Changing young livesCreating future leaders

Page 4: Download Facet Auction Catalogue (PDF)

The FACET Foundation began in 2008 and we are incredibly proud of the life-changing work that has taken

place so far through the development of the Graff Leadership Centres in Lesotho and Botswana.

Now that the Centres are operational and making significant differences to the lives of young people in

these two places, we turn our attention to a project very close to home.

Our partner charity here is the Pebbles Project, an extremely worthwhile organisation with the goal of

enriching the lives of disadvantaged children, especially those whose lives are affected by alcohol. Our

goal is to raise enough funds to build a Graff Leadership Centre here in South Africa’s Winelands. It will be

a safe place where children can visit for education, play and social support.

I would like to thank the artists and galleries who very generously donated works of art and also Stephan

Welz of Strauss & Co. and his team for bringing his great skills to the evening; it is through this generosity

the we present this auction. I look forward to the positive results that this important fundraising activity

will bring.

“In Africa, we see the devastating impact of poor health on communities and the lack of the most basic

standards of education for disadvantaged children who have the right to life, survival and development.

Through FACET we are working with partners to develop programmes which will make a fundamental

difference to the lives of Africa’s children. We would like to give something back to the country which

gives us our remarkable diamonds. There is such appalling poverty and hunger, yet with more help from

donations the situation will begin to improve.” - Laurence Graff

Established in 2008 by Laurence Graff, The FACET Foundation makes grants to charitable projects in Sub-

Saharan Africa within the fields of education and training, health, the relief of poverty and community

development, focusing on charities which provide long-term, sustainable and comprehensive solutions for

those in need.

The Cape Winelands are one of the most beautiful locations in the world, yet beneath the surface lies

unemployment, illiteracy, malnutrition and alcohol abuse. It is reported that a staggering 12% of children

in the area suffer from Foetal Alcohol Syndrome.

FACET has partnered with the Pebbles Project with the joint goal of enriching the lives of children from

disadvantaged backgrounds with special educational needs, especially those whose lives are affected by

alcohol, through providing support and training to local wine farm and township crèches and establishing

after-school provision for older children living in the Winelands.

FACET’s first project will be to build a Graff Leadership Centre in the South African Winelands. This Centre

will provide an invaluable resource for many children, and will be made possible by the generous giving of

individual donors, and by the funds raised by the 2011 FACET auction.

A case of each: 6 bottles of Delaire Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2008 and 6 bottles of Delaire Sémillon/Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2009Estimate: R4,000Courtesy of Delaire Graff Estate

Delaire Graff Estate is pleased to donate two cases of award-winning Reserve wines to the FACET charity

auction.

Delaire Graff Estate was acquired by Laurence Graff in 2003, and has since been transformed into one

of the leading luxury destinations in the world. The award-winning Vineyards are overseen by talented

winemaker Morné Vrey, and showcase the best of South African wine varieties.

The Delaire Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine reflecting the true expression of the Estate’s terroir, has gained the

well deserved rating of 5 stars in the “2011 Platter’s Wine Guide” – the first Platter 5 star rating for Delaire;

only 58 five star ratings were given to the total wines entered from more than 800 producers. It was

produced with meticulous care and delivers rich concentrated berry fruits and soft integrated tannins and

a smooth textured finish on the palate.

The Delaire Sémillon/Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2009 is predominantly Sémillon, with underlying Sauvignon

Blanc characteristics, that create a rich, round texture on the palate that finish with lingering elegance. The

inspiration behind the wine reflects that the Vineyard is comprised of mainly Bordeaux grape varietals, and

thus a Bordeaux white has been created as the flagship wine.

Delaire Wines

Tasting Notes:

Delaire Cabernet Sauvignon

Reserve 2008

Cassis, dark fruit and spicy mocha

flavours dominate in a layered and

lingering delivery.

Delaire Sémillon/Sauvignon

Blanc Reserve 2009

Zesty citrus, lime and almond with

layers of pineapple, passion fruit

and gooseberries; a crisp, spicy

minerality adds to a long and

lingering finish.
