Through worship, education, and service, we continue the work of Jesus.

phone: 404-636-1418 fax: 404-636-4394

Dear friends in the Lord, For countless ages from the beginning of the world, men and women found their existence to be merely a toilsome journey from birth to death. Gradually, in many cultures and in frag-mentary ways, the human family caught glimpses of the God of creation and of the purpose of their lives. Then, in one startling moment of human history, Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of the Living God, revealed to his disciples that the journey was charged with beauty and meaning, a pilgrimage of sacrificial love to abundant life with his eternal Father. We in the Roman Catholic Church consider that we have been uniquely blessed as de-scendants of those first disciples—blessed with Sacred Scripture, the celebration of the Sac-raments, and a world-wide communion of more than a billion fellow pilgrims. If you are not a member of the Catholic Church but worship with us on a regular basis, I invite you to come and see how this ancient faith is lived in the lives of contemporary Cath-olics at Immaculate Heart of Mary. An Inquiry Class has been formed for adults who wish to know more about the Catholic faith. The meetings are informal; your questions will be the agenda. If you would like to learn more, please contact our Director of Faith Formation, Dr. Drew Denton, at 404-636-1418 ext 223 or [email protected]. If you are already an active member of another faith community, please know that we re-spect and value that commitment; it is not our intention to proselytize. If, however, you have no church family to call your own, we warmly invite you to inquire with us. Be certain that a warm welcome awaits you. Your brother in Christ’s word and work,

Thanks to everyone who made this weekend’s

Parish Picnic such a wonderful success:

the Picnic Committee, the Men’s Group

and all who prepared food, the many volunteers and all who came out

to celebrate our loving and vibrant parish community!

HAVE YOU REMEMBERED IHM IN YOUR WILL? A bequest to your parish will allow you to continue in death the Christian steward-ship you practice in life. The Catholic Foundation of North Georgia can assist you in remembering IHM in your Will. Those who make a bequest or a planned gift to IHM become members of the parish Legacy Society and the Archdiocesan Deo Gratias Society. For more information, contact Juliette Greco of the Catholic Foundation of North Georgia at [email protected] or 404-497-9440.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Abraham said to the rich man, “If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.”

— Luke 16:31

The dead rich man was afraid that his five brothers would not learn the lesson he had learned. Abraham replies that not even miracles will soften the heart of someone blinded by selfishness. The focus of stewards is always on Christ.

THANK YOU to the countless ministry leaders who made themselves available after each mass in last weekend’s Ministry Fair, and to Jonathan Hurtado, Katie O’Grady, James Martin and Gaby Perez, who shared with us the story of Chris-tian stewardship in their own lives!

CONGRATULATIONS to Louanne Bachner and Bob Reimer, who won the Min-istry Fair drawing and will enjoy dinner at the new rectory prepared by the pastor!

OUR ANNUAL STEWARDSHIP RENEWAL continues as Father Al speaks to us today and encourages us in our grateful response to God’s goodness to us.

COMMITMENT MATERIALS have been mailed to all registered parishioners from Monsignor Al. If you did not receive materials at home, please come by the parish office or visit www.ihmatlanta.org and register in the parish today. Extra commitment materials are available in the literature rack in the church narthex.

YOUR STEWARDSHIP COMMITMENT of Treasure will enable us to establish a realistic parish budget for next year; your commitment of Time & Talent will help strengthen our Christian witness here in the parish and a world away. Please make these commit-ments prayerfully and deliberately in the coming days. We thank you!

NEXT WEEKEND IS COMMITMENT SUNDAY, when we will prayerfully return our Time, Talent & Treasure commitments during the offertory of the Mass.

BEQUEST RECEIVED IHM gratefully acknowledges receipt of a generous bequest from the last will and testament of the late Carol Homrich. Carol, who died last March, served on the IHM parish staff for 33 years until her retirement in 2011 at age 81. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.

In our world today, handcraft production is the second largest form of employment be-hind agriculture. The fair trade mission is dedicated not only to paying artisans fair

wages and ensuring safe working conditions, but also to cre-ating opportunity for individuals, communities and environ-ments to thrive and grow. More than a business philosophy, fair trade is the development of relationships built on re-spect, honesty, freedom, and dignity. Shop the annual CRS Fair Trade Sale at IHM next Saturday and Sunday, October 5 and 6 after all the Masses. You will find meaningful and beautiful handcrafted gifts from around the world. www.serrv.org/crs

Catholicism—The Pivotal Players:

Flannery O’Connor, Part I

COMING UP IN ADULT FAITH FORMATION

Catholicism: The Pivotal Players – Flannery O’Connor Sunday mornings, 10:15-11:15 am September 29, October 6, October 20

The next installment of Bishop Robert Barron’s Catholicism: The Pivotal Players series is coming to IHM, and this time the subject is Georgia’s own Flannery O'Connor! O’Connor’s novels and short stories have been described as shocking, convoluted, funny, and violent, and they are filled with unforgettably strange char-acters. But they are also, from beginning to end, haunted by Christ, awakening us to sin and the need for salvation. Come learn more about this unlikely literary giant and Catholic hero from Milledgeville.

On October 27, as a follow-up to the Pivotal Players program, we will host a spe-cial presentation by Lorraine Murray, Georgia Bulletin columnist and author of The Abbess of Andalusia: Flannery O’Connor’s Spiritual Journey.

COMING UP AT EMORY’S AQUINAS CENTER Co-Responsibility in Church Management: New Culture of Leadership October 15, 7:30pm Candler School of Theology, Room 52 Kerry Alys Robinson will speak about concrete efforts of recovery and reform by Catholic leaders (ordained, religious and lay) from myriad sectors and industries in response to the twin crises of sexual abuse and leadership failures facing the Church. Predicated on exemplary stewardship of the Church’s often underutilized resources (the expertise of laity and the leadership and decision-making of wom-en), action is being taken toward a new culture of accountability, transparency and co-responsibility. With faith in the Church’s potential and our collective responsi-bility to call the Church to greater levels of integrity, Kerry will address the diffi-cult challenges facing the Church and invite a discussion on a hope-filled path for-ward.

Kerry Robinson is the Global Ambassador of Leadership Roundtable, and is a member of the Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities and FADICA (Foundations and Donors Interested in Catholic Activities).

CONFIRMATION & DECISION POINT Reminder: all second year Confirmation teens (typically 10th graders) meet this Sunday 9/22 for the first time! EDGE This evening our Edge group will be looking deeper into the 8th commandment and focusing on the topic of “Honesty”. The goal of this Edge Night is to teach the im-portance of being a truthful person and how the eighth com-mandment guides us to be truthful in what we do, what we say, and how we interact with others.

PARENTS Calling all LifeTeen and Edge parents! We could greatly use your help to feed our teens this year. Each Sunday we’d like

to provide the middle and high schoolers with a light dinner or a heavy snack. We’d like to ask each parent to sign up to help on one evening. Please use this link (which can be found on the Youth Ministry webpage) to choose your date: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/409044caaa62eaafb6-youth Thank you!

We’d love people who can reliably help provide a meal, even just one in the whole year is won-derful! Called to more?
