The Newsletter of the Pioneer Gun Club

Kansas City / Bates City, MO December 2018 Volume 21, Issue 12

I hope this finds everyone well. We've had a challenging past few weeks. From the added baffling (that passed) to John Downs new house burning down at McBride, I'm ready for the new month. If that wasn't enough my household has been without the internet for the last 4 days. If any of you have younger kids like I do, I’m sure you can understand. Everyone is fine in the Downs family and if they need anything, we'll do whatever we can to help them out. On the baffling front, we were all disappointed in the changes but we're glad that it was dis-covered early. When things are being conveyed back and forth sometimes it isn't always where it’s supposed to be. We'll make a few changes on our end so it doesn't happen again. We don't have a lot going on to really report about. The furnace at Brickyard should be re-placed soon and we're looking at adding additional heaters to pull us through until we have a better solution. That's been easier said than done. Brickyard has been power washed and I'd like to get in there and get it painted soon. We'll see how that goes.

If you're getting the opportunity to enjoy Brickyard, make sure and clean up after your-selves. That shop vac doesn't run itself.

I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year... see ya on the range! Ty

Our condolences to the families of Pioneer Members BG Dick and Richard Muir.

Our January Board of Directors meeting falls on a Holiday so we’ll be moving it to the 8th.

PIONEER GUN CLUB – DECEMBER 2018

It was an eerie night down at the Brickyard Hollow befitting Halloween except it was the last day of November. The fog was so thick you needed a knife. The light mist & cold temps to boot were enough to give anyone goose-bumps. Nonetheless, we had many brave souls venture past the dense forest to try to beat the Dastardly Director.

The participants posted their targets. Poised at the line with rifles raised, they were ready to send the Smallbore Syndicate packing. Did anyone do it? Why, yes, of course! It was the fearless Captain Ken K. who managed to do so with a 497-22x & a small injury to his right hand prior to the match starting. Get well for next time! Lurking in the shadows was the stealth Tim O. who nabbed his chance to take out the evildoers with a 481-4x. The strike force trio was rounded out by Frank H. His skills and steady stance scored a 476-17x

against those challenging scamps. Commendations to them!

Wait. What's this? Some of the scoundrels had been missed? Impossible. No fear. We knew who could snag these barnyard brutes. It was the pistol packers. Each one was at a station & ready for the task. The battle com-menced & was over in a blink. In the end it was a reversal of the rifle brigade. Commanding the top post & send-ing the runaways back to their cages was Tim O. with a 496-25x. Second in line & showing his skills are on par with the leader was Ken K. with his admirable 490-22x. Those scallywags never stood a chance with the last pistol packer, Frank H., who slammed the doors on their cages with a 480-12x. Cheers to you!

The mayor doled out awards and thanked all the brave Brickyard community members for rounding up these ras-cals. Was this the last we'd hear from the Smallbore Syndicate? My instincts tell me it isn't. Would they be se-cretly plotting a return from behind their iron fences? Guess you'll have to wait and see. Until then, this is your roving reporter Laela LaVender saying see you next time for Appleseed

PIONEER GUN CLUB – DECEMBER 2018

BG was born September 15, 1942 in Kansas City, MO to Ben and Mildred (Allen) Dick. He married Joyce Fowler, October 31, 1962

He passed on to be with the Lord at the age of 76 on October 8, 2018 at home in Kingsville, MO with his loving family.

BG was an individualist, he was talented, loved life and had many interests and hobbies. He loved teaching his children

to do everything that he loved and enjoyed. He would take them canoeing, target shooting, fishing and he enjoyed coach-ing sports. Fishing was a favorite for him and the family. That “first fish” was especially fun for him, as he introduced

the sport to his children and grandchildren.

BG belonged to Fort Osage Muzzle Loading and Pioneer Gun Club. He participated in many functions with Fort Osage Muzzle Loading Club such as Mountain Man Rendezvous, competition shooting and numerous Mountain Man re-

enactment’s at various functions and parades. He said he was born at the wrong time that he should have lived his life as ale Mountain Man.

His children, Cheri and George, were brought up participating in these events and competitions with their dad. Each year their trip to Friendship, Indiana to the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association Competition also called for the yearly

stop at Indianapolis 500.

