India fled her home in Indonesia at the age of 9 in 2007, to settle in the UK for a better life. Unfortunately the artist had a tough upbringing before moving to the UK, it was during this difficult time for India and her family that she found her passion for music. “Indias peaceful and beautiful singing voice was what made living in the slums back home doable”, her mother reported to ‘VIBE’ magazine last week.

During her interview with ‘VIBE’ magazine last week India shocked her fans with the horrific living conditions her and her family had endured for over 9 years before her family finally received the right to enter the UK. India incorporates the difficult feelings she felt during her childhood throughout the lyrics of her songs.

Since the age of 10 the singer has been busking on the streets of London in an attempt to pay her unemployed families rent. After being filmed and uploaded onto several social media sites for her unique and different versions of original R&B classics and her catchy own written songs, India built an online name for herself, which rapidly grew just like the crowds stopping to watch her sing outside Covent Garden tube station.

The singer was offered her first official singing contract in 2013, which led to be a huge let down for both India and her family as the dealers bailed out last minute! India reported she was ‘absolutely heart broken’ when she found out.

However, Indias dreams were finally made true in January 2016, after another record deal went through successfully, with her song ‘Rush’ hitting number one for four consecutive weeks and leading India to be nominated for four music awards, including a VMA! The artist referred to the experience as being a “blessing from God”.

The new artist has managed to stay massively humble despite the amount of recent fame she has received. Since the very beginning of her journey of fame, she has been donating huge amounts of money back to her home country and charities. India has reported “no matter what happens regarding my music career, I will always keep God close to my heart”. R&B music has always had a history for putting great importance on Religion and India bringing back the old traditional concepts within R&B is contributing towards her fame.

Details of the latest line-up for the annual festival, V Festival, held in Essex, England, were announced on Tuesday, India will be one of the three headliner acts at V Festival this year, which will be held in mid-August. Although V Festival has had big modern R&B stars before, including Rihanna last summer and Beyonce in 2016, this is arguably the first time a new upcoming R&B artist has taken the place as a headliner at V Festival. India has recently commented to Capital FM that she “absolutely cannot wait to perform at a festival, I know it will be an experience I will never forget!”
