SETTING: Irregular sized east sloping lot. Extended walkway and stairs leading from the street to the front west entry. The househas a view of Gardiner and the Umpqua River.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS IF NECESSARY): “Alfred William Reed was born in 1846 in NewBrunswick, Canada. His parents, William and Mary Nicholson Reed brought the family to Gardiner in 1870, from Maine. Alfred Reedmarried Susan Slocum in 1872. Susan died the following year. In 1880, Alfred married Eva Downing of San Francisco, a former residentof Scottsburg.”(Young)

“Reed purchased from J.B. and Eliza Leeds all of the remaining property of the Gibbs Donation Land Claim that was still unsold on May19, 1887. The Reed home was possibly constructed after this land transaction. Reed was a major land holder on the lower Umpquaand served as representative in the Oregon Legislature during 1891 and Senator in 1896.” (Young)

A nephew, Warren Payson Reed, named the town of Reedsport for Alfred Reed at the time Warren platted the town.
