God is With UsI began this year with the vision of creating a community of tents on the High Holy Days. To create a welcoming
community like the tent of Abraham and Sarah, to create a community of great beauty and loveliness like the tents of Israel as seen by the prophet Bilam, and to create a community always grounded by our sense of holiness like the God’s tent of meeting at our core and center. In Hebrew the word for holiness, kadoseh, is best understood as closeness in time and space to God. A place, an object, or a person is kodesh or reaches out for holiness because they are or seek closeness, a union, with the divine. In our day and age when we have one Temple where our sacrifices can be offered in our praise and thanksgiving to God as an act of devotion, we are able to reach out for God wherever we are and whenever we need to. This is our greatest gift as a nation of priests and a holy nation, that wherever we are God is with us.
However, each one of us has two connections with God: a personal one and a communal one. Adonai is both the God of the people Israel and One who hears our individual prayers. This dual nature of our relationship with God is best understood in one of our most basic and fundamental prayers, the Avot v’Imahot, the prayer uttered in recognition of God’s covenant with our patriarchs and matriarchs. In it we praise God as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of Sarah, the God of Rebecca, the God of Rachel and the God of Leah. Our rabbis have asked why in the utterance of the prayer do we repeatedly have to say the God of, the God of, and the God of, aren’t we not praying to the same God? What are we really signifying by this repetition?
Our answer lies in God’s nature to each of us as individuals and as a community. We pray to the God of our fathers and mothers as recognition of continuity of the covenant established with them and through them and our place in that lineage. Moreover, we understand that just as God developed a unique and independent relationship with each of them as individuals, so too are we each in a unique and personal relationship with God.
In addition, as it says in the commentary of this payer in our prayer book, the Mishkan T’filah we each experience God differently. “In difficult moments of our lives we turn to God to help and sustain us.” The classical conclusion of the prayer evokes God as ‘Abraham’s shield.’ In our egalitarian version we evoke Genesis 21:1 where God takes note of Sarah as a Helper…As with the rest of the prayer (a Shield or a Helper) this teaches us that each of us experiences God differently.
It is my belief that this too has sustained us throughout our wanderings as a people. It would not have been enough for us to carry God with us a dispersed people and find holiness. It was also the gift of ever changing reality of our relationship with God and God’s presence that we each experience as time and space dictates that has sustained us. God’s uniqueness or oneness means that God is not bound by time and space, but, rather, beyond time and space. As we grow and move through our lives, God will travel with us.
Our only task is to invite God on our journey.

Who is Your God?

Speeding down 595 this morning, suddenly noticing a police car behind me, slamming on my brakes and murmuring under my breath “I’m going to get a ticket” only to see the police car pass me by, with a sense of tremendous relief, I shouted for joy “Thank you God”! With every fiber in my being this was a heartfelt prayer of thanksgiving!
Each of us experiences God in our own fashion, at different times in our lives, and for many different reasons. Our perception of and interaction with God is as numerous as the names our tradition ascribes to God. Adonai (master), Elohim (divinity), El Shadai (powerful), shechinah (presence), avinu (father) to name just a few.Essential to the building of a 21st century synagogue, is the effectuation of a personal and communal relationship with God.
Meaningful prayer services, inspiring education and social action projects are all potential avenues for bringing God into our lives. Whether you’re inviting someone to attend your family Seder, performing a selfless act of loving kindness, planting seeds with your children in our organic garden or reciting the mi sheberach for a loved one. Each of these are paths to building a relationship with the divine and may provide an instance of insight and understanding into a dimension that surpasses our human capacity for logic and comprehension.

