RECONNECT
As we move closer to our Reconnect Marriage Seminar
(Feb 7-8) I would like to write a few lines of encouragement re-
garding our marriage relationships.
Years ago I obtained a book by Dr Paul Faulkner, Making
Things Right When Things Go Wrong. This book is primarily based
on identifying and correcting marital problems, but the princi-
ples could also be applied to other areas of our lives.
There are several foundational and structural keys to any
relationship, without them, a relationship cannot survive. I have
always believed in the essential characteristics for a great mar-
riage: love, forgiveness, communication and honesty. Without
these it is difficult for a marriage to survive. But after almost 29
years of marriage, in my opinion, which is based on these 29
years, I have come to believe trust is the most essential quality
in the foundation of a marriage, in fact in all relationships.
When trust is gone, so is the relationship. It doesn’t matter how
much love there might be in a marriage, if there is no trust, it is
virtually impossible to move forward. Think of it this way. No one
is going to do business or continue to do business with a part-
ner or company they do not trust. The same is true about mar-
riage.
One of the most difficult obstacles to overcome is broken
trust. It’s a tough journey to rebuild trust, but not impossible. If
trust in your marriage relationship has been damaged, just re-
member, it is not over.
The wonderful hope we can have begins with the prom-
ises found in Scripture. Is it a painful process, YES! It is gut
wrenching at times. And to be honest with you, no one enjoys
going through the door of repentance and confession. But
God has made a way for us to Make Things Right When Things
Go Wrong. “He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but
whoever confessed and renounces them finds mercy,” (Pro.
28:23). James tells us, “Confess your sins to one another so that
you May be healed,” (5:16).
Confession is never easy! It’s not easy to confess, nor is it
easy to hear confessions (especially if you are the one who has
been hurt by broken trust). But the freedom you can experi-
ence when the chains of secrecy come off is far better than
being an untrustworthy person. Rebuilding may take years, and
there are always consequences. But TRUSTING in the promises
of God’s Word, and that He can renew and refresh what has
been broken, is one of the most important keys to moving for-
ward.
I am very excited about our upcoming seminar on mar-
riage. Prayers are already being prayed over every couple to
be blessed and strengthened by this event. I hope all couples
will attend.
