Green Seal Green Seal works with manufacturers at all levels to “green” the production and purchasing chain. We utilize a life-cycle approach, which means evaluating a product or service beginning with material extraction, continuing with manufacturing and use and ending with recycling and disposal. Products only become Green Seal certified after rigorous testing and evaluation, including on-site plant visits.

When a product becomes Green Seal certified, it means that the product has been tested according to science-based procedures, that it works as well or better than others in its class and that it has been evaluated without bias or conflict of interest. The Green “Seal of Approval” has come to stand for reliability, fairness and integrity.

The Green Seal provides a business advantage, for it identifies a product as environmentally preferable, provides third-party corroboration of environmental claims and distinguishes a product from competitors that can’t support their environmental assertions. The Green Seal may be used on packaging, in promotional material, in catalogs and in advertising for products that have been certified to meet the applicable standard.

Readily Biodegradable Surfactants The Readily Biodegradable Surfactants symbol reflects that the product has changed to incorporate biodegradable surfactants, replacing alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO’s).

Surfactants are used in a variety of applications including fabric cleaners, surface cleaners and other detergent formulations. The term “surfactant” means “surface active agent”. Many surfactants give rise to environmental concerns due to their poor biodegradability, their toxicity and their potential to act as endocrine disrupters.

Ozone FriendlyProducts with this symbol are considered to be be ozone friendly. They are created with substances that do not create gases that are harmful to the ozone layer.

High Efficiency Washer manufacturers recommend that only high-efficiency (HE) detergents be used in their front-load and high efficiency washers. HE detergents are concentrated laundry detergents that are low-sudsing and designed for use with low water high-efficiency washers. If regular detergents were to be used in front-loading and high-efficiency washers, the presence of excess suds could ‘confuse’ washing cycles, cause delays and make proper rinsing of clothes difficult. Using the proper HE detergent for your high-efficiency low water washer will enable your laundry appliance to perform as it should.

Safer ChoiceThe Safer Choice Program, formerly known as the Design for the Environment (DfE) Safer Product Labeling Program, was developed in 1997 and draws upon chemical and environmental expertise from across EPA. Safer Choice uses the technical tools and expertise of EPA’s New Chemicals Program to evaluate the environmental and human health impacts of every chemical ingredient in a product, allowing only the safest ingredients in labeled products. As a voluntary partnership program, Safer Choice brings all interested parties together to advance sustainability in chemical products.