After his retirement from the Kansas City School District, as a carpenter, he enjoyed being a volunteer at the Kansas City Zoo. He would meet his friends for lunch every day and loved watching baseball and football. The love of his life was to be present for his grandchildren’s activities; sprint car racing, swimming, football, basketball, dancing, cheerleading, trap shooting or whatever each child chose to do. He would be there. BG was a Mason, Shriner and “Pockets” the clown. As Pockets the clown, he performed for 25 years at the Shrine Circus, visiting children’s hospitals, parades and many other volunteer events. He competed at the Central States Shrine Clown Association winning multiple events including Make-up and One Man Skit. His last years were in Kingsville, MO where he enjoyed setting up his workshop, riding the ATV & the UTV and sitting on the front porch watching the beautiful sunset come up each morning and enjoying watching

the grandchildren play, while smoking his cigars and drinking coffee. He would have a smile on his face when a neigh-bor drove by and waved.

He thanked God each and every day for his blessings.

He is survived by his daughter Cheryl and her husband Michael Hoenshell, Greenwood, MO, son George and his wife Tazhan, Kingsville, MO. Five Grandchildren, Christi Alumbaugh (Hoenshell) and her husband Austin Alumbaugh, Jes-

sica Dick, Ben Dick,Nevaeh Dick, Isaiah

PIONEER GUN CLUB – DECEMBER 2018

Bullseye Indoor League By Bill Kloeckner We welcome visitors to the indoor bullseye league at the Brickyard range. We meet Monday nights at 6 p.m. and alternate between rimfire at 50 feet and centerfire at 25 yards. We usually finish the 90-round course by 7:30 p.m. Call Bill at 816-373-7567 for more information. Frank Harles shot this group during the timed fires portion of the National Match Course on November 5th – 100 with seven X’s. This was on a CF day so we were shooting at 75 feet but you can tell it’s a 22. You can shoot what you have at league. A new shooter joined us this month; he was practicing when we start-ed showing up. He was not prepared for the course but ran out of excuses when one of the regulars lent him a pistol and ammo. Come join the fun!

WIN $600 AND SPEND IT ON ANY THING THAT IS GUN RELATED AT CR SALES IN INDEPENDENCE, MO.

This is not just a gun giveaway! You can get what you want! This could be a new or used pistol or ri-fle. The $600 could be spent on reloading equipment. You could spend it all on bullets, powder, or pri-mers. I’m sure you have the idea. We had a Membership Drive several years ago and it was very successful, and we are going to do it again. For every individual that you sponsor to join Pioneer Gun Club that becomes a member your name will be put in for a drawing. If you send me five people you will have five chances to win, etc. The member-ship drive starts on July 1st. 2018 through June of 2019. If you as a club member have any questions, feel free to e-mail or call (please leave your name and num-ber if I am not available. You can give a potential club member my info which is below.

PIONEER GUN CLUB – DECEMBER 2018

Action Pistol Wednesday shooting schedule for December, 2018:

December Wednesday practice sessions – Brickyard, 5 p.m. – Dec 5 and 19.

The December 19 match will also be our division Christmas party – all food provided so come hungry. Bring a guest, your spouse, and anyone who wants to shoot. Everyone is welcome.

Be sure to RSVP at [email protected] so we can be sure to have enough food.

The fun starts around 5:30 pm. This will be a ‘fun shoot’ using the new Short Course for Action Pistol – one time thru with rimfire, then once with centerfire. If you don’t have a rimfire or centerfire gun we will have spares to use – just bring your ammo.

For the indoor matches at Brickyard, we shoot a modified Action Pistol course – no movers and only out to 25 yards. These sessions are lots of fun and open to everyone. They are a great informal way to find out about Action Pistol. New shooters are always welcome.

The December monthly match is scheduled for Sunday, December 2 – 8 a.m. at McBride – assuming we have shoot-able weather. Since the Falling Plate range is closed for destruction, we will shoot a shortened Action Pistol match. If this match cannot be held due to weather, we will shoot at Brickyard. An email will be sent on Saturday to confirm the location.

All the rest of the winter monthly matches will be held on the third Saturday of the month at Brickyard, starting on January 19, 2019.

Please be aware of ALL range rules….. There seems to be some confusion on what is allowed at our Brickyard location and on our ranges containing steel targets (ranges 8 & 6). Outside of 22 rifles or pellet guns, these ranges are pistol only ranges with a power factor of 450ftlbs or less. Carbines of ANY caliber are not allowed on these ranges. If you are not 100% certain what is allowed on any of our ranges please reach out to a board member or refer to our By-Laws. Our By-Laws are available on our website and may be downloaded anytime with a simple click. Please know that ignorance is not an excuse!