Perhaps, Father Brian Kilkenney Finn from the movie ‘Keeping the Faith’ said it best “Faith is a feeling. Faith is a hunch, really. It’s a hunch that there is something bigger connecting it all...connecting us all together. And that feeling, that hunch, is God”.
Permit me to share with you three specific moments which have spiritually moved me.
---The first was my Confirmation blessing by my hometown family Rabbi. Individually, each of us in the class was called into the Chapel, while Dr. Berkowitz spoke to us alone and personally, and then offered the “birkat hacohanim” – the Priestly Blessing.
---The second instance was on Shabbat, June 1, 1973, when my name was called by the President - the “Rosh Yeshiva” (head of our Rabbinical school Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion - to receive his blessing, at that moment officially being declared “Rabbi.” ---The third instance was altogether different: I was simply sitting on a boulder at Point Lobos National Park, overlooking the Pacific Ocean near Carmel, California. The waves were crashing, the seals were barking, and there was a sense of the grandeur of creation.
At our Temple, I’ve had many spiritual moments. For one, I am always spiritually moved when, on Yom Kippur, with our Sanctuary filled to capacity, we together stand, saying and singing the Shema. In my life, as a child, husband and father, I have felt spiritually alive in so many and varied instances.
Each of us will define spirituality and spiritual moments in a different way. Those moments will occur at different times and different places, under different circumstances. They won’t be automatic and they won’t be regularly scheduled, but you’ll know them when you experience them. Cherish those moments.
Oh My God!When Rabbi Needleman asked me to write an article about God, my first reaction was: OMG…What will I write? What can I say? Then I remembered the song: “What if God was one of us?” that was written by Eric Bazilian and sung by Joan Osborne. It played in my head all day, I know this song is usually connected to Christianity but it makes me think about bringing people face to face with the realization that God is real. This song asks questions of faith and also about ourselves and how we treat our fellow man. This song comforts me in a sense that it makes me remember I am not alone in this world, and in our wonderful Temple family it is okay to ask questions and to search our souls.
We learn from the Torah that everything starts with God. He created our world, and gave us the Torah and for so many years we are here, praying for him in every service for his blessings and for his help. I believe that our community gives us the power to stay close together and each of us can feel close to God in our gatherings; everyone can find his own way to be closer to God and to get his strength to continue in our ordinary daily routines. One can feel close to God at Temple and others at work or home. Our community and our Jewish education are giving us the power to stay closer together and giving us spiritual fulfillment that helps us to be closer with our beliefs.

Tuesday, April 29 at 12pm, “A PAUSE IN THE HOLOCAUST”In the summer of 1943, thousands of Jewish refugees in Italian-occupied southern France enjoyed a rare respite from persecution, protected by an unusual force: the occupying Italian Army, who temporarily shielded local and foreign Jews despite pressure from the Germans and the French Vichy administration. In one Alpine village, Saint Martin Vesubie, life was, briefly, renewed as Jews attended synagogues, schools and cafes, and Yiddish was heard as often as French. With the invasion of Nazi troops in September the lull was broken and most of the Jews were deported. Veteran French filmmaker Andre Waksman, whose family survived the Holocaust in southern France, reconstructs this little known World War II history.

Tuesday, March 18th at 7pm Bob Feferman the Outreach Coordinator for the advocacy group United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) will be speaking at TKAE.
United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) is a not-for-profit, non-partisan, advocacy group that seeks to prevent Iran from fulfilling its ambition to obtain nuclear weapons. UANI was founded in 2008 by Ambassador Mark D. Wallace, the late Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, former CIA Director Jim Woolsey and Middle East expert Dennis Ross. UANI’s private sanctions campaigns and state and Federal legislative initiatives focus on ending the economic and financial support of the Iranian regime by corporations at a time when the international community is attempting to compel Iran to abandon its illegal nuclear weapons program, support for terrorism and gross human rights violations.

