track record that includes more than ten #1 best-selling titles and numerous Game of the Year awards. Allen had a direct impact on the development of each of the com-pany’s blockbuster games. He worked as a producer, designer, and/or programmer on every game in the critically acclaimed Warcraft®, Diablo®, and StarCraft® se-ries, and served as lead designer for World of Warcraft®.

While the company’s success was duplicated in many markets, its products seemed to have special resonance with Ko-rean gamers. Staffers would avoid wearing Blizzard-branded clothing while on trips to the Asian nation for fear of being over-whelmed by fans. Following his successful tenure at Blizzard, Allen started his second career and currently serves as a founder and President of Tenfold Capital Manage-ment. Allen and his wife Nancy live in Ir-vine with their twins, Sammy and Jenna.

Community Groups & OrganizationsIPSF is proud to work with a variety of organi-zations which support our efforts to maintain the excellence of IUSD. Irvine Unified Council PTA has been a particularly significant part-ner in recent years. PTA support for IPSF ef-forts has been an immeasurable help, raising awareness of IPSF programs and initiatives in our community as well as contributing to our fundraising efforts. Additionally, the support of parent groups serving many diverse cul-tural groups in Irvine has also been invalu-able, helping to reach parents who are new to our community and unfamiliar with educa-tion funding. We thank all of our community partners for their support and look forward to continuing to grow our partnerships in the coming years.

Visionary Award:The City of Irvine

When Business Week recently published its list of America’s Best Cities, it came as no surprise that Ir-vine was near the top. Since master planning for our community began five decades ago, great care has been taken to ensure that our commu-nity provides a safe, enriching environment in which to live and raise a family. IPSF was proud to recog-nize the City of Irvine with the inaugural Visionary Award at its 2nd Annual Gala on October 22, 2011.

A Unique Vision Built on Education and SafetyIrvine's noteworthy, present-day status didn't evolve from happenstance. It is the result of careful planning and an ongoing commitment by our City’s leaders to remain faithful to that original vision The City’s success can be traced to 1959, when the University of Cali-fornia asked the Irvine Company for 1,000 acres for a new campus. Working together, the University and Irvine Company planners drew up master plans for a city of 50,000 people. When we look around Irvine today, we can see not only the results of those original plans, but also the dedication and stewardship of our city’s leaders, up to the present day.

Unparalleled Investment in EducationFrom innovative grade-school programs to world-class doctoral studies, education is a cornerstone of the Irvine community. The Irvine Unified School District is consis-tently recognized as one of the best school districts in the state. And the City of Irvine has been a major con-tributor to that success. In 2006, the City established the Irvine Educational Partnership Fund, a program that provides annual funding to support critical needs in Ir-vine public schools. In November 2011, Irvine voters approved Measure R, the “Irvine School Support Initia-tive,” by a 78.2% margin, continuing the City’s finan-cial pledge to Irvine schools by directing $1.5 million annually for the next three years. Altogether, the City now provides more than $5 million annually through direct and indirect support to Irvine schools.

The IPSF Endowment FundWhen IPSF was founded in 1996, few people thought we would still be needed in 5 years, much less 15. The goal was to come together to provide funding to fill some short-term gaps in the school budget until education funding had stabilized. Fifteen years later, we are still here and those funding gaps grow larger every year. While our community continues to support our schools on a year-to-year basis, the time has come for us to prepare for the long term—the next fifteen years, and the ones after that.

In 2011, IPSF established an Endowment Fund with an initial investment of $10,000. The goal of the IPSF Endowment Fund is to create a permanent, self-sustaining source of un-restricted income that will ensure the fiscal stability and educational excellence of our local schools. Endowment fund assets are given to IPSF with the condition that the principal be maintained in perpetuity and only the income generated will be distributed. Ultimately, our goal is for the Endowment Fund to reach $10 million, with interim goals of $1 million and $5 million.

Through the Endowment Fund, IPSF can accept individual donations, including gifts of secu-rities, property, life insurance and other estate planning contributions. Every contribution to the Endowment Fund is a lasting gift that will benefit our students and community for gen-erations. For more information about how you can leave a legacy and invest in the future, contact Kim Strohm, Director of Development, at (949) 265-6402.
