Brief Description

1) The term “dove” usually denotes a smaller bird.

2) There are no breeds of doves, only species. There are close to 300 species of doves.

3) These birds come in a vast array of sizes.

4) Life-spans are short 3 to 5 years. In captivity doves can live to be 12 to 15 years old.

5) The plumage of the family is variable.

6) The wings are large and have low wing loadings.

7) They are also highly maneuverable in flight.

8) Like some other birds, Columbidae have no gall bladders.

9) However, they do have bile, which is secreted directly into the gut.