God and Spirituality

What is the most common word used in
discussions about religion today? You might think it is “God,” “prayer,” or “faith.” We hear those words a lot. This 8200 article topic made me do additional research to get it right. Here is what I learned.
Whether you’re of Christian, Muslim or Jewish beliefs, the most common word of all is “spirituality”. What does the word
“spirituality” actually mean? It is frequently used, and difficult to define. Even though there is no single, widely accepted definition of spirituality, social scientists have defined it as “the search for the sacred”. This may be the reason for the close correlation of our mystical branch of Judaism, called Kabbalah, with this mood of Jewish spirituality we are currently in.
The concept of spirituality comes more from Christian philosophy, which historically divides the world into the material and the spiritual. In Judaism we see only one world: material and spiritual at the same time. And in Judaism, the material is always potentially spiritual. The most ordinary, mundane thing has the potential to be spiritual: dirt, sweat, food, snow, or rain. This concept may seem crazy, but it can be true.
Why is the search for spirituality so important today? It is important because so many of us seem to have
lost the ability to pray to God. Some may say God is hiding from us, but more so is the idea that we are hiding from God. We’re better at investment strategies, golf, or skiing than at prayer. We’re better at computer games than at Jewish study. We’re better at travel than at Torah. Then we wake up one day and realize that something is missing. There needs to be a larger meaning to our lives. This is what spirituality is about. Finding that larger meaning to our own lives.
We tend to seek out meaning to our lives in times of trouble. Milestone events, especially tragedies, such as 9/11, push people to ask about larger meaning in their lives. Even lifecycle events such as marriages and deaths can cause us to search for meaning. So, what I can tell you I have learned is this.
Spirituality is:• Beyond all religions, yet containing all religions• Beyond all sciences, yet containing all sciences• Beyond all philosophies, yet containing all philosophies
In conclusion, we must be true to our own beliefs. Loving your Judaism and your God does not mean that you have to agree with all of their doctrines. We all do what we think is right. Use your spirituality to improve your life and by doing that, you will have a positive influence on those you love and others around you. Then, you will have found the larger meaning to your own life.

As children enter school, they are filled with a sense of wonder about their new environment, their friends, their teachers, their classroom and the world around them. Children take pleasure in exploring, learning and asking questions. Being in a Jewish Early Childhood Program, children are exposed to God every day. During morning circle time, the Shema is recited “Adonai is our God, Adonai is one”. Jewish holidays taught in school also discuss God. Not long ago, while sitting under the sukkah, a little girl in Pre-Kindergarten asked me what God looked like. Rabbi Needleman had just shaken the lulav “up and down and all around” and explained to the children that we do this because “God is everywhere”. As with all little children, this little girl’s natural curiosity is a question that leads to many teachable moments in a Jewish classroom.
As Jews, we have many images of God...warrior, protector, creator, redeemer. The list goes on and on. As educators, when answering questions about God, we must realize that God is not just a “who” but also a “where” and a “when”. Being in a Jewish environment, our children may think of God as a relationship or an experience. During Kabbalat Shabbat service every Friday morning, children may experience God in their own way as they light the Shabbat candles. Just recently during Judaics, Rabbi Needleman and Cantor Goldman led our students on a tour of the sanctuary. They spoke about the different ritual items that can be found there......the ark, the torah scrolls, the Ner Tamid, a menorah, as well as the beautiful stained glass windows. All items with meaning, and all bringing us closer to God. Young children pick up symbolic meanings of celebrations, symbols and rituals and begin to define their own identity of God.

It is hard to talk about God. In my heart of hearts I talk to God like a person. How might a relationship with God enrich our lives?
Many of us feel closer to God at Shabbat services or at funerals, others feel close to God at lifecycle events such as a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, a wedding, or a baby naming. Some have felt close to God while experiencing great art, literature, or film. Many of us feel close to God outdoors, when encountering “nature wonders”. You stand on the rim of the Grand Canyon, looking down into the vast, deep, magnificent chasm and you feel astonishment at the beauty of the immense gorge, and perhaps a sense of reverence for the mysterious source of this unfathomable universe.
I’ve come to believe that every human being has “Godly” experiences to one degree or another. We – humans, are given free taste of all the important spiritual traits as we pass through the avenues of our lives. Without these qualities we couldn’t have known what love is, or kindness, compassion, or generosity.
Jewish tradition underlines the importance of “Godly” experiences because they are the great teacher, helping us to understand the meaning of our lives with the steadfast conviction. These lessons are learned not through our mind, but through what our heart has come to know through experiences.
Talking with our teens on many occasions during class discussions I hear the statements: “God is hope”…”God is love”…”healing the sick is Godly”…feeding the hungry is Godly”…at these moments I feel assured that we, the educators, are providing the right guidance of learning, growing, and questioning the “God Issue” – which means we are on the right track.

Gabriela Carbone is a seventh grade student at Seminole Middle School. She loves participating in sports including softball and soccer. She also currently plays on her school’s basketball team. When not playing sports Gabby enjoys drama club and listening to music. For her Mitzvah project Gabby chose to donate her hair to Locks of Love. She has already donated her hair two times and plans to continue donating her hair in the future. Locks of Love is an organization that makes hairpieces for children that have lost their hair due to various medical conditions. The hair prosthetics help to restore the children’s self esteem and confidence. Gabby is looking forward to sharing her Bat Mitzvah with her family and friends.

When I was little, I was taught in religious school that God is everywhere. As I have gotten older, I have realized that for me I find God not in the places you would expect like a sanctuary, but instead in a Hotel Ballroom, on a basketball court or out in nature.
For me, I see God when I am at NFTY events watching hundreds of teens sing, dance and pray together. Some of them may not be sure what they believe about God or if they even believe in a higher power, but for a weekend they know there is something that brings them together. I have been lucky enough to attend many NFTY National conventions and it is an amazing experience to pray in a ballroom full of over 1,000 teens. At moments like that there is no question in my mind that there is a God.
It isn’t just events with thousands or even hundreds of participants where I feel God. Since I have been at Kol Ami Emanu-El I have had several of these moments. One that sticks out to me was our 5th, 6th grade Shabbat service out
on the basketball court. Heat fans may disagree but most people wouldn’t consider a basketball court to be a holy space. That night our students as well as the rest of the congregation turned our basketball court into a very holy place. I know I was not the only one who felt that God was with us as we celebrated Shabbat that night.
Spend a Shabbat at almost any Jewish camp and you will have the same feeling. Whether it’s sitting by the lake at Camp Coleman or up in the Rocky Mountains where I went to camp as a kid. Celebrating Shabbat at Camp or at a NFTY event truly brings me closer to God.

Joshua is the co-founder and CEO of Healthcare Underwriters Group, a medical malpractice insurance company based in Plantation. His wife, Laurie, is the evening news anchor on Local 10 News at 4, 5, 6 and 11pm. The couple recently moved their lives from Miami-Dade to Broward County to be closer to work and maximize family time with their identical 8-year-old twin boys, Luke and Jake. My Dear Friends and Fellow Congregants,
I hope that everyone enjoyed the holiday season and that 2014 is treating all of you well!
The theme of this issue of 8200 is God and Spirituality, and scholars that are way more learned than me have spent lifetimes discussing and studying this topic, as a way to understand our existence in this world. I will spare you the “lifetime” and keep my words brief. Our Temple has always been a place of worship where everyone has been free to believe in God in their own individual ways, and in doing so, explore their religious and spiritual being to whatever extent they so choose,
with no judgement or expectations.
This type of environment has been extremely conducive for our members to practice Judaism the way their hearts tell them too, and not because someone said that’s the way it should be. As we continue to grow and change as a Temple, there continues to be an emphasis on finding new and innovative ways to grow spiritually and to find a way to connect with God. Happy New Year to our Temple Family! So many wonderful events have taken place at our synagogue since our last 8200 went out to print. On Sunday, January 12th my husband Hal and I joined with our TKAE Community to plant our organic garden as part of the Tu BʼShevat celebration. What love and joy we experienced helping the children plant seeds and tomato plants.
This monthʼs theme of God and Spirituality reminds us that God is part of the little things. Helping an older congregant get to temple is just an example. We have been blessed with beautiful cool, crisp weather and sunny skies while our families and friends are freezing up north!
I had an amazing learning experience at the WRJ Biennial in San Diego where Sisterhood celebrated its 100th Anniversary. I attended conferences, services, and concerts so that I can now share with our congregation just a sprinkling of what transpires when 1500 Jews unite in prayer and study. Julie Silver, a famous songwriter and performer, added her voice to the many cantors and performers who attended.
One of her songs says it best. “Take God with you everywhere you go, in all that you do, take God with you."
